Bill Dixon (October 5, 1925 – June 16, 2010) was an American musician, composer, visual artist, and educator. Dixon was one of the seminal figures in the free jazz movement. He played the trumpet, flugelhorn, and piano, often using electronic delay and reverberation as part of his trumpet playing.
Dixon hailed from Nantucket, Massachusetts. His family later moved to Harlem, New York City when he was about 7. His studies in music came relatively late in life, at the Hartnette Conservatory of Music (1946–1951). He studied painting at Boston University and the WPA Arts School and the Art Students League. During the early 1950s he had a job at the United Nations, and founded the UN Jazz Society.
In the 1960s Dixon established himself as a major force in the jazz avant-garde movement. In 1964, Dixon organized and produced the 'October Revolution in Jazz', four days of music and discussions at the Cellar Café in Manhattan. The participants included notable musicians Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra among others. It was the first free-jazz festival of its kind. Dixon later founded the Jazz Composers Guild, a cooperative organization that sought to create bargaining power with club owners and effect greater media visibility. He was relatively little recorded during this period, though he co-led some releases with Archie Shepp and appeared on Cecil Taylor's Blue Note record Conquistador! in 1966.

The Yamaha YZF-R1, or R1, is an open class sport bike, or superbike, motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha Motor Company since 1998.
Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 after redesigning the Genesis engine to create a more compact engine by raising the gearbox input shaft and allowing the gearbox output shaft to be placed beneath it. This design feature was revolutionary, called a 'stacked gearbox', it has set a precedent for other manufacturers to follow. This "compacting" of the engine made the total engine length much shorter overall, thereby, allowing the wheelbase of the motorcycle to be shortened significantly. This, in turn, allowed the frame design to place the weight of the engine in the frame to aid handling because of an optimized center of gravity. The swingarm was able to be made longer without compromising the overall wheelbase, which was a short 1385mm. These features, combined with a steep fork angle, exceptional brakes and racing streamlining, created a bike that was unbeatable on the race track at the time. Four Kehin CV carburetors of 40mm diameter fed fuel to the engine, 140 bhp was claimed by the factory, at the countershaft. USD 41mm front forks supplied by KYB mounted 300mm semi-floating disk brakes. The instrument panel was revolutionary, having an electrical problem, self diagnosis system inbuilt, and digital speed readout. The exhaust system utilised an EXUP valve, which controlled the exhaust gas flow, to maximise engine power production at all revs, creating a high powered but also torquey engine. The twin headlights were powerful, allowing high speed travelling at night. The bike had a compression ratio of 11.8:1 with a six-speed transmission and multi-plate clutch.

From self-titled LP, 2008 [Thrill Jockey] Jazz cornet player and sound explorer Rob Mazurek also leads the Exploding Star Orchestra. The group's second album was blessed with the appearance of obscure legend and trumpeter, Bill Dixon. Aside from this track and the album being very strong, I have to say that capturing Bill Dixon in a recording is special since I don't think there are many Dixon audio documents laying around given his number of years in the business. Mazurek composed this track. I took a short cut and skipped transcribing the personnel list from my CD liner notes. Actually, the fact that Shepp and Dixon took, of all things, 'Somewhere' as a basis for improvisation is not at all surprising. (Many jazz greats have shown a special liking - at which some of their listeners have shaken their heads in disbelief - for rather hackneyed tunes. We need only recall Miles Davis' 'Some Day My Prince Will Come', Monk's 'Just a Gigolo', or Colemans' 'Embraceable You'.) What *is* astounding is what Shepp and Dixon do with 'Somewhere.' They pla...

This is a rare interview with Bill Dixon before he was an XDL champion. It gives some rare insight into his personality and how he got started in the sport. If you are an emerging competitor, you will want to see this. We apologize for the poor video and audio quality. And yes, that B/W and reddish effect isn't nice, but it is better than the original footage. If it bothers you, just close your eyes and listen to Bill's words. That is what matters.

From self-titled LP, 2008 [Thrill Jockey] Jazz cornet player and sound explorer Rob Mazurek also leads the Exploding Star Orchestra. The group's second album was blessed with the appearance of obscure legend and trumpeter, Bill Dixon. Discogs.com did a decent job: Bass -- Matthew Lux Clarinet, Saxophone -- Matt Bauder Cornet -- Josh Berman, Rob Mazurek Double Bass -- Jason Ajemian Drums -- John Herndon Drums, Timpani -- Mike Reed Flute, Voice...
