Take a piece of cardstock and fold it in half. What we are going to end up doing is cut the layers of the city out of the base page. Keep it folded, and we are going to cut a wide layer. Make sure that they are equal. While it is closed, fold it, fold it back, unfold the base page, and push the building forward for the layer. Now from here, we are going to cut another layer right there, and we will cut another one out of there. When you close it, make sure that you can cut on either side of that layer. You're not cutting it together. Make sure that they are even. Be careful not to cut all the way through to the edge of this first layer. Now we are going to make another one down here in the front, and I made a very little incision because I would like this one to be an unequal layer. I'm going to pop that layer forward, and before I fold it, I'm going to cut a little higher on this top part. When we close it, it's going to find where it wants to fold automatically. Just help it along by pushing it forward and crease it. Even though it's folding in the middle, that's OK, because we are going to put a building right on top. I'm going to cut out another building. I'm going to make this one a little taller. Fold it forward, unfold, and pop that out. Actually, I'm going to put another layer in here, but it's going to come in. This one comes out like the other ones, but this layer will pop in, like that, so that we have some more buildings. Now that we have some layers, I'm going to double stick some buildings. I've already pre-cut some rectangles out. You can use whatever shapes you would like. My guy sticks out, so we are going to trim him down. There's one building. I'm going to double stick another one on here. He sticks out too. What I'm going to do is just trim it down. Our city is beginning to form. That is how you make a pop-up city out of layers.

It was my Design Diploma in february 2013 at the HS Niederrhein University for Applied Science in Krefeld Germany. My inspiration was my favorite Luc Besson movie Léon The Professional and the inspiration to produce a pop-up book with a lot of paper engineering techniques, like great pop up artists Robert Sabuda or David A. Carter do. My diploma professors: Prof. Silvia Beck & Prof. Angelika Rösner ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- „A lot of what I do is kind of close to a magic trick.“ – Robert Sabuda, Kinderbuchillustrator und Gestalter von Pop-up-Büchern, über seine Arbeitsweise Fast jedes Kind besitzt irgendwann einmal ein Pop-up-Buch, ein aufklappbares Bilderbuch, in dem aus Papier dreidimensionale Elemente, häufig beweglich, eine Geschichte erzählen. Von Kindheit an faszinierten mich bei Pop-up-Büchern die Kunstfertigkeit und Gestaltung, die Farben und vielfältigen Formen, insbesondere auch das dahintersteckende Handwerk. Pop-up-Bücher machen mich auch heute als Erwachsener noch neugierig, da sie all diese Dinge enthalten – Handwerk, Gestaltungselemente, Design von Farben und Formen – und auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise auch digital sind; ihr Schwerpunkt liegt in der Funktionalität der einzelnen Pop-ups. Die Aufklapp-Bücher beinhalten nicht nur bloße Abbildungen, sondern beherrschen auch die Kunst, Papier mit physikalischer Kraft zu bewegen. Der Grund dafür, dass ich mich in meiner Diplomarbeit mit Pop-up-Büchern beschäftige, ist also die Faszination, die die Dreidimensionalität und Beweglichkeit der einzelnen Entwürfe ausübt, die Dynamik, die durch das Bewegen jeder einzelnen Seite entsteht, nicht zuletzt auch der Respekt vor der Rolle des ‚Papieringenieurs‘ – des Gestalters, dessen Fertigkeiten über die eines bloßen Autors hinausgehen. Unser Unterbewusstsein regelt all die Dinge, die unbewusst ablaufen, deshalb ist ein Popup-Buch etwas, was wir in der Regel sofort mit etwas Positivem verbinden – nämlich mit Erinnerungen aus unserer Kindheit. Wir sind automatisch neugierig auf mehr und freuen uns beim Aufschlagen jeder weiteren Seite. Als Kind und als Erwachsener kann man durch diese Art von Büchern in eine andere Welt eintauchen, vornehmlich als erwachsener Betrachter beschäftigt sich auch zunehmend mit der dahinter-stehenden Technik, die teilweise, wie in dem oben stehenden Zitat von Robert Sabuda, wie ein Zaubertrick wirkt. Basteln mit Papier: Eine Lotusblüten Pop-Up Karte z.B. als Bastelidee für Ostern Diese Lotusblüten Pop-Up Karte sieht kompliziert aus, ist aber sehr leicht zu basteln. Fürs Basteln dieser Karte benötigt man lediglich Papier (z.B. Druckerpapier), Schere, Kleber und Farbstifte. Anmerkung zur Bastelanleitung bei 3:44: Der zweite Streifen wird genauso gebastelt wie der erste. Da Blumen zu Ostern ein großes Thema sind, werde ich diese Karte als Osterkarte verschenken. Wer diese Karte noch passender für Ostern will, kann folgendes ausprobieren: Malt man die Spitzen der Blüten nicht in rosa sondern in gelb aus, wird es ein Schneeglöckchen. Malt man die Blütenblätter ganz in gelb aus oder nimmt man gleich gelbes Tonpapier erhält man eine originelle Osterkarte mit einem Krokus. Legt man die aufgeklappte Karte auf einen Tisch, erhält man eine kreative Tischdeko. Natürlich eignet sich diese Pop-Up Card auch für einige andere Gelegenheiten als kleine Geschenkidee, wie Muttertag, Vatertag oder als Einladungskarte bzw. Glückwunschkarte zum Geburtstag oder Hochzeit. Letztes Jahr habe ich diese Karte als Valentinstag Geschenk verschenkt und es kam sehr gut an. Auf die Vorderseite der Karte kann man bspw. noch ein Herz kleben und auf die Rückseite noch ein Gedicht zum Valentinstag schreiben.
