This video will show you how to record your Skype calls and gameplay footage using only software - no splicing of wires! This method is primarily for if you are gaming/recording on the same
PC.

UPDATE:
Apparently Elgato has incorporated a way to do this into the latest beta versions of their capture software. https://www.elgato.com/en/introducing-elgato-sound-capture-windows

In this video I show you how to record your Skype conversations and gameplay audio/video footage simultaneously using the free VoiceMeeter
Banana software. With this setup you can record your gameplay footage/audio as well as your Skype conversations with your friends.
If you just want to see the Skype, VoiceMeeter Banana and Elgato settings that I use, go ahead and skip to the 21:01 mark. Be sure to set VoiceMeeter Banana
Output as your default playback device in
Windows sounds. If you want to understand how and why this all actually works, please watch the entire video!
This method works great if you are playing an online game with one or more friends communicating through Skype and you want to be able to record your group commentary to go along with the gameplay footage/audio. This method will result in a gameplay video track, a gameplay audio track and then a separate commentary audio track of your Skype conversation with your friends. You can then mix the three tracks together in the post production software of your choosing such as
Adobe Premiere,
Adobe Final Cut or
Sony Vegas.
IF YOU ARE GETTING AN
ECHO (
VOICE OR
GAME AUDIO)
If you are getting echos, please make sure that your
Audio and
Video previews within the Elgato capture software are completely disabled. This is probably where the echo is coming from and in general you will get better PC performance while using Elgato if these options are both disabled.
CONSOLE GAMERS PLEASE READ:
I have had a large number of questions about recording off a console. This method is primarily for recording/gaming on the same PC.
Unfortunately Elgato isn't going to show up as a hardware output in VM Banana if you're recording off a console. The reason it shows up as a hardware output in the scenario on my video is because my PC has an
HDMI output which I am in turn "looping" through the Elgato's HDMI pass through to an
HDTV. I do sincerely apologize. As a workaround you could still record Skype conversations in a separate commentary track from your gameplay footage, but the drawback is you wouldn't be able to hear your gaming audio through your headphones as you play (it would be in the exported recording files after you export your footage from Elgato though). You would basically just have to turn the TV audio at a volume that is loud enough for you to hear but not so loud as to get picked up by your microphone.
