St. Louis (/seɪnt ˈluːɪs/ or /sənt ˈluːɪs/) is a city and port in the U.S. state of Missouri. The city developed along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which forms Missouri's border with Illinois. In 2010, St. Louis had a population of 319,294; a 2014 estimate put the population at 317,419, making it the 60th-most populous U.S. city and the second-largest city in the state in terms of city proper population. The St. Louis metropolitan area includes the city as well as nearby areas in Missouri and Illinois; with an estimated population of 2,905,893, it is the largest in Missouri and one of the largest in the United States. St. Louis was founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau and named after Louis IX of France. Claimed first by the French, who settled mostly east of the Mississippi River, the region in which the city stands was ceded to Spain following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War. Its territory east of the Mississippi was ceded to the Kingdom of Great Britain, the victor. The area of present-day Missouri was part of Spanish Louisiana from 1762 until 1803.
KETC, virtual channel 9 (UHF digital channel 39), is a PBS member television station located in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. The station is owned by St. Louis Regional Public Media. KETC maintains studio facilities located at the Dana Brown Communications Center on Olive Street in St. Louis' Grand Center neighborhood, and its transmitter is located in South St. Louis County.
The station first signed on the air on September 20, 1954, the call letters KETC represent the St. Louis Educational Television Comission, the former name of the organization responsible for bringing public television to St. Louis. It was the first community-licensed educational television station in the United States. The station's first general manager was Shelby Storck, who also emceed the station's first evening of broadcasting.
KETC originally broadcast from temporary studios in McMillan Hall on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, with transmitting facilities atop the former Boatmen's Bank Building (now the Marquette Building) in downtown St. Louis. In 1955, it moved to the Julius and Freda Baer Memorial Building, also on the Washington University campus. It was the first facility specifically built for an educational television station. It activated its current tower in South County in 1970, allowing it to begin color broadcasts a year later. In 1998, the station moved its studios from the Washington University campus to the Dana Brown Communications Center in the Grand Center district.

Philip Cortelyou Johnson (July 8, 1906 – January 25, 2005) was an influentialAmerican architect. He is especially known for his postmodern work from the 1980s and beyond, as well as his collaborations with John Burgee.
In 1930, he founded the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 1978 he was awarded an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal and in 1979 the first Pritzker Architecture Prize. He was a student at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Johnson was gay, and has been called "the best-known openly gay architect in America." He came out publicly in 1993. In 1961, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1963.
Johnson died in his sleep while at his Glass House retreat in 2005. He was survived by his partner of 45 years, David Whitney, who died later that year at age 66.
Johnson was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was descended from the Jansen family of New Amsterdam, and included among his ancestors the Huguenot Jacques Cortelyou, who laid out the first town plan of New Amsterdam for Peter Stuyvesant. He attended the Hackley School, in Tarrytown, New York, and then studied at Harvard University as an undergraduate, where he focused on history and philosophy, particularly the work of the Pre-Socratic philosophers. Johnson interrupted his education with several extended trips to Europe. These trips became the pivotal moment of his education; he visited Chartres, the Parthenon, and many other ancient monuments, becoming increasingly fascinated with architecture.

This is an archival copy of an episode from the PBS video art series "Airtime" produced by KETC in 1980. (Airtime 467, program number 301) Host: Roy Zurick. Featured artist: Gregory Gutenko. First broadcast of "My Motherland the Tractor", "Flora's Fancy Free", and "Nervous on the Road" (world's first long-time-exposure time-lapse film?) KETC maintained a broadcast blanket license to cover recorded music as used for their productions (and as reported annually to the licensing agency). This video is a historical document (35 years old) from their PBS series "Airtime".

From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS producer Anne-Marie Berger traces Katherine Dunham's life, artistic career and influence on the people where she lived in East St. Louis, Illinois. Although it was broadcast shortly after Dunham's death in May 2006 at age 96, the profile contains what is believed to have been her last interview, conducted by Berger at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in October 2005.

Ripping apart the standard NTSC analog color bar signal. Experimental video from 1982. The NTSC color bar reference signal is distorted by attacking the horizontal and vertical blanking sync timing signals using a time base corrector. The resulting color bar chaos was rephotographed off a monitor since the video itself was too unstable to record directly to tape. This short video art piece was inspired by the 'color tuning guide channel' that American Cablevision included in its channel lineup in the 1980s. The odd thing about the 'color tuning guide', which was the typical NTSC color bar display, was that the average cable subscriber was not likely to know how the reference colors were supposed to look. Were any of them television broadcast engineers? So how would they know if the col...
Simple video art piece emphasizing the highlight trailing typical of vintage tube cameras. Doesn't quite make downtown Kansas City look like the Las Vegas Strip. Edited to show just the down street views. Broadcast on the regional PBS film and video art series "Airtime" in 1982. Produced by KETC in St. Louis, Missouri.
Early 1976 student film that innovated the long exposure time-lapse "streaked streetlight motion blur" moving car P.O.V. cinematic effect which was popularized six years later by the theatrical film Koyaanisqatsi in 1983. Third place winner in the 1977 Midwest Invitational Film Festival (Kansas City Art Institute). Broadcast in 1980 by the mid-west regional PBS film and video art series "Airtime" (produced at KETC St. Louis). Shot on scavenged television news film stock using a used $50 Bolex 16mm camera (extremely low-budget). Direction and Cinematography by Don DeHass. Special effects by Gregory Gutenko.
Bellefontaine is one of the most historic — and most beautiful — rural cemeteries that sprung up around America's burgeoning cities in the early- to mid-1800's. Bellefontaine is now in the midsts of executing a 10-year Master Plan of improvements, and has recently been granted official "Arboretum" status, making it virtually unique in the nation. As a part of TOKY's rebranding of Bellefontaine, we wrote, shot, edited and produced a new 30 second television spot — their first ever — which premiered Sunday, October 13th during Downton Abbey on KETC. Special thanks go to Coolfire Media for sound design.
This brief film was shot during a road trip the filmmaker, Frank Paine, made from St. Louis, Missouri to New York, New York in the early '60s. (The film shows a copyright of 1962.) My late father, who I believe was a colleague of Paine's, worked at the time as a producer at educational television station KETC in St. Louis and owned a 16mm print. Around 2005 I decided to have a DVD-quality digital copy made; as you can see, the colors had long since faded. I do want to note that while I don't own the copyright for this film I'm also unaware of the whereabouts of the copyright holder. I'm more than happy to take the film down should Mr. Paine object. Indeed, I'd be delighted to hear from him since I've admired this film since the late 1960s and would love to have the chance to ask him ...
