Dominica (/ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/ DOM-i-NEE-kə;French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Lesser Antilles region of the Caribbean Sea, south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 metres (4,747 ft) elevation. The population was 72,301 at the 2014 census. The capital is Roseau, located on the leeward side of the island.

The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago/Arawak and later colonised by the Europeans, predominately by the French, who arrived at the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493 ("Sunday" = "Domenica" in Italian). Great Britain took it over in 1763 after the Seven Years' War and gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.

Its name is pronounced with emphasis on the third syllable, related to its former Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot (also known as the imperial amazon), is found only on Dominica and is the island's national bird and features on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.

The Chemical Brothers

The Chemical Brothers are a British electronic music band composed of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons originating in Manchester in 1989. Along with The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method, and fellow acts, they were pioneers at bringing the big beat genre to the forefront of pop culture. In the UK, they have had six number one albums and 13 top 20 singles, including two number ones.

History

Formation and early career (1984–95)

Ed Simons was born in Herne Hill, South London on 9 June 1970 to a barrister mother and a father who were not around much when Simons was growing up. Simons' two main interests when he was young were aeroplanes and musicals. Simons attended two South London public schools, Alleyn's School and Dulwich College. During his school years, he developed a fondness for rare groove and hip hop music, having frequented a club called The Mud Club from the age of 14. By the time he left school, his two main musical interests were two Manchester bands, New Order and The Smiths. After finishing school with 11 O levels and three A-levels, he continued on to study history, especially late medieval history, at the University of Manchester.

For some it might be Kraftwerk, but for me, my favourite electronic pioneers are probably Australia's Severed Heads. They were so far ahead of the game that they had to invent a lot of the technology they used. Inspired, playful, never boring and always sonically brilliant they pushed at the frontiers of electronic music more than most. By the late 80s they were pursuing a slightly more polished course and made a series of records that had the potential to reach a much larger audience. Possibly because of their name they never quite managed that, but they had several big club hits; the dub versions of which crossed over into the nascent house scene. I am honoured that I am able to make the dubs of those three 12"s from 1988 - 1990 available again. On side A is “Greater Reward (Dub)” which has possibly thee most beautiful piano in the history of dance music. Often sampled but never equalled, it still brings joy to dancefloors 27 years after it was released. Severed Heads original production and mastering was so ahead of the game that it needed only the slightest re-master. The original, while perfect in every way was always tricky to dj with as THAT piano was right at the start so if it was mixed in, it wouldn't get heard until much later in the track. I've slightly rearranged it for dj use but haven't added anything whatsoever. Side A also includes the majestic original. On the AA side. “Big Car (Crash Dub)” is a masterclass in how to make a track that chugs that is tedium free. At the time it had possibly the heaviest kick drum I'd ever heard and was akin to a mutant cousin of one of David Morales legendary Red Zone house dubs. “All Saints Day (Saints Day Dub)” rounds off the EP with future looking sound design, hypno bass and trademark Severed Heads edit magic. He went nuts over its cowbell delirium bump n' grind and it has been a constant secret weapon in his sets all year. When he found out it wasn't scheduled for release a notion formed for Optimo Trax to put it out and a few months later the Mia Dora guys delivered three other tracks to form an EP, including a track in collaboration with long time Glasgow doyen MASH. We live in a time of hyperbole overdose. We are told everything is "amazing", "essential", "massive", "killing it", "smashing it" etc. etc. to the point where we are no longer given credit to make up our own minds. Optimo Trax attempts to cut through the bullshit by releasing records that hopefully speak for themselves. The label only releases tracks that we would play ourselves in a dj set and that we think will stand the test of time. This is why our releases are all AA sides as we have 100% confidence in every track we release. With regards to the Un.sub EP, it was very difficult to decide which track should sit where on the EP as all four tracks could have been the A1. Think of this release a quadruple A side. If any of these fail to work on a dancefloor we will offer a full refund (and also offer tips on where you might be going wrong). LUMA is a project by Dave Clark from Glasgow. Dave had his first release as a member of State Of Flux in 1993 on T&B; vinyl, the label Twitch ran with his dj partner of that era, Brainstorm. Twitch and Dave have continued to work together in various ways ever since - He has released records as Truffle Club and Big Ned on Optimo Music and worked with Twitch from 2005 - 2010 remixing a plethora of artists under the Optimo (Espacio) moniker before fatherhood necessitated him focusing on changing nappies rather than programming synths. Dave has also recorded under various aliases for R&S;, Numbers, Stuffrecords, Dissident and Wireblock. The twentieth anniversary of that first release seemed a fitting date for Dave to unleash his monster new club music alter ego, LUMA on Optimo Trax. Twitch thinks Dave is the best producer in Scotland and endlessly weeps into his gin and tonics about how unprolific Dave is, so was ecstatic when the 4 killer tracks were delivered that make up this third Optimo Trax EP. These have been thoroughly road tested over the last few months at gigs around the world. All tracks written and produced by D. Clark, Glasgow 2013.
