A full journey compilation on the 12261 Mumbai Howrah Duronto Express, a revolutionary train which reduced the rail travel time between Kolkata and Mumbai to 26 hours, beating the existing fastest rail connection in this route, the legendary Gitanjali Express, by a whopping six hours. The Mumbai Howrah Duronto, a seventeen coach fully air-conditioned rake, operated from its very onset with posh LHB coaches, covers the 1,968 kilometres between the western and eastern coasts of India at an average speed of 75 kmph, with a maximum permissible speed of 110 kmph and six technical halts at Kasara (Maharashtra), Igatpuri (Maharashtra), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bilaspur (Chhatisgarh) and Tatanagar.
This compilation features the first part of a full journey from Mumbai to Howrah on the Duronto. Heavy monsoon rains had delayed the incoming train, leading to a 20 minute delay in the departure of the Howrah bound Duronto. In Mumbai's packed suburban schedule, this translates to an immediately loss of a travel slot, leading to very sluggish progress till Kalyan, past overflowing suburban station. Post Kalyan, the Kalyan WCAM3 in charge of the Duronto gathers speed as we head towards the Western Ghats through the rugged terrain forming a buffer between the Konkan plains and the ghats.
We arrive at Kasara for our banker attachment as dusk unfolds, and a triple-WAG7 attached (for braker purposes) Geetanjali Exprees comes rolling down the ghats. Ascending up to Igatpuri about 20 minutes later, the WCAM3 gives way to a crisp Itarsi WAP4, and almost immediately, we are racing through the Deccan, storming through large stations such as Nasik and Manmad.
Early next morning we are at Nagpur and the Duronto progresses eastwards in its merry fashion. After a breezy morning run, we skip the station of Gondia and enter the reserved forest between Gondia and Dongargarh at a reduced pace, negotiating sharp curves on either side. Having entered into Chhattisgarh, we undertake possibly our biggest skip of the trip, skipping Durg, and proceed past the massive steel plant of Bhilai. We take the bypass across Raipur, and rejoin the mainline towards Bilaspur. After crossing the Shivnath river after Bhatapara, we reach Bilaspur at about half past nine in the morning, having covered a distance of over 1,200 kilometres in around 16 hours.
On the way, we have some notable crossings such as the Pushpak Express, the Raigarh Gondia Jan Shatabdi Express, the legendary Mumbai Mail, the Bhilai WAM4 hauled Ambikapur Durg Express, the Pune Indore Express, and the Ernakulam Mumbai Duronto Express.

Highlights from a full journey compilation on the Howrah Ranchi Shatabdi Express. Introduced in the latter half of the 1990s, the train was upgraded in November 2013 to LHB rakes. Five Kolkata rail enthusiasts, Chirag da, Souro da, Trayambak da and yours truly undertook a journey on this train on a lovely early January day to Ranchi and back. Major highlights of the journey include some wonderful high speed passage between Howrah and Dhanbad, with some rapid crossings with the New Delhi Sealdah Rajdhani Express and the perennially late Kalka Mail. There was some slow and mundane progress between Dhanbad and Chandrapura. Things brightened up on the approach to Chandrapura as we engaged in some lovely parallel action with the Gomoh Barka Kana Passener, led by a Mughal Sarai WAM4. This was particularly refreshing, as the morning parallel action with the Ganadevta resulted in a lukewarm outcome.
At Chandrapura, we met the Bhubaneshwar Dhanbad Garib Rath, led by a Bondamunda WDM3A, and upon crossing the Damodar River, a Ghaziabad WAP4 waited with the Purushottam Express, its new LHB rakes gleaming in the morning sun. After Chandrapura, we are fully into the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, and the rocky hills of Jharkhand come into view.
After crossing the Subarnarekha, the train curves into Muri, and the Muri Ranchi Ghat section begins. The Howrah WAP7 powers the Shatabdi through the densely forested Chhota Nagpur Hills. Even in the peak of winter, the forests were lush with vegetation, and with the sun sufficiently high into the sky, the Shatabdi's brand new LHB coaches were glistening in the sun, curving tightly left and right through innumerable S-curves.

This compilation focuses on the major station skipped by the Mumbai Howrah Duronto Express. Some of the prominent stations this train blatantly ignores are Kalyan, Nasik Road, Akola, Badnera, Durg (possibly the biggest of them all), Jharsuguda, Rourkela and Kharagpur. This video captures almost all of the major daylight skips and a few of the night/early morning skips such as Nasik, Manmad, Akola, Badnera and Wardha. While a number of stations are negotiated at a sedate pace courtesy the large number of crossovers, the Duronto simply blazes stations such as Nasik, Manmad, Chalisgaon, Bhandara Road, Bhilai Rajkharsawan and Panskura.

The first of the three parts of a compilation of an entire journey from Howrah to New Delhi in the 12273 Howrah-New Delhi Duronto Express.
With Howrah WAP-4 #22409 in the lead, we depart Howrah at 12:47 pm, delayed by 2 minutes. It was kind of Ankit Ray Ghatak, Subhankar Das and Anuvab Bhattacharjee to come to Howrah to see us off.
Watch the Duronto's speedy run through the Howrah Barddhaman Chord line and the quadruple Barddhaman-Asansol section. At Asansol, we meet the Ajmer Sealdah Express while skipping the station. In the ELS, we spot many new locos and again pick up speed defeating the Asansol-Barabhum MEMU in a parallel action.
We regain speed after Asansol crusing past the Chhota Ambona plateau and the fields full of white Kash-Flowers of autumn. At Dhanbad, we meet the stranded Double Decker Express and come to a halt ahead of time.
The run after Dhanbad is characterized by the sal forests of Hazaribagh and the distant hills of the Chhota Nagpur plateau. We skip Hazaribagh Road and Koderma at 120 kmph flat. AND, we enter the ghat section.
Dusk falls as we traverse the ghats and the three tunnels after skipping Gujhandi and Dilwa. At Paharpur, as we have descended the ghats, darkness engulfs us and we encounter a storm. The remaining distance is traversed within a sharp spell of rainfall and some constant 120 kmph action.
At 18:57, we finally enter Gaya in a sharp left hand curve for our second technical halt.
Please don't miss the next parts for some awesome night action of the Duronto featuring some stunning Rajdhani crossings.

India is a subcontinent with a long history, a land of legend, fantasy and reality.A country that extends from the Himalayas in the north to the semi-desert terrain and tropics of the south. A place of incredible contrasts and fascinating splendour. Delhi is the political and administrative capital of India and a melting pot of both culture and religion. A constantly expanding metropolis built on the site of twelve former cities and centre of power for almost a thousand years. Jama Masjid, the Friday Mosque, is one of ancient Delhi’s main landmarks that was bequeathed to the city by the mogul king, Shah Jahan and close to the mosque is the bazaar district of Chandni Chowk, a busy commercial area. The white temples of Ranakpur are the sanctuaries of the Jains and are situated in a picturesque valley to the west of the Aravalli Mountains north of Udaipur. At around the same time that Buddhism was introduced to the area, Jainism also arrived, the religion of the country’s great hero, Mahavira. Rajasthan is the Land Of The Maharajas in all its splendour, a living fairytale beneath the desert sky. Agra was once the imposing metropolis of the mogul monarchy and today the city has lost nothing of its mediaeval atmosphere. Calcutta, or Kolkata, as it has been known since 2001, is the capital of West Bengal and also the second largest city in India. A city of contrasts that could not be more striking. Each morning hundreds of people go to the Howrah Bridge to bathe on the banks of the Hooghly River, a tributary of the sacred River Ganges. In 1853 Bombay had its first railroad and the Indian rail network was soon extended. The Victoria Terminus was built, one of the most impressive train stations in the world. Incredible India, a remarkable country that has always fascinated travellers by the amazing diversity of its people, culture and landscapes.

The Hooghly River or the Bhāgirathi-Hooghly, called 'Ganga' traditionally, is an approximately 260 kilometres (160 mi) long distributary of the Ganges River in West Bengal, India. It splits from the Ganges as a canal in Murshidabad District at the Farakka Barrage. The town of Hugli-Chinsura, formerly Hooghly, is located on the river, in the Hooghly (district). The origins of the Hooghly name are uncertain, whether the city or the river was named first.
Course
The Farakka Barrage is a dam that diverts water from the Ganges into a canal near the town of Tildanga in Malda district. This supplies the Hooghly with adequate water even in the dry season. It parallels the Ganges, past Dhulian, until just above Jahangirpur where the canal ends and the river takes its own course. Just south of Jahangirpur it leaves the Ganges area and flows south past Jiaganj Azimganj, Murshidabad, and Baharampur. South of Baharampur and north of Palashi it used to form the border between Bardhaman District and Nadia District, but while the border has remained the same the river is now often east or west of its former bed. The river then flows south past Katwa, Navadwip and Kalna. At Kalna it originally formed the border between Nadia District and Hooghly District, and then further south between Hooghly District and North 24 Parganas District. It flows past Halisahar, Chunchura, Konnagar, and Kamarhati. Then just before entering the twin cities of Kolkata (Calcutta) and Howrah, it turns to the southwest. At Nurpur it enters an old channel of the Ganges and turns south to empty into the Bay of Bengal. Two of its well known tributaries are Damodar and Rupnarayan.
Harvest Fields of Bengal
==================
The scenery along the banks of the Hooghly varies considerably. From the sea nothing but sandbanks and mud formations covered with coarse herbage at first greet the eye, then as the river narrows, cultivated rice fields and sleepy hamlets reposing within the foliage of beautiful groves, render the view at once pleasing and picturesque.
Hooghly tidal bore
==============
The tide runs rapidly on the Hugli, and produces a remarkable example of the fluvial phenomenon known as a "tidal bore." This consists of the head-wave of the advancing tide, hemmed in where the estuary narrows suddenly into the river, and often exceeds 7 feet (2.1 m) in height. It is felt as high up as Calcutta, and frequently destroys small boats. The difference from the lowest point of low-water in the dry season to the highest point of high-water in the rains is reported to be 20 feet 10 inches (6.35 m). The greatest mean rise of tide, about 16 feet (4.9 m), takes place in March, April or May - with a declining range during the rainy season to a mean of 10 feet (3.0 m), and a minimum during freshets of 3 feet 6 inches (1.07 m).
History
=========
In its upper reaches the river is generally known as the Bhāgirathi, until it reaches Hooghly. The word Bhāgirathi literally means "caused by Bhagiratha", a mythical Sagar Dynasty prince who was instrumental in bringing the river Ganges from the heavens on to the earth, in order to release his 60,000 grand-uncles from a curse of the saint Kapila.
The river was an important transportation channel in the early history of Bengal, and later with the colonial trading ports. The river's presence is one of the reasons chosen by the British to settle there at Calcutta. The Dutch/French colony at Chandannagar on the Hooghly was once the rival of British Calcutta, but was eclipsed by Calcutta in the colonial wars of the 18th century. The river banks hosted several battles and skirmishes towards the start of the colonial era, including the Battle of Plassey Palashi, as well as earlier wars against Maratha raiders. On eastern bank lie many historic and wealthy towns like Murshidabad, Jangipur and Ziaganj.
In 1974, the Farakka Barrage began diverting water into the Hooghly during the dry season so as to reduce the silting difficulties at Kolkata's port.
Like the rest of the Ganges, the Bhāgirathi-Hooghly is considered sacred to Hindus, and its water is considered holy.
