When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city.
We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fruit leather).

This isn’t a rehash of the popular 80s TV show Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous. This is the Instagram account called “The Rich Kids of Tehran,” and its goal is to prove that despite living in what the we’d think is one of the most heavily repressed societies in the world, these Iranians are swagging it up like your favorite rapper and athlete had an iced-out, gold-plated love-child.
They’re making a point that they are Persian and not Arab, and therefore shouldn’t be associated with terrorists, jihadists, and other “ists” who kill folks. But no matter what ethnic group they’re claiming to represent, usually flaunting your riches is still gonna garner hate from all directions.
Some are saying the junior “1 percenters” may not even be real, and that the accounts owners are stealing their content from elsewhere. I don’t know about that, but whoever owns the account simply thanks us for hating on their success.
Whatever... I’ve been around baller status flossin’ before, and they usually can’t wait to jump in front of a camera. Until that happens, I’m more inclined to believe that all the diamond waving I’m seeing in these pictures is just some keyboard warrior getting his rocks off.

Iranian and Chinese presidents have agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in various domains including economy, trade, defense, technology and tourism.
Hassan Rouhani and Xi Jinping made the comments following a meeting in the Iranian capital Tehran. The Iranian president said Tehran and Beijing also discussed regional and international issues like terrorism and the war on terror. Rouhani hailed Xi’s visit to Iran as a historic trip which marks the opening of a new chapter of bilateral ties. The Chinese leader said Beijing and Tehran should reinforce their cooperation in international bodies like the United Nations and Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He added that the two nations can greatly contribute to global peace. It’s the first official visit in 14 years by a Chinese head of state to Iran. China has been Iran’s top trade partner for six years in a row, with bilateral trade hitting a record of 52 billion dollars in 2014.

Persian Meatballs, Traditional Teahouses, and the Perfect Kebab: MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran (Part 2/3)

For our second installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh visits Nayeb, a white-tablecloth restaurant that's been serving up succulent kebabs in Iran for over 120 years—and even got its initial footing in the bazaar. Their signature dish, koobedih, is a spiced meat kebab dipped in onion juice and cooked over an open flame, served with rice, somagh (sour powdered sumac) butter, and raw egg.
After dining with Nayeb's fifth generation, great-great-great-great-granddaughter Sogol, Gelareh heads to the Baghe Saba Teahouse—a cultural hub akin to a Parisian salon that was once a mens-only enclave but now welcomes families. There, Gelarah is greeted by a buffet of salads, stuffed eggplant, barley soup, and every size of sabzi koofteh (Persian meatballs).

In this episode of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh feeds tankfuls of paddlefish and beluga—valued at up to $35,000 per fish—at the nation's first home of farm-raised caviar, Shilat Fish Farm. Eventually, these prized bottom-dwellers will be killed and harvested in a factory in Northern Iran, but currently they live in conditions similar to their species' natural ocean habitat.
In the spirit of farm-to-table fine dining, Gelareh gets the royal treatment at Li Dona, a members-only restaurant and jazz lounge. She learns that when it comes to fish eggs, bigger is not necessarily better, as she tastes spoonfuls of "black gold" on toast served with butter, onion, egg, pepper, and lemon juice.

Iranian cuisine includes a wide variety of foods ranging from Chelow kabab (rice served with roasted meat: barg, koobideh, joojeh, shishleek, soltani, chenjeh), khoresh (stew that is served with white Iranian rice: ghormeh sabzi, gheimeh, fesenjān, and others), āsh (a thick soup: for example āsh-e anār), kuku (vegetable soufflé), polo (white rice served alone or with the addition of meat, vegetables and herbs, including loobia polo, albaloo polo, sabzi polo, zereshk polo, baghali polo, and others), and a diverse variety of salads, such as Shirazi salad, pastries, and drinks specific to different parts of Iran. The list of Persian recipes, appetizers and desserts is extensive.
Rice
Tah-chin, a savory saffron rice-cake with a filling, commonly marinated chicken fillets.
The ubiquitous Persian Kabab is at most times served with either rice, or bread.
Sweet pilaf or shirin polo
The usage of rice, at first a specialty of Safavid court cuisine, evolved by the end of the 16th century CE into a major branch of Iranian cookery. Varieties of rice in Iran include champa, rasmi, anbarbu, mowlai, sadri, khanjari, shekari, doodi, and others. Traditionally, rice was most prevalent as a major staple item in the rice growing region of northern Iran, and the homes of the wealthy, while in the rest of the country bread was the dominant staple. The varieties of rice most valued in Persian cuisine are prized for their aroma, and grow in the north of Iran.
Lunch and dinner
Lunch and dinner (naahaar va shaam) are not distinguished in Persian. Traditional Persian cooking is done in stages, at times needing hours of preparation and attention. The outcome is a well-balanced mixture of herbs, meat, beans, dairy products, and vegetables. Major staples of Iranian food that are usually eaten with every meal include rice, various herbs (mint, basil, dill, parsley), cheese (feta or Persian panir, derived from goat, sheep, or cow's milk), a variety of flat breads, and some type of meat (usually poultry, beef, lamb, or fish). Stew over rice is by far the most popular dish, and the constitution of these vary by region. Tea (chai) is the drink of choice on nearly every occasion, and is usually served with dried fruit, pastries, or sweets.
You can usually find tea brewing throughout the day in most Iranian homes. Doogh, a yogurt drink, is also quite popular. One of the oldest recipes, which can trace its existence back to the time of the Persian empire, is khoresht-e-fesenjan, consisting of duck or sometimes chicken in a rich pomegranate-and-walnut sauce that yields a distinctive brown color, most often served with white rice.
Using dairy products in Iranian cuisine has an old historical background, as an example, Kashk (dried condensed whey) is used in dishes like Kallajush. It consists of fried onions, dried herbs, and boiled Kashk, eaten with bread (crumbled or in pieces). Foods containing kashk, including kallajush, have been common among tribal peoples and villagers for centuries, especially in wintertime, as it is both easily prepared and affordable for low-income families. Kashk is quite nutritious and contains protein and calcium. Kashk processing was one of the easiest and most effective ways of conserving dairy products in hot climates during pre-modern times.

The four-day event is aimed at promoting healthy food and changing the regular family diet towards tasty but notorious food stuff. The festival also introduces a variety of organic foods, spices and dairy products which are produced in Iran. Organic foods are produced with methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Many researchers used to believe that diseases-such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers were caused by a single gene mutation, they are now generally attributing these conditions to a network of biological dysfunction. And the food we eat is an important factor in that dysfunction, in part because our diets lack the necessary balance of nutrients.

All aboard the Tehran express: Why tourists are paying $40,000 to travel into the heart of the hard-line Muslim state - and the majority are Americans
For years it was a no-go zone, locked in diplomatic disputes with the United States, which it famously decried as 'The Great Satan'.
But now Iran, which sparked one of the 20th Century's tensest diplomatic stand-off by taking 52 Americans hostage, is once more a popular tourist spot.
Tehran, the vibrant capital, is the final destination of a new luxury train trip from Europe to the Middle East, which also takes in Persian ruin sites like Isfahan and Persepolis.
And, according to the Golden Eagle Luxury Trains company, which has just launched its Jewels of Persia service, a substantial chunk of its customers are from the U.S.
The train journey, which costs around $40,000 per passenger, takes a 14-day journey from Budapest, Hungary, through eastern Europe, Turkey and into Iran.
Speaking to NBC News, one customer from Kansas said her family think she is 'absolutely nuts'. She said: 'There is no reason not to come to Iran, don't let what is perceived to keep you home.'

Darband, is one of the most popular local and tourist attractions in Tehran, Iran, located at the foothills of the Alborz Mountains. This video shows a POV walking tour of the activity and sights from the entrance to Darband to the top of the trail.
Darband used to be a village separate from Tehran. Today its a unique suburb with a partially walkable and paved mountain hiking trail, running along a waterway that originates in the mountains. It's full of restaurants, cafes, street vendors and fun. Beautiful and fascinating location where the old and new culture of Iran co-exist.

My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country.
CITIES
The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer.
But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens.
Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens.
The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars.
ANCIENT SITES
Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs.
SCENERY
But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country.
THE PEOPLE
The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go.
If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. I've found the people to be the friendliest and most hospitable I've found anywhere in the world. So check out Wild Frontiers' tours to Iran and discover for yourself this fascinating country.

Come to Dubai, the ancient City of Gold, for your next vacation.
Modernity and antiquity collide in this vibrant city. Shop at the same spice market locals have been visiting for generations, then visit the stores in the Gold Souk, a jewelry-centered traditional marketplace. For a more modern shopping experience, go to the Dubai Mall, home to over 1200 stores, an underwater zoo, and KidZania®, a “city” where children can roleplay various careers.
To soak up some of the legendary Dubai sunshine, simply step outside. Take in the view of the city from the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Continue your Dubai tour by wandering through the exotic buildings and resorts, or visit some of the public beaches. If you’d like to try something a little different and don’t mind paying a small fee, you can also attend local hotel beaches even if you aren’t staying there.
You can’t finish your Dubai sightseeing without a trip into the desert itself. Ride a camel, go sandboarding, or just stand out on the dunes and marvel at the beauty of it all.

There is relief, and some optimism, on the streets of Tehran following Iran's deal with world powers over its nuclear program.
The sanctions relief for Iran within the deal has provided hope that the country's shackled and shrinking economy may be given a new lease of life.
Shopping in Tehran, Nahid Habibi said attitudes had changed overnight: "People now have more motivation to buy gold. There's more confidence for shoppers. I personally feel that it is less likely that I'll lose out if I buy stuff," she said.
Iranian government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nowbakht told reporters there was no doubt the sanctions relief would have a "positive impact on the economy".
International sanctions have cost Iran an estimated 120 billion dollars (around 90 billion euros) in lost revenues since 2010. Its oil exports have also plummeted during that time.

Following an agreement between Tehran and 6 world powers, a growing concern is voiced by four ministers on the country’s state of economy and finances.
The Iranian economy as a whole, especially in the past 5-6 years, has been hurting as a result of some internal and external factors.
It’s clear the unjust regime of trade and banking restrictions placed on the country by some Western states have had a detrimental impact on the Iranian economy; however, it is equally clear that certain misguided, domestic economic policies and particularly some ill-advised banking measures have also played a negative role.
A letter was written by four key members of President Hassan Rouhani’s cabinet addressed to the president himself warning against the likelihood of entering into an economic crisis.
It can be argued that President Hassan Rouhani had been resisting calls for an economic stimulus package for quite some time focusing chiefly on the expedited and expedient resolution of Iran’s political challenges on the international scene, particularly the Iranian nuclear deal talks with the P5+1 group of countries.
But it was only recently, and following the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as agreed between Tehran and the E3+3, when Iran’s head of state finally altered positions on the crucial matter of economic recession and acknowledged what had previously been either downplayed or sidetracked .
The initial 18-month long plan was set to rein in rampant inflation by applying a set of disciplinary measures in the monetary sense. But the existing plan appears to be a departure from the governments’ fundamental stance on employing contradictory monetary policies as a means to drastically reduce inflation in the first quarter of 2017.

The European Union and the US have decided to lift some economic sanctions on Iran after Tehran stopped its production of 20-percent enriched uranium.
EU officials say the decision is part of a landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and the permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany. A statement by the European bloc says the suspension is for a period of six months. Meanwhile, American authorities also say that the US secretary of state has approved Iran's sanctions relief waiver. The White House, however, says the US will continue its QUOTE aggressive enforcement of sanction measures that remain in place against Iran. This comes after it was confirmed that Tehran has carried out its part of the Geneva agreement.

Plummeting oil prices are "hurting" Iran's economy, according to a Tehran-based oil and energy journalist.
But Reza Zandi says the country will cope because of how it's learned to manage under pressure.
The Shahid Tondgooyan Petrochemical Company plant, 15 kilometres south of Tehran, produces oil by-products.
It was inaugurated in 1968, with a second phase coming into operation five years later.
In all, around 250-thousand barrels of crude oil are processed every day.
Iran holds the world's fourth-largest proved crude oil reserves and the world's second-largest natural gas reserves, according to US Energy Information Administration.
But oil prices have plunged by more than 40 percent since June to around 65 US dollars a barrel, placing a severe strain on the country's economy - which is already hobbled by international sanctions imposed over its nuclear programme.
Nasser Babaei is the Managing Director of the Shahid Tondgouyan Petrochemical Company plant.
"Regarding the impact of the declining course of crude oil price, we should see whether the decrease in the price of oil by-products is proportional to the crude price or not. If the crude price goes down with the same level as the international price of petroleum products, it will have no effect on the profit of refineries," he says.
"Nevertheless, if the world prices of by-products decrease faster than the crude price, it will definitely affect the company's profitability or even cause losses. Thus far, the price agreement between oil by-products and crude has had no remarkable impact on our company's performance."
He continues: "If any other country had gone through these massive sanctions like Iran, the consequences on its oil companies would have been devastating.
"We have also been affected but fortunately, due to our domestic capabilities and potentials inside the country and in our company, and given our 50 years of experience as a well-known refining company in the world, we have managed to overcome many sanction-related glitches. We have done that by resorting to creativities and innovations of our own technicians and people and companies from outside."
On Sunday, Saudi Arabia's oil chief dismissed allegations that his kingdom conspired to bring down oil prices in order to harm other countries and told a summit of Arab energy leaders that he was confident the market would stabilise.
It came after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the sharp fall in global prices was the result of "treachery," a remark interpreted as a reference to Saudi Arabia.
Reza Zandi, a Tehran-based oil and energy journalist for Mardom-e Emrouz Daily, says the drop has affected Iran's economy in different ways.
"First, in our current fiscal year's budget (ending on 20 March 2015) the oil target price was defined as 100 dollars per barrel but the present oil price is about 40 dollars less than that target in the second half of this year. When the country's budget is shaken, the whole economy of Iran will be hurt," he says.1
"But this fall is not limited to the crude price and export of our non-oil products will be harmed too. A majority of our non-oil exports are comprised of petrochemical, condensates and petroleum products and plummeting oil prices have also led to a decline in the export of our non-oil products, hurting our economy even more."
But Zandi believes that, in the long term, Iran will not be the worst affected in terms of exports.
"Iran will be the least harmed exporter of crude oil because over the past three years it has learned how to manage itself under pressure and run its economy. It has kind of adjusted itself to the situation," he explains.

Iran is back and open for business. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirms Tehran has fulfilled its commitment in the nuclear deal. The sanctions, which had crippled Iran’s economy for years, have been lifted by the United States, European Union and the United Nations. Iran will now have access to billions of dollars of frozen assets and can sell its oil internationally. Tehran also released five imprisoned Americans while the United States granted clemency to seven Iranians as part of a prisoner swap. Leaders from both countries called the deal a milestone in international diplomacy. The Heat was joined by the following guests who focus on international affairs and Iran: From Tehran is Mohammad Marandi, the Dean of the Faculty of World Studies at the University of Tehran. In the Washington, D.C. studio for CCTV America is Ali Al-Ahmed, the Founder and Director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs. From the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, The Heat was joined by Flynt Leverett.
