Bartleby, the Scrivener
"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" (1853) is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville, first serialized anonymously in two parts in the November and December editions of Putnam's Magazine, and reprinted with minor textual alterations in his The Piazza Tales in 1856. Numerous essays are published on what according to scholar Robert Milder "is unquestionably the masterpiece of the short fiction" in the Melville canon.
Plot
The narrator, an elderly, unnamed Manhattan lawyer with a comfortable business, relates the story of the strangest man he has known: Bartleby. At the start of his story the lawyer already employs two scriveners to copy legal documents by hand: Nippers and Turkey. An increase in business leads him to advertise for a third, and he hires the forlorn-looking Bartleby in the hope that his calmness will soothe the irascible temperaments of the other two.
At first, Bartleby produces a large volume of high-quality work. But one day, when asked to help proofread a document, Bartleby answers with what soon becomes his perpetual response to every request—"I would prefer not to." To the dismay of the lawyer and to the irritation of the other employees, Bartleby performs fewer and fewer tasks, and eventually none. The narrator makes several futile attempts to reason with him and to learn something about him; and when he stops by the office unexpectedly, he discovers that Bartleby has started living there.

Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby the Scrivener" details the passive resistance of a young legal clerk through the eyes of his boss, an older lawyer.
The elder man makes his living copying legal documents in his Wall Street office and hires young Bartleby to assist. Bartleby, however, soon becomes intransigent, calmly but resolutely refusing to do the work for which he is paid.
He simply stops accepting assignments, and remains motionless in the office, even after hours. His boss is unable to persuade him to resume work and begins to pity him. However, Bartleby's inexplicable idleness ultimately drives his master to distraction.
Despite changing office space, he cannot escape Bartleby, who has moved into the old office space and refuses to leave. He is eventually taken to prison for vagrancy, where he refuses to eat and passes away, leaving the narrator to deal with his mixed emotions.
This work has been interpreted as a commentary on the futility of modern urban life, with its featureless and interchangeable offices and absence of purpose.

Bartleby eventually gets thrown in prison for not leaving the building, even after the judge is gone. The judge visits him, but Bartleby remains distant.
In the end, Bartleby dies in the courtyard, as the judge reveals that Bartleby had worked at the Dead Letters Office before he had employed him.

Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby the Scrivener" details the passive resistance of a young legal clerk through the eyes of his boss, an older lawyer.
The elder man makes his living copying legal documents in his Wall Street office and hires young Bartleby to assist. Bartleby, however, soon becomes intransigent, calmly but resolutely refusing to do the work for which he is paid.
He simply stops accepting assignments, and remains motionless in the office, even after hours. His boss is unable to persuade him to resume work and begins to pity him. However, Bartleby's inexplicable idleness ultimately drives his master to distraction.
Despite changing office space, he cannot escape Bartleby, who has moved into the old office space and refuses to leave. He is eventually taken to prison for vagrancy, where he refuses to eat and passes away, leaving the narrator to deal with his mixed emotions.
This work has been interpreted as a commentary on the futility of modern urban life, with its featureless and interchangeable offices and absence of purpose.
American author Herman Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener was first published in 1853. He wrote Bartleby the Scrivener amid a storm of criticism from the literary world, and its themes of capitalism, absurdity, and protest have long intrigued readers.

Transcript: This is a story about a man named Bartleby who works as a copyist for a judge. The judge also employs Turkey, Nippers, and Ginger Nut, all of whom have interesting personalities that seem to balance out the work environment.
Work seems to be going fine until one day Bartleby refuses a request from the judge. Bartleby states that, “He would prefer not to.” This is out of character for the diligent worker, so the judge asks him again to do the task. Again, Bartleby states that he would prefer not to.
This behavior of refusal to work grows, as Bartleby then refuses to leave the office. He begins to live there, just staying at his desk, eating snack cakes, and staring out of the window at a brick wall.
The judge asks Bartleby to either work or leave, hoping to not have to throw Bartleby out. However, Bartleby continues to stay in the office, which forces the non-confrontational judge to move his business elsewhere.
Bartleby eventually gets thrown in prison for not leaving the building, even after the judge is gone. The judge visits him, but Bartleby remains distant.
In the end, Bartleby dies in the courtyard, as the judge reveals that Bartleby had worked at the Dead Letters Office before he had employed him.

Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville (1819--1891). It first appeared anonymously in two parts in the November and December 1853 editions of Putnam's Magazine, and was reprinted with minor textual alterations in his The Piazza Tales in 1856.

July 3, 1840 Soren Kierikegaard completed his examination for his degree (magna cum laude) and entered the Pastoral Seminary November 17, 1840. He preached his first sermon at Holmens Kirke (Holmens Church) January 12 of the same year. Then in 1843 he began to publishing books one after another, and sometimes two or three on the same day, until Sept. 10, 1851 with the publication of "For Self-Examination Recommended to the Present Age".
Kierkegaard stopped publishing any books at all until Dec 18, 1854 when he began publishing articles in a newspaper called "The Fatherland". The articles were completed in May of 1855 and he began his own publication called "The Instant". He continued publishing articles until Sept 24, 1855 when he entered the hospital Sept 24, 1855 and died November 11, 1855.

Bartleby, the Scrivener
"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" (1853) is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville, first serialized anonymously in two parts in the November and December editions of Putnam's Magazine, and reprinted with minor textual alterations in his The Piazza Tales in 1856. Numerous essays are published on what according to scholar Robert Milder "is unquestionably the masterpiece of the short fiction" in the Melville canon.
Plot
The narrator, an elderly, unnamed Manhattan lawyer with a comfortable business, relates the story of the strangest man he has known: Bartleby. At the start of his story the lawyer already employs two scriveners to copy legal documents by hand: Nippers and Turkey. An increase in business leads him to advertise for a third, and he hires the forlorn-looking Bartleby in the hope that his calmness will soothe the irascible temperaments of the other two.
At first, Bartleby produces a large volume of high-quality work. But one day, when asked to help proofread a document, Bartleby answers with what soon becomes his perpetual response to every request—"I would prefer not to." To the dismay of the lawyer and to the irritation of the other employees, Bartleby performs fewer and fewer tasks, and eventually none. The narrator makes several futile attempts to reason with him and to learn something about him; and when he stops by the office unexpectedly, he discovers that Bartleby has started living there.
