Plot: This story is set in the "in-between" time of a girl's life, when she is no longer a child and not yet a woman. We open with our heroine, Maeve, putting on her new snow white bra, and stepping out into the world as a young woman. She has an obsession with breasts and bras and can't help but stare at other girls and women, even the head nun doesn't escape her gaze. Otherwise, her world revolves around her three friends, Ruth, Claire and Orla, who are more experienced in the ways of the world. They wear bras already (except Claire the feminist) and they've all had boyfriends. The new bra is a start but they really hope Maeve can find a fella, even offering kissing lessons to prepare her. What no one expects, least of all Maeve, is that she should snare the local sixteen-year old heartthrob. Maeve is so smitten with him that she lets her friends down when they need her the most. In trouble with her friends and in school, she gets dumped by the heartthrob when she sneaks into the local dance with him and he leaves with another girl. Her parents find out and she ends up in trouble at home, where she takes on extra domestic duties. She does the laundry and even her bra has lost its former brilliance. Maeve realizes what she has lost. Her friends rally round for her 14th birthday, Maeve returns to the fold a little older and a little wiser. Winner of the Tiernan McBride Award for Scriptwriting in 2002.

She argued that most difficulties women experienced in private were rooted in political inequality, so personal problems could spur women to political action in public life. Today, consciousness-raising groups are less common. Yet the idea that ‘the personal is political’ has survived, albeit giving way to an increasing fractious identity politics. The bizarre story of Rachel Dolezal, a white woman presenting herself as a mixed-race leader in the NAACP, has raised sharp questions about how we think about who a person is. More broadly, there has been an explosion of different groups vying with one another f...
https://www.facebook.com/invokeDEMOCRACY/ Recorded at the launch of Invoke Democracy Now, Rich Mix, 14th July 2016. Britain has voted to leave the European Union. However, in the weeks that have followed the result there have been many calling for the outcome to be challenged or overturned. A legal case has been launched seeking to force a parliamentary vote prior to invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. Politicians have been declaring that Brexit can be prevented, portraying the vote as a moment of 'madness' triggered by the lies of the official leave campaign. Tens of thousands have marched on parliament in support of the EU and demanding that we remain despite the vote. It is clear that the result has left many people with a sense of loss and disorientation. Others see the resu...

Claire Fox is cynical of the 'happiness agenda'. She wonders why those on the left - such as Polly Toynbee - routinely attack capitalism when things like "retail therapy" can make people happy. The York Union motion was: "This House would make enhancing people's happiness and wellbeing a central priority throughout Britain today." Claire Fox was the fourth panellist to address The York Union at this debate. Filmed and edited by Harry Scoffin.
