Financial Aid
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at Arizona Western College will organize funds from federal, state, institutional and private resources. If eligible, post-high school students can apply for financial aid in order to further their education with Arizona Western College. By combining funs from various sources, students can have the opportunity to continue their education after high school. In order to maximize these opportunities, students are required to apply for other federal and state programs. Students are advised to complete their application for financial ad by April 15. Arizona Project WET promotes responsible water stewardship through education by reaching out to children in communities all across the state, including Yuma.
Arizona Water Festivals, like this one featured in the video, aim to give local students a deeper understanding of water in the earth system and of Arizona’s water resources by putting on a water festival event, professional development workshop for teachers, and by involving the whole community.
The City of Yuma Public works staff has worked with APW to organize and coordinate the Yuma Water Festival for several years. The City of Yuma Public Works Department is responsible for water delivery and prides itself on the fact that the water quality is high.

Yuma, AZ – Erika Garcia became a mother at 18. Four years later she is on the eve of graduating from the University of Arizona Yuma with a bachelor’s degree in Family Studies and Human Development.
Some people could be side-tracked by becoming a parent at a young age, but Erika says her daughter Tyler motivated her, “I was pregnant the last three months of my senior year in high school. But to me – I don’t think that was an excuse to not continue my education because I’ve always just been a driven person and I always knew I wanted to go to school.”
Erika graduated from Cibola High School and went on to complete her associate’s degree at Arizona Western College (AWC) and expects to graduate with her bachelor’s this May.
Erika is considering a career in teaching and also counseling. She currently works at a domestic violence shelter and will start a teaching job at St. Francis Catholic School later this year.
Erika also earned a scholarship totaling 24-thousand dollars over four years from College Success Arizona which helped ease the financial burden of paying for college, “Yes! Oh my goodness. I have no debt right now, actually. So it’s helped me more than I can even imagine.”
Along with the scholarship, College Success Arizona provides its students with mentors which are officially called Success Advisers. Erika says Matt Sotelo, her success adviser, has been very supportive, “He’s always been so genuinely caring and non-judgmental. He’s always helped if I’ve had any questions. He’s always proud of the accomplishments that I have. I know that he really cares, and he really does try for us and he just wants the best for us.”
Erika adds that her mother was also a powerful influence on her path toward college, “My mom was a single mother. She just worked really hard to provide for us. She didn’t go to college so I noticed that growing up she was always working. I realized that she was a hard worker and I wanted to be a hard worker as well, but I knew the struggle. I knew how hard it was for her and unfortunately she didn’t get the opportunity that I had.”
For high school students considering college, Erika says, “Start right now looking up classes and looking up your plan. I know plans change but just try and have a set plan that you’re going to do. Take certain classes because you can always get degrees in different areas.”

Yuma (Cocopah: Yuum) is a city in and the county seat of Yuma County, Arizona, United States. It is located in the southwestern corner of the state, and the population of the city was 93,064 at the 2010 census, increased from the 2000 Census Bureau population of 77,515.
Yuma is the principal city of the Yuma, Arizona Metropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Yuma County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the 2008 estimated population of the Yuma MSA is 194,322, though more than 85,000 retirees make Yuma their winter residence.
The area's first settlers were Native American tribes whose descendants now occupy the Cocopah and Quechan reservations. In 1540, expeditions under Hernando de Alarcon and Melchior Diaz visited the area and immediately saw the natural crossing of the Colorado River as an ideal spot for a city, as the Colorado River narrows to slightly under 1000 feet wide in one small point. Later military expeditions that crossed the Colorado River at the Yuma Crossing include Juan Bautista de Anza (1774), the Mormon Battalion (1848) and the California Column (1862).

Arizona Project WET promotes responsible water stewardship through education by reaching out to children in communities all across the state, including Yuma. Arizona Water Festivals, like this one featured in the video, aim to give local students a deeper understanding of water in the earth system and of Arizona’s water resources by putting on a water festival event, professional development workshop for teachers, and by involving the whole community. The City of Yuma Public works staff has worked with APW to organize and coordinate the Yuma Water Festival for several years. The City of Yuma Public Works Department is responsible for water delivery and prides itself on the fact that the water quality is high. -

Erika graduated from Cibola High School and went on to complete her associate’s degree at Arizona Western College (AWC) and expects to graduate with her bachelor’s this May.
Erika is considering a career in teaching and also counseling. She currently works at a domestic violence shelter and will start a teaching job at St. Francis Catholic School later this year.
Erika also earned a scholarship totaling 24-thousand dollars over four years from College Success Arizona which helped ease the financial burden of paying for college, “Yes! Oh my goodness. I have no debt right now, actually. So it’s helped me more than I can even imagine.”
Along with the scholarship, College Success Arizona provides its students with mentors which are officially called Success Advisers. Erika says Matt Sotelo, her success adviser, has been very supportive, “He’s always been so genuinely caring and non-judgmental. He’s always helped if I’ve had any questions. He’s always proud of the accomplishments that I have. I know that he really cares, and he really does try for us and he just wants the best for us.”
Erika adds that her mother was also a powerful influence on her path toward college, “My mom was a single mother. She just worked really hard to provide for us. She didn’t go to college so I noticed that growing up she was always working. I realized that she was a hard worker and I wanted to be a hard worker as well, but I knew the struggle. I knew how hard it was for her and unfortunately she didn’t get the opportunity that I had.”
For high school students considering college, Erika says, “Start right now looking up classes and looking up your plan. I know plans change but just try and have a set plan that you’re going to do. Take certain classes because you can always get degrees in different areas.”

Yuma, AZ – Erika Garcia became a mother at 18. Four years later she is on the eve of graduating from the University of Arizona Yuma with a bachelor’s degree in Family Studies and Human Development.
Some people could be side-tracked by becoming a parent at a young age, but Erika says her daughter Tyler motivated her, “I was pregnant the last three months of my senior year in high school. But to me – I don’t think that was an excuse to not continue my education because I’ve always just been a driven person and I always knew I wanted to go to school.”

Incredible Footage of What Looks To Be A UFO Landing In Arizona! Quote from Eye Witness Jenny Horne "This cellphone footage was recorded at Granada Park in Phoenix Arizona. I started walking towards my car and when i turned back around the U.F.O. was back up in the air. This is the footage you see when it is darker outside. The U.F.O. was a light grey color and had bright lights that glowed in a strange way. The hovering craft made no sound. I know this because after filming when i was driving away from the park, the flying saucer flew over me and it didn't make any noise. I watched this flying saucer at the park for about 25 minutes until I had to leave. I caught 3 separate clips of footage on my cell phone that i have combined onto this video. I had to upload the clips sideways because if i turned them upright it cut off some of the footage. Also, I was moving my camera around a lot in the video because i was trying to keep a close eye on my daughter playing behind me while filming at the same time."

Because insects account for more than half of all described species and have profound effects on our history and culture, knowledge of their contributions and influences is important. Ecologically, insects provide tremendous benefits and equally daunting challenges. They provide critical biological services in pollination, natural products, pest-population regulation, and human nutrition. Insects are also our chief competitors for food, and act as parasites and vectors of human disease, the source of much human misery. The impacts of insects on humans, both positive and negative, are also reflected in music, literature, art, and entertainment. In this class we will explore the diverse ways in which the lives of insects and humans are intertwined.
Specific topics we will address include: entomophagy (eating insects), entomophobia (fear of insects), insects in literature, insects in the movies, insect services and products, insects as totems, silk, and venomous insects.
Arizona's general public seems to have a love/hate relationship with insects (and other arthropods) of all sorts. A survey conducted in Arizona revealed only 6% of participants enjoyed insects found outdoors (only 0.7% took pleasure in finding them inside their homes). A very small segment of US society, however, experiences a genuine neurosis related to arthropods. Most scholars think concern over insects is societally based since these beliefs are associated with Western European culture. Relationships between humans and arthropods in other parts of the world are dramatically different. As an example, entomophagy is commonly practiced in those parts of the world with scant protein resource. In western culture, however, most are repulsed by the idea of eating insects. It is odd that we eagerly consume scavenging lobsters and eschew plant-feeding grasshoppers. We will explore the reasons for this and other cultural inconsistencies.
Professor Emeritus in Entomology, David N. Byrne attended San Jose State College and got his PhD at the University of Idaho. He then joined the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Science, and taught a variety of courses relating to applied entomology and insect biology. He spent summer months in Yuma characterizing the dispersal and bionomics of the sweet potato whitefly, and in the laboratory studied its migratory behavior.
