The 70-year-old Virgin Galactic founder lifted off from a runway near the small town of Truth and Consequences in New Mexico on the maiden passenger flight of his company's SpaceShipTwo spaceplane.
Dubbed the VSS Unity, it lifted to about 50,000ft by a specially made aeroplane, WhiteKnightTwo, before detaching from the mother ship, firing its hybrid rocket engine and climbing beyond Earth's atmosphere into space.
Sir Richard enjoyed a few minutes of weightlessness and unbeatable views through Unity's 12 windows, before re-entering the atmosphere and gliding back down to a conventional landing.
The flight took about an hour in total.

Sajid Javid jeered by GPs as they hit out at 'malicious criticism' over face-to-face appointments
GPs have complained about the "malicious criticism" doctors are facing after finding themselves at the centre of a "public storm" over plans to increase face-to-face appointments.

North Korea has attracted attention after releasing bizarre footage of a military show of force which shows troops being subject to gruelling tests of strength and pain.
But, according to professional magician Michael J Fitch, there may be more than meets the eye.
"It is impressive when you watch the video, but if the UK government wanted to produce this sort of video all they've got to do is literally go to a circus or a karate school and we could show even greater strength with children doing the same thing", the member of The Inner Magic Circle said.
In a video interview for The Telegraph, Mr Fitch weighs in on each of the stunts performed by the North Korean troops, and what sort of skills are truly needed to do them.
