STORYLINE:
Peru's presidential hopeful, retired
Lt. Col. Ollanta Humala, distanced himself on Wednesday from
Venezuela's leftist leader
Hugo Chavez while accusing his opponent of being a pawn
U.S. President George W. Bush.
Humala told
CPN radio that Chavez should butt out of Peru's internal affairs.
Humala, a fiery nationalist, has been hurt by Chavez's enthusiastic endorsements of his candidacy, which has scared many
Peruvians, fearful that if the former army officer wins Sunday's runoff, the country will fall under Chavez's influence.
Humala said it is his opponent, former President Alan Garcia who "is going to be a pawn of the
United States.''
"Mr. Alan Garcia has the blessing of the American embassy and the Ambassador to the United States for Peru", said Humala, who trails Garcia by about 10 percentage points in the polls.
Humala, then, angrily accused Montesinos of working with Garcia's centre-left
Aprista party to undermine his candidacy.
" The last acquisition in his social front has been Mr. Vladimiro Montesinos, who has come out to disgrace Ollanta Humala and has now published a book trying to place Ollanta Humala inside the axis of evil", he said.
Peru's jailed former spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos alleged in a booklet written in prison that presidential candidate Ollanta Humala is a pawn of Cuban and Venezuelan intelligence.
Alan Garcia also spoke to a local radio reporter on Wednesday, saying he would be "separate to any foreign influence."
"Peru is not a part of any axis. It is not a part of Washington's axis, nor Mr. Chavez's axis. Peru will maintain a sovereign position and will handle its international and commercial affairs according to how the Peruvian people see fit without becoming a part of any instigated movement proposed by Mr. Chavez," said Garcia.
Also President Alejandro Toledo addressed the nation on Wednesday.
