United Nations - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon video message on the occasion of International Day of Peace on 21 September 2015.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All” which aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace.
The work of the United Nations would not be possible without the initial partnerships that were active in its creation and the thousands of partnerships each year between governments, civil society, the private sector, faith-based groups and other non-governmental organizations that are needed to support the Organization in achieving its future goals.

STORY: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held bilateral talks on Friday (December 18) with the foreign ministers of France, Turkey and Lebanon.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu and Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebral Bassil were in New York to attend a high-level meeting on Syria.
The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously agreed a resolution endorsing an international roadmap for a Syria peace process, a rare show of unity among major powers on a conflict that has claimed more than a quarter million lives.
The resolution came after Russia and the United States clinched a deal on a text. The two powers have had very different views on what should happen in Syria, where Islamic State militants control considerable territory that Western governments suspect has been a launch pad for attacks on Western nations and Russia.
Agreement on a resolution came after meetings earlier in the day of the so-called International Syria Support Group at New York's Palace Hotel which was attended by foreign ministers from 17 countries.

The United Nations formally kicked off the race for the next secretary-general on Tuesday and the world body's 193 members were encouraged to consider putting forward a woman for the top job that has been held by a man for the past 70 years.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a former South Korean foreign minister, is due to step down at the end of 2016 after serving two five-year terms. The job customarily rotates between regions, with Eastern Europe next on the list.
The 15-member Security Council, including veto powers China, Russia, the United States, Britain and France, traditionally considers an undisclosed list behind closed doors and recommends a candidate to be elected by the General Assembly.
In a bid to boost transparency, the presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly - U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power and Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark - sent a letter on Tuesday to U.N. member states to begin the search for Ban's replacement by outlining the process and soliciting candidates.
"Convinced of the need to guarantee equal opportunities for women and men in gaining access to senior decision-making positions, Member States are encouraged to consider presenting women, as well as men, as candidates," they wrote.
The General Assembly requested such a letter be sent when it adopted a resolution on the issue in September.
"This fires the starting gun for the race to be the next secretary-general," said British U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, who helped draft the letter, adding that it brought gender equality, transparency and clarity to the process.
The letter simply notes "the regional diversity in the selection of previous Secretaries-General."
U.N. officials say they hope a list of candidates will be completed by March. The letter said contenders will have the opportunity to meet informally with member states and that the Security Council will begin its selection process in July.
Lykketoft said so far two candidates had been put forward for selection - former U.N. General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim of Macedonia and Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic.
"We invite candidates to be presented with proven leadership and managerial abilities, extensive experience in international relations and strong diplomatic, communication and multilingual skills," said Power and Lykketoft in the letter.
They asked states to present candidates to them in a letter, which would then be circulated to the 193 U.N. members.

The UN rose out of the ashes of war, as nations came together in their determination to never again repeat the horrors of WWII. As the UN turns 70, the world seems more divided and paralysed to act than ever. Has it become a relic of the past, and is it capable of adapting to the security challenges of the 21st century? Oksana is joined by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to negotiate these issues.

The UN was created in the wake of World War II as a system to promote peace and avoid war. But with conflicts proliferating and the UN Security Council frequently deadlocked by the veto system, its legitimacy and usefulness have been brought into question. Can the UN evolve to meet modern security challenges, and does it have the capacity to ensure the respect of international law? Oksana is joined by Jan Eliasson, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, to analyse these issues.

What powers do the pope and the UN secretary-general have in common? University of Innsbruck professor Jodok Troy argues that due to the unsettled nature of contemporary international affairs, the power of unbiased moral suasion by legitimate, international authority figures—such as Pope Francis and Ban Ki-moon—may be increasing. Troy will discuss how Pope Francis and Ban Ki-moon utilize relationships and persuasion, as well as highlight the distinctive religious capital associated with the Pope. Eric Patterson, Berkley Center research fellow, will introduce the event.

The Syrian war has produced an endless stream of refugees and internally displaced persons. And as winter approaches, their dire situation is fast becoming critical. How well are humanitarian organisations able to reach and help people in need, and can they safeguard against losing their neutrality amid the suffering and hardship they encounter on a daily basis? Asia is the most disaster prone and conflict prone region of the world. It houses more than half of the world's population and faces a challenging future when considering the possible impacts of urbanisation, population growth, conflict climate change, resource scarcity and shocks. At the same time Asia has made great strides since the turn of the century in developing capacity to manage disasters and crises.
Ms. Amos will reflect on the role that Asia is increasingly playing in humanitarian affairs, outline areas where she feels that still more can be done, and link her thoughts to the emerging discussion around the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit process and the Summit's regional consultation for North and South-East Asia (Tokyo, Japan from 23 to 24 July 2014).
Launching the first regional consultation in West Africa on 19 July, Ms. Amos issued a call to action: "I know that changing the way we work will not be easy, but we have already seen some incremental change. What we now need is a step change in the way we work together."
To encourage broad participation in the lead up to the World Humanitarian Summit, an online consultation has also been launched; please go to www.worldhumanitariansummit.org to register and share your views and ideas to shape the future of humanitarian action.
