for saxophone and cumulative tape-delay system (and performed here by David Mott)
info from liner notes of CRI SD 528:
"The score of Saxony specifies a temporal sequence of 'available pitches' to be used by the player as the basis for improvisation. This improvisation may be quite free rhythmically, expressively, even stylistically, but it is completely controlled, harmonically, by the fact that pitches given are those of the first 32 harmonic partials of a low Eb. A cumulative tape-delay system is used to create both a rich vertical sonority and a complex polyphonic texture via canonic replications of the player's melodic improvisation. The piece was commissioned by the Ontario Arts Council and first performed by Don MacMillan in 1978." - James Tenney

Travel video about destination Dresden.
Dresden is the capital of the German Free State of Saxony and a major centre of culture with a remarkable history. Although almost completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War and for many years hidden behind the Iron Curtain, today the city shines out in all of its former splendour. As a centre of art and science, Dresden Castle contains a number of collections that are well known throughout the world and draw international visitors to this most ambitiously-conceived and successful project. Close by, the stable courtyard is the world's oldest original Tournament Arena of its kind. The Tuscan-arched arcades originated in the Renaissance period and were used by spectators during various tournaments and entertainments. Count Brühl, a follower of Friedrich August The Second, was presented with the Elb Wall as a gift and had a mile-long walkway built for the nobility. It is known as The Balcony of Europe and is located ten metres above the banks of the River Elbe. Meissen is well known for the porcelain of the same name. In the Meissen factory each aspect of the manufacturing process can be observed, along with a presentation of the history of the famous porcelain. The centuries created such beauty that Dresden has been described as The Venice Of The East and Florence On The Elb. Today, the city is a harmony of both architecture and landscape, a brilliant work of art!

The cities were really picturesque but it wasn't till I explored outside of the towns that I was truly blown away by Saxony's beauty. Impossibly green, rolling hills, wildflower fields and lazy rivers—I can see why Saxony is popular for it's hiking, biking and outdoor pursuits. The Bastei Rocks was a particular highlight.

Photographic travel guide across the Art and Architecture highlights of the city of Dresden (Germany / Deutschland).
Music from the composer Roger Subirana.
Dresden is the capital city of the Free State of Saxony (Sachsen) in Germany. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near the Czech border. The Dresden conurbation is part of the Saxon Triangle metropolitan area with 2.4 million inhabitants.
Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city center. A controversial Allied aerial bombing towards the end of World War II killed 25,000 civilians and destroyed the entire city center. The impact of the bombing and 40 years of urban development during the East German communist era have considerably changed the face of the city. Some restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semper Oper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche.
Since German reunification in 1990, Dresden has regained importance as one of the cultural, educational, political and economic centers of Germany and Europe. The Dresden University of Technology is one of the 10 largest universities in Germany and part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative.
The video consists of a slideshow of pictures taken during a visit to the historic inner city and includes several interesting buildings, streets and monuments:
- Hauptbahnhof (Main railway station).
- Wiener Platz.
- Praguer Strasse.
- Kulturpalast.
- Johanneum.

Located in the German state of Saxony, the city of Leipzig has almost half a million inhabitants and a multifaceted past and present. Renowned composers Felix Mendelssohn and Johann Sebastian Bach both left their influence on a city also known for the visual arts. Leipzig-born painter Neo Rauch counts as one of contemporary art's most successful figures. One of Leipzig's newest attractions is Gondwanaland in Leipzig Zoo. Named after the prehistoric supercontinent Gondwana, it takes visitors on a journey through natural history in Europe's biggest tropical biosphere. Rare animals dwell among numerous tree and plant species in an enclosed area bigger than two soccer pitches. They include Germany's only Komodo dragon, the world's largest type of lizard. Frothy German beer, festive brass bands and dachsund races — what's not to love about Oktoberfest? California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours the Old World Oktoberfest in this episode of "California Travel Tips."
The history of Oktoberfest dates back to 1810 in Munich, Bavaria, when King Ludwig the First married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Today the Munich Oktoberfest draws more than 6 million people a year.
Old World Huntington Beach offers an authentic German Oktoberfest in California.
This charming village, built in 1978, mimics a real Bavarian town with cobblestone streets, beautiful murals, European markets, and plenty of authentic German food. You can even go downstairs into a German-style Rathskeller and enjoy real German beers such as Spaten, Bitburger or Warsteiner.
Though its open year round, Old World really comes alive during Oktoberfest, held annually in September and October.
You cant help but get caught up in the fun as party goers dance to Oktoberfest music and Oktoberfest girls pass out delightful liqueurs from the Old Country.
My favorite part? The dachsund races, featuring the fastest wiener dogs in the Southland, and the old-fashioned contortionist show featuring two 70-year-old sisters straight from Germany.
Following the show, stroll through the village where you can shop for handmade garden gnomes, try on some Oktoberfest costumes or shop at an authentic German market.
At Old World German Restaurant & Bakery, you can fuel up on Oktoberfest food like German potato salad, sauerkraut and bratwurst served with their soft German Farmers Rye.
Just dont leave without trying one of their delicious Berliners, a soft and chewy donut stuffed with cherry filling. Theyre absolutely incredible!

Travel video about destination Wachau in Austria.
Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria.
The sole 'Gateway Into the Wachau' is a unique region of the Danube between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of 113 houses encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on the banks of the Danube. Today, the town's facades and entrance-ways are decorated in traditional style and compliment the impressive Renaissance splendor of the buildings.
A little further on, and the river valley narrows and becomes even more beautiful. The blue-white church tower of Durnstein proudly welcomes those who visit the town. It is a landmark of the Wachau. This small medieval town nestles picturesquely along the rock walls above the Danube and it lives and breathes the history that made it world famous.
The beauty of the landscape is overwhelming. Color dominates the soft hollows between the rocky slopes that flank the Danube Valley and the shining green of the summer months leads to a spectacle of color that leads up to the wine harvest, a true spectacle of nature!
Thirty-six kilometres off the Danube Valley with magnificent cities, castles and historic ruins, lies a Baroque monastery and an old vine-growing culture. The Wachau is a priceless gem that is situated alongside the far-stretching waters of the Danube.
