The original song http://youtu.be/B4CRkpBGQzU was written by
Eric Bazilian, who was working on an album with
Rob Hyman and
Rick Chertoff. Says Bazilian, "For me, the song was more about what happens to you when you look at something that has completely changed your world view, which could be meeting God, it could be meeting an alien, it could be a near-death experience, it could be anything like that. Just how everything you know is wrong, or everything you know is right, and you didn't know it." Bazilian: "In my case, it's not a religious thing, I'm not a religious person. My relationship with the absolute is very private and personal. I'm not trying to bring anybody around to any way of thinking. You don't write songs like that, they write you. When I write songs, I don't have any agenda. I often learn a lot about what I'm thinking about any given issue from the songs I write about it. There was no conscious decision to write a song with the "G" word in it, but it ended up sort of summing up my world view inadvertently, just by the words that happened to pour out of me at the time."
The original song seems neither to be for nor against God, but
Jesus perhaps indicated how He might view such indifference in
Revelation 3:15-16: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
In contrast, the ApologetiX parody lyrics are unambiguous and leave no room to doubt the reality, existence and involvement of God in our world and in our lives.
ApologetiX quote the following
Bible verses in connection with the song:
Philippians 2:5-8
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as
Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Isaiah 52:14-15
Just as there were many who were appalled at him—his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness—so he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.
Isaiah 53:2-3
He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Hebrews 4:14-16
Jesus the
Great High Priest
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the
Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the
Father, full of grace and truth.
Lyrics:
God had a name - they called Him Jesus
He was born into this place just like the rest of us
You know His story
Why do you act as if you just don't get it?
And you, you - got His grace
You, you - got His book
You, you - you, you, you
Honey, God was one of us
He was not anonymous
And His name was called Jesus
It's time to make His name known
God had a face
It didn't look like any you’d wanna see
Isaiah said that He’d be lightly esteemed
And be rejected and be treated with disgrace
Like all of the prophets
And you, you - got His grace
You, you got His book
You, you, you, you, you
Honey, God was one of us
He did not look glamorous
When he saved us on a cross
Tryin' to make us a
home
Dyin' to make us a home
Back up in
Heaven on His throne
Nobody but Him could atone
So put your hope in Him alone
And you, you - got His grace
You, you got His book
You, you, you, you, you
Honey, God was one of us
Paid the cost for all of us
As the savior on the cross
Tired and naked, a-lone
Just dyin' to make us a home
Christ the holy cornerstone
Now up in Heaven on His throne
We've gotta make His name known
Somebody grab the microphone
Inform that poor lady named
Joan
