Thousands of Zimbabweans turned out on Monday to bury their Vice-President and liberation war hero, Joshua Nkomo.
Nkomo, who died last week after a long battle with cancer, was laid to rest in Heroe's Acre in Harare.
Among the mourners was President Robert Mugabe who paid tribute to Nkomo as a hero of the people.
Vice President Joshua Nkomo, hailed as the father of the fight against colonial rule, was buried Monday amid tribal ceremony and military pomp.
Foreign dignitaries from eight African countries and Britain, the former colonial power, and tens of thousands of mourners crammed Heroes' Acre, a shrine outside Harare for the state funeral.
Nkomo died from cancer Thursday, aged 82.
President Robert Mugabe praised Nkomo for his tireless work to free the former British colony of Rhodesia which became independent Zimbabwe in 1980.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"In order to pay both our national and individual respects and last tributes to one who was great amongst us so dedicated to our liberation so fatherly and loving so famous and yet so simple and down to earth"
SUPERCAPTION: President Robert Mugabe
For over nearly five decades Nkomo fought for freedom and economic emancipation from white domination.
Tribal dancers beating drums and carrying traditional shields and spears led a military cortege to Nkomo's grave at the terraced shrine where nearly 40 political and former guerrilla leaders are buried.
Choirs sang hymns and liberation songs.
Some mourners wore tee shirts and waved flags showing a charging bull, the symbol of Nkomo's defunct Zimbabwe African People's Union party, which merged with Mugabe's rival Zimbabwe African National Union in 1988.
Nkomo founded the first black political party in the then Rhodesia in 1952 but never achieved his burning ambition of becoming the first black leader when Zimbabwe gained independence after a bitter guerrilla war that left nearly 40,000 mostly black fighters dead.
In the first democratic parliamentary elections in 1979, Nkomo's party won just 20 seats to the 57 majority captured by Mugabe.

Vice President Joshua Nkomo, the father of Zimbabwe's fight for independence from white colonial rule, has died. He was 82.
Nkomo suffered from prostate cancer, and poor health forced him to largely withdraw from political life last year.
Thandiwe Nkomo, Nkomo's daughter, said he died around 1:30 a-m local time at Harare's main hospital, on Thursday.
Joshua Nkomo was regarded by many as the guiding light of the nation's black nationalist movement, which fought a guerrilla war against white colonial rule for nearly three decades in the former British colony of Rhodesia.
But the traditional leader of the minority Ndebele tribe failed to achieve his goal of becoming the first black leader when Rhodesia became independent Zimbabwe in 1980.
Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, a longtime lieutenant of Nkomo in the nationalist movement, formed a coalition, appointing him in 1980 to the post of Home Affairs Minister in charge of police and internal security.
But the alliance was short-lived.
In February 1982, Mugabe accused Nkomo of plotting a coup and fired him and three ministers of his Zimbabwe African People's Union party.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I have suffered, I have worked so hard for this county, before independence, and I have worked so hard to make independence stick. And now this man turns round and calls himself a traitor. Me, a traitor- a man who has worked so hard for his county. There is no insult to beat this."
SUPER CAPTION: Joshua Nkomo,
Nkomo's passport was seized and he was restricted to his home city of Bulawayo in western Zimbabwe.
Fighters professing loyalty to Nkomo mounted an armed rebellion.
Nkomo saw his sacking as a personal act of revenge by Mugabe.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I have never done anything wrong and Robert (Mugabe) knows this. I tell you, this is for personal power. Let him stand up and deny this. He is frightened of me and my stature and is frightened that he will not win the next election. That is what he is doing- trying to smear me. It is very very sly and very dirty. You don't expect (this) of a president of a country."
SUPER CAPTION: Joshua Nkomo
Mugabe brutally crushed the insurrection with troops drawn mostly from his majority Shona tribe.
Nkomo denied direct links with the rebels, but fled into exile by crossing the Botswana border on foot and in disguise after government troops ransacked his home and killed his driver.
He returned to Zimbabwe to negotiate an end to the rebellion and in 1988 signed a peace accord with Mugabe.
He rejoined the government as vice president.
Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo was born on June 19, 1917.
As a young man, he worked as a truck driver and carpenter to raise money for his education in South Africa.
On returning to Rhodesia, Nkomo rose through the ranks of youth movements and labour unions to form and lead the African National Congress, the nation's first black nationalist political party, in 1952.
In 1957, the African National Youth League merged with Nkomo's ANC and the new group, named the National Democratic Party, elected him president.
Colonial authorities banned the NDP five years later. Nkomo reformed it as ZAPU, which was also immediately banned.
But as Britain granted independence to its other African colonies in the early 1960s, rivalries in the nationalist movement erupted into violence.
Nkomo, Mugabe and other black activist leaders were detained.
Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith declared unilateral independence from Britain in 1965 to retain white rule. Nkomo and Mugabe were to remain in detention for ten years.
Those talks failed. Nkomo remained in Zambia and two years later merged his guerrilla army with Mugabe's Mozambique-based fighters under the banner of the Patriotic Front.

He was seen by many as the guiding light of the nation's black nationalist movement that fought a guerrilla war against white colonial rule for nearly three decades and his death has united a country in grief.
Mugabe was due to fly with the Nkomo's body to the western province of Matabeleland on Friday in a symbolic gesture of tribal unity.
On Thursday he paid a personal visit to Nkomo's family home in Harare, where mourners had gathered to pay their respects.
Mugabe praised Nkomo's work and achievements and expressed his condolences to relatives.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The greatest prayers we can give Umudhala is to ensure that Mama is comforted by us."
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe
Mugabe faces the prospect of tribal dissent now that Nkomo has died.
Nkomo's illness forced him to withdraw from public life last year, spawning a revival of a militant youth wing of his disbanded Zimbabwe African People's Union party in the western Matabeleland province, where the minority Ndebele are concentrated.
The group, known as ZAPU 2000, accuses the government of withholding development in the province and of corruption.
Another group, named Imbovane Yamahlabezulu after a feared 19th century Ndebele warrior force, said Nkomo had bridged tribal differences but that his death would cause division in the province.
President Mugabe has appealed for unity in this southern African nation of 12-point-five million people, 70 per cent of them from Mugabe's majority Shona tribe.
President Mugabe declared five days of national mourning with all flags lowered to half-mast and ordered Monday a public holiday to honour Nkomo.
Nkomo will be given a state funeral on Monday.

Window view of Air Zimbabwe's Z-WPB while operating its daily Harare-Victoria Falls rotation with an interim stop in Bulawayo. During the flight, there was quite some fuel venting through the left wingtip overflow valve (5:22), took a good two minutes of fuel loss until it stopped. Also, during approach you can see the spray of the Victoria Falls (6:50). A big thanks to the very friendly Air Zimbabwe crew.

The co-leader of the Patriotic Front Guerrillas, Zapu President Joshua Nkomo, announced on Wednesday that he would be meeting in Malta with British Foreign Secretary David Owen, to get "claification" of the British position in the face of Ian Smith's so-called "internal settlement". In a statement read to a press conference in Lusaka, Nkomo said that all considerations of the Rhodesian problem "must be within the context of a war situation". He said a cease- fire could only follow "an absolute guarantee of independence". Nkomo also rejected "with contempt" a Rhodesian offer of amnesty for guerrillas. In a question period, Nkomo was asked for his reaction to a comment by Reverend, Ndabaningi Sithole, that after the "internal settlement" the Patriotic Front could have six months to decide whether they wished to return to Zimbabwe or remain outside the country forever
