China's Plan To Cut Central America In Half
Nicaragua has given a Chinese company the go ahead to build a 173-mile-long canal through the heart of their country. This canal would displace more than a hundred thousand people, destroy nearly 1 million acres of land and potentially pollute one of the country's main water sources. Today on Seeker, we learn about the end of one revolution and the possible birth of another.

Learn and memorize the names and locations of Central American countries (and the larger Caribbean countries) using mnemonics!
Please check out my new education channel with more study skills tips, updated videos, and test help requests at http://www.youtube.com/user/studyskillstips
This video will teach you Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Learn and retain it all in under 5 minutes using easy-to-memorize mnemonics from a high school special education social studies teacher. Memorize by shapes, letter identification, and brief stories to encourage mnemonic understanding.
Memorize European Countries: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdCu2sKhYfk
Memorize South American Countries: http://youtu.be/yYSHaL2uGGE
Memorize Central (North) American Countries: http://youtu.be/LSOLUieKmfk
Memorize Asian Countries: (Coming Soon!)
Memorize Middle Eastern Countries: http://youtu.be/1d--L3rxBu4
Well historically speaking the original Central American countries are only Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, those five countries were actually twice a country named Central America, but since, they have separated, Panama got its independence later along with Belize and are also considered Central American countries due to them being geographically in the Central American isthmus,so everywhere I go the only countries considered Central America are those seven countries.
Countries like Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico etc etc are not considered Central America because they have no historic attachment to that word, those are considered Caribbean countries, and they have always identified with that word historically, Mexico is also not part of Central America, they are in North America, well technically speaking Central America is the southern most region of North America so are North Americans as well, but not regionally.
Countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are the only ones who have the word Central America on their flag's seal because they were all once united as a single country named the Federal Republic of Central America, Belize and Panama are physically part of the Central American geography so Guatemalans, Salvadorians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Costa Ricans consider Panamanians and Belizeans as Central Americans too, but not Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans etc.
Central America is not a continent, and I'm not claiming it to be. Many like to point out that these are North American countries, and they are right. For the sake of memorization I like chunking countries into manageable regions. Just like the "East Coast" is known by residents of the United States of America as the eastern Seaboard of that country, "Central America" is a colloquial term and not an "official" region to many people. The Crew works their way further south into the Baja peninsula. They stop in to meet Ivan "The Ironman" Stewart while some of the guys are feeling a little under the weather before continuing on the adventure. The Southern point of Baja provides a cool place for the guys to get a dive in, but Kurt and Clay are about to have a sketchy situation.

In August of 1857, some 400 travelers left the Vallejo Street Wharf in San Francisco headed from the California Gold Rush back east, first by steamship to Panama, then over the isthmus by railway-- and lastly aboard the S.S. Central America steamship movinged towards New York. Little did these adventurers on board the "Ship of Gold" recognize they were headed towards a watery grave in the Atlantic Ocean.
On that tragic day in September of 1857, the mail steamship S.S. Central America was battered by an intense cyclone off the coastline of the Carolinas. Within a couple of hours, over 500 passengers and a treasure ship filled with Gold sunk to a watery grave where they stayed buried underneath the Atlantic Ocean for the next 150 years

The World Health Organization has declared the Zika Virus a public health emergency.
The virus is usually seen in South and Central America, transmitted through mosquitos. But, travelers have brought the virus to North America, and more locally, Illinois.
“What’s unique about this, is that it had previously not been in this area in the world, it had been predominantly in Africa, so it’s a new virus to South and Central America,” said Dr. Jonathan Pinsky, M.D., Medical Director of Infection Control at Edward Hospital.
Though Zika often causes no symptoms, things to look out for are fever, joint pain, red eyes and a rash. For most people, the virus is harmless, but greater threats are posed for pregnant women because of the threat for birth defects.
“There is now an association with Zika Virus and what they call microcephaly- which is a congenital disorder where the heads are very small,” said Dr. Pinsky.
The CDC is warning women who are thinking about becoming pregnant not to travel to South and Central America. They’re also urging people to protect against mosquito bites.
The American Red Cross is also asking people who have traveled to areas related to the Zika Virus to wait 28 days before donating blood.
Naperville News 17’s Alyssa Bochenek reports.
wn.com/Zika Virus Hits Illinois
Pinsky.

Day 1: San Pedro 3:58
Day 2: Snorkeling 12:30
Day 3: Belize City 22:22, Xunantunich 31:45, Cahal Pech 40:40
Day 4: Entering Guatemala
This was not only my first trip to Central America but my first backpacking trip. This trip was a huge breakthrough in my vision of travel as I have spend the past year evolving my passion and desire for travel. It was suppose to be two plus ones, however my mom didn't make it because of school. So my step father and I happily flew into the beautiful countries of Belize and Guatemala, Two completely different yet diverse lands with amazing people. Although Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America, it is a mixing pot of English, Spanish, Mayan, and coastal Garifuna cultures. Belize is a good mashup of tourist and backpacker all in one.
After flying into Belize Citys airport out the outskirts of the city, we took a cab to the Belize City Water Taxi terminal. From here we took about an hour boat ride to Caye Caulker en route to our island, Ambergris Caye where San Pedro is. San Pedro so far was the most relaxing and most laid back place I have ever been to. WHen they say take it slow, they mean it as time nearly seized to exist and our time there seemed to last longer than we thought, GOOD. We spend half of our second day strolling the beaches, walking around town where all they primarily drive is golf carts, and finally went snorkeling in Shark Alley with sharks, turtles, and fish.
Third day we left the relaxation of the island behind, headed for Belize City and took our first 3 hour chicken bus across Belize for San Ignacio. Although uncomfortable, the bus ride costed us a whopping $4. Once we finally arrived in San Ignacio, we settled in our cozy hotel and took a cab ride over to the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, 15 to 20 minutes from the Guatemala border and the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, outside the city. Considering the distance, we walked from Cahal Pech through the small town of San Ignacio to catch dinner and finally head back to our hotel. Instead of our fourth day cave diving or tubing, we cancelled those plans and headed straight for the Guatemalan border to spend the next five days there before heading back home.
Belize is an amazing country for it's size. It not only offers great tourism but offers foreigners the opportunity to buy land for retirement. As for backpackers, Belize is the most if not one of the more expensive countries in Central America. However, the experience between relaxing on a Belizean beach or hiking up a Mayan pyramid is something that you truly can never forget. For a small English speaking nation in Central America, Belize is Unbelizable. Can you Belize it? :)
Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom glancing at pictures of travel, two years ago I started, last year I left the country for the first time, this trip, I backpacked for the first time. Like all my videos, they represent me as I put my heart into all of my footage. I not only enjoy my time and explore but I hope to give others the opportunity to see how things are done beyond the travel guides and books. This is travel in the eyes of Anthony Perez! Hope you enjoy and happy travels!

Legacy - The Origins of Civilization - Episode 5: Central America, the Burden of Time (Documentary)
At best, this search for the continuing legacies of past civilizations can help explain how different cultures have developed over time, show how the past greatly influences all our lives, and cultivate a respect for other cultures. At worst, it can send a message that these civilizations have remained virtually unchanged through time, unlike the West, and cultivate a false view of other peoples as less "modern." The negative impact of the assumption that other cultures are not as modern as the West surfaces when Westerners make judgements, business deals, and policy decisions based on this assumption. Although Legacy aspires to the former objective, it often ends up fulfilling the latter. For example, the following statements by writer and presenter Michael Wood exemplify how the language Westerners often use to talk about non-Western peoples relegates them to a space and time outside of a Western view of the universe: "Two conceptions of civilization have fought for the soul of the peoples of the Americas, one foreign and recent, that of the West, the other ancient and native;" "For over 2000 years, China has been sustained by ideas virtually unchanged since the Bronze Age." Throughout the series, comments like the ones above and the relative absence of images of people creating and using modern technology make it difficult for viewers to see the integral roles non-Western peoples occupy in the present.
EPISODE 5: Central America, the Burden of Time
This episode explores how indigenous peoples of Central America have "hung on with great tenacity" and resisted spiritual conquest by retaining old languages and practices despite their physical conquest by the Spanish and consumer society over the past 500 years. Wood describes them as "stubbornly collective" and "stoical," but "possessed of an inner strength that would allow them to bear any burden, even one as heavy as the last 500 years." Wood laments and condemns the conquest of the Americas, but his emphasis on Central America's continuity with its pre-Columbian past also seems to serve to alleviate Western guilt.
Wood's survey of the legacy of Mesoamerican civilizations discusses the Popul Vuh, the Mayan creation myth, explores the Mayan ruins at Teotihuacan, Tikal and Copan and the Aztec temple of Quetzalcoatl in Mexico City, and observes present-day shamans in order to demonstrate the continuity between the Mesoamerican past and present, the Mayans all-consuming obsession with time, and the war-like character of the Aztecs. Although he mentions other aspects of Aztec civilization, he spends most of the time discussing their often-sensationalized practices of human sacrifice.

Travel video about destination Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is a fascinating country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, a natural paradise between the Caribbean and the Pacific.Located at more than a thousand metres above sea level, San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, not only boasts an idyllic location in the heart of Central America’s coffee country, but also an enviable climate. The extent to which Costa Rica joins with European tradition can be seen in the Teatro Nacional. The coffee barons, to whom the glorious development of San José is owed, created taxes for the export of coffee beans and thus funded the construction of the magnificent building. In a fertile mountain valley at the foot of a volcano, is Turrialba, a town that radiates a serene calm but once was an important station on the route of the Jungle Train from San José to the Atlantic coast. The crater of the Poas Volcano is surrounded by the dense green of a rainforest and overlooks the north western Meseta Central. Although it is one of the country’s most active volcanoes, it is the most visited, as visitors can go by car almost to the edge of the crater. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram is Costa Rica’s most popular tourist attraction, a ride on an open gondola through the jungle. A journey of discovery amid a canopy of trees, hovering at treetop level through the solitude of nature. Fascinating nature, joie de vivre and colonial history are omnipresent on this land bridge between North and South America, Costa Rica is surely one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
