Dominica (/ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/ DOM-i-NEE-kə;French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Lesser Antilles region of the Caribbean Sea, south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 metres (4,747 ft) elevation. The population was 72,301 at the 2014 census. The capital is Roseau, located on the leeward side of the island.
The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago/Arawak and later colonised by the Europeans, predominately by the French, who arrived at the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493 ("Sunday" = "Domenica" in Italian). Great Britain took it over in 1763 after the Seven Years' War and gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.
Its name is pronounced with emphasis on the third syllable, related to its former Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot (also known as the imperial amazon), is found only on Dominica and is the island's national bird and features on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.
Punta Cana is part of the Punta Cana-Bávaro-Veron-Macao municipal district, in the municipality of Higüey, in La Altagracia Province, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. The area has beaches and balnearios which face both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and it has been a popular tourist destination since the 1970s.
The Punta Cana area has an estimated population of 100,000, with an annual growth rate of 6%. To the north, it borders the village and beach of Cabeza de Toro, and the Bávaro and El Cortecito beaches. The nearest city, the 500-year-old Higüey, is 45 kilometres (28 mi) away, which takes about an hour to reach by car. European entrepreneurs, particularly Spanish hotel chains, own all but two of the over 50 megaresorts at the Punta Cana tourism destination.
The province’s 100-kilometre (62 mi) coastline tends to be mildly windy. The ocean waters are mainly shallows, with several natural marine pools in which visitors can bathe without danger. From north to south, the main beaches are Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bávaro, El Cortecito, Las Corales and Cabeza de Toro, all north of the cape; and Cabo Engaño, Punta Cana and Juanillo south of the cape.

The Waitukubuli National Trail is the Caribbean’s first long distance trail, covering 115 miles throughout the island. Designed to be hiked over several days, it’s divided into 14 segments that run through local villages, the Carib territory, and ruins of 18th century French settlements, where runaway slaves escaped. While staying at Secret Bay you can enjoy a different way of seeing some of the highlights of segments 13 and 14 – by sea. Take a leisurely boat ride from Secret Bay’s property to Capuchin, the northern most point on the island. Along the way your guide will explain the sites you can see on land, and stop so you can snorkel our reefs. Welcome to Dominica Crossing, a remote and rugged island trail race. The Caribs, who settled here in the 14th century, called the island Waitikubuli, which means 'Tall is her Body.' Dominica (DOM-in-EEK-a): This small volcanic island has many names but they all point to a place of unmatched charm, incredible beauty and dramatic terrain features that has been left preserved and unspoiled in its quiet corner of the Caribbean. With several peaks over 4,000ft, it also boasts one of only two World Heritage Sites in the Eastern Caribbean - Dominica's Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Starting at sea level the trail goes right through the heart of the park and climbs up the island's highest peak, Morne Diablotins, 1447 metres (4747 ft). The Waitikubuli Trail is just now complete and completel...
This video was taken on June 29th 2013 when I visited the village of Castle Bruce with Pepper from Pepper Tours. The house in this video was recently sold for about 50,000 $US and sits on a small parcel of land, about 100 feet by 100 feet. The house is in the process of being renovated and has a beautiful view of the Atlantic ocean. What was really astonishing was the variety of fruits growing on the small parcel of land. The young man in the video, Kurt (24 years old), grew up and lives across from this house in the village of Castle Bruce. He shows describes all the fruits and plants on the land, which include several mango trees, pineapple, bread fruit, goose berries, a large and small cinnamon tree, several small lime trees, golden apples, cherries, sugar cane, guava cherries, papaya, ...

Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Erika has caused devastation on the Caribbean island of Dominica, leaving at least 12 people dead and more than 20 missing, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Friday. Erika's center was headed toward the Dominican Republic on Friday morning, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Rain from the storm also affected the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the center said. "The very latest is not what you went to bed with last night," CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said Friday. "This is going to be a rainmaker -- it's not going to be a wind-maker that blows every building down." Erika is expected to remain a tropical storm as it approaches South Florida on Monday. However, the hurricane center said conditions are volatile and they could change in the co...
Dominica Travel Video Guide - Whether you're into trekking high into the mountaintops or exploring the watery world below, Dominica is the place to go for those who prefer hiking boots over high heels and are content with a nightlife where the only music is the murmur of the jungle. Dominica has surprisingly long drives for such a small island, so it's better to pick a spot or two and explore instead of bouncing around. If you can do it in the mountains (hiking, bird-watching, searching for hidden pools and waterfalls) or the water (diving, snorkeling, kayaking), you can do it in your Dominica Travel Adventure. Don't miss the ancient forests of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, home to the otherworldly Boiling Lake and the spectacular Trafalgar Falls.Ju Enjoy your Dominica Travel V...

You should've told me
That your heart wasn't in it anymore
You could've told me
That I would be in this all alone
Was your kiss a waste of time
Were your words just a lie
I wish I would've known that your love wasn't here
I can't think about it
Care about it gotta turn the page
I was so game before you, cool without you
It's on to better days
I can move on and close the door
Do it all you showed me just who you are
It'd be stupid to stay here everyday
Go ahead just Run Away
(Run Away, Run Away, Run Away,
Run Away, Run Away, Run Away,
Run Away, Run Away, Run Away,
Run Away, Run Away, Run Away,
Run Away)
Now that it's over
Gotta put my life back together again
I'm movin forward
Don't know where I'm going
Just can't turn back now
I got nothing left to give
Cause you took the best of me
I wish I would've known that your love wasn't here
I can't think about it
Care about it gotta turn the page
I was so game before you, cool without you
It's on to better days
I can move on and close the door
