Update on the state of the channel and plans for the future. You can really help me out by supporting extra content. The other thing I didn't mention was the crippling severe allergies/asthma getting in the way of recording, but I do my best. ;) I hope this video provides some helpful context.
Also I'd rather not play on Voobly because after 16 years of Aoe2, I really enjoy the new expansions/balance on HD to help keep things fresh for me.
Here are some instructions on submitting
Break the
Meta videos:
What qualifies as Break the Meta?
Break the Meta is about showcasing situations where uncommon strategies or civilizations can work well. Your submitted replays should either feature civilizations other than
Huns, Aztecs,
Mayans,
Mongols,
Vikings, (
Chinese on
Nomad, etc) or it can feature those civilizations as long as there is an uncommon/interesting strategy used. I am referring to strategies/civilizations/units that are uncommon in expert games. It does not matter if the uncommon strategy/civilizations wins or loses, in fact it is nice if they do lose from time to time.
The game however, should not be totally one-sided. I am pretty flexible in what constitutes an uncommon strategy, it could be anything from mass
Teutonic Knights or even a brief moment where one player traps the entire opposing army in by building a box of houses. It is also totally fine to submit replays that feature strategies that I have already done a video on.
*If you wish to submit gameplay of yourself or a non-expert player, make sure the strategy is polished and justifiable. Do your best to make it work!
Examples of good Break the Meta replays:
1. 1v1
Goths vs Huns on
Arabia where the Goths player goes for a Huskarl
Rush. While Goths players love going for Huskarls, the Goths civilization is generally very uncommon in an expert 1v1 Arabia game so it will be interesting to see how this replay pans out.
2. 1v1 Byzantines vs Aztecs on
Arena where the Byzantines player goes for mass Cataphracts in the early
Imperial Age. While the Byzantines are known for their Cataphracts, this replay might make a great Break the Meta episode because Cataphracts are often too expensive or slow to create in most situations.
3. 2v2
Spanish + Goths vs Aztecs + Byzantines on
Mongolia where the Spanish player floods the enemy with an army of mostly
Supremacy Villagers.
Going for an army of mostly villagers sounds ridiculous but in this match it might be a reasonably good idea. We’ll have to watch and see!
Examples of bad Break the Meta replays:
1. 1v1 Vikings mirror match on
Islands where both players go for a Galley Rush. The game then transitions into War Galley/
Galleon fights and one player wins with superior micromanagement. This replay might be a great game, but in that case you could submit it under the subject “Aoe2 Expert
Replay.”
2. 1v1
Turks vs Huns on Arabia where the
Turk player goes for mass petards and loses instantly or stomps a very unskilled opponent. This replay might feature an interesting strategy, but the strategy needs to have some reasonable application. I am not looking for complete joke strategies, just uncommon ones. Also the players don’t need to be top experts, but the strategy should not be successful purely due to the opponent making tons of simple mistakes. I would like the submitted strategy to be executed well, so try to avoid sloppy play on both sides. ;)
