CANBERRA — The revolving door of Australia's prime ministership has whirred into action again. With the unpopular Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott dropped before he could even stand for reelection, Malcolm Turnbull becomes the country's fifth leader in just over five years.
Abbott served just 726 days as Prime Minister — fewer than both of his Labor Party predecessors Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard — surely a painful humiliation for a man who had for his political career lusted after the office. Ironic, too, for a party which made hay from the instability of the Rudd-Gillard years.
A former journalist, then barrister, then entrepreneur who made his fortune during Australia's dot-com boom, Turnbull is known for his ego and his reputation as a Renaissance man. He is a rare classical liberal in a party overrun with conservatives and idealogues and is significantly more popular with the electorate than his predecessor, though he has powerful opponents within the party's right. Abbott, meanwhile, is an archconservative and political attack dog derided by critics as visionless and is deeply unpopular with the electorate.
By ditching a prime minister who had presided over farcical budgets, poorly-received policies, troubling debt and who had no answer to the end of the Asian-led commodities boom, the Liberal party is pinning its hopes on Turnbull to claw back trust before the next election.

Malcolm Turnbull becomes Australia's new prime minister after ousting Tony Abbott . Malcolm Turnbull has been elected Liberal party leader with 54 votes to Tony Abbott’s 44. Abbott was challenged for the prime ministership by the centrist MP for Wentworth on Monday afternoon. Government whip Scott Buchholz announced the news, adding that Julie Bishop was successful in her bid for the position of deputy prime minister with 70 votes, while Kevin Andrews took home 30 votes.
Former communications minister beats incumbent leader by 54 votes to 44 and promises respectful, slogan-free leadership style
Malcolm Turnbull is set to become Australia’s new prime minister after beating Tony Abbott by 54 votes to 44 in a snap Liberal party ballot and promising the country a new, respectful, slogan-free leadership style.
The Liberal party whip Scott Buchholz announced the results to waiting journalists about 30 minutes after the meeting of parliamentarians began. There was one informal vote.
Julie Bishop remains deputy Liberal leader and a ministerial shakeup looms after the leadership upheaval.
Long-simmering leadership tensions exploded on Monday when Turnbull declared a challenge, arguing Abbott had shown himself unable to make the case for policy change or turn around the Coalition’s political fortunes.
Abbott pleaded with his party not to repeat the Labor party’s mistakes, and his backers immediately mobilised a counteroffensive, seeking to build momentum during the five hours between Turnbull’s declaration and the ballot.
They insisted electorate offices were being “swamped” with calls from Liberal party members aghast that the party would consider removing a sitting prime minister and providing a parade of ministers to urge the party to stick with the current prime minister.
Cabinet ministers who publicly declared their support for Abbott before the party room meeting included Eric Abetz, Kevin Andrews, Joe Hockey, Mathias Cormann and Peter Dutton.
The social services minister, Scott Morrison, who had been regarded as a potential treasurer in a Turnbull government, said in a statement that he was “voting for the prime minister and not standing in any ballots”, scotching earlier claims that he could be a contender for deputy. But he did not appear in public to argue against a change.
The decision comes two years after Abbott led the Coalition to an election victory and seven months after Abbott’s “near death experience” in the last attempted leadership spill. The Coalition has been lagging behind Labor in major published opinion polls since last year, when the government’s first budget carried unpopular measures to cut health and education spending, deregulate university fees and introduce a Medicare co-payment.
In February, Abbott pleaded with his colleagues for more time to turn around the government’s fortunes when he faced a leadership spill motion initiated by backbench MPs. On that occasion, there was no declared challenger, but 39 Liberals still voted to declare the leadership positions vacant, while 61 backed Abbott.
Turnbull visited the prime minister shortly after question time on Monday and asked him to call a Liberal party room meeting for a leadership ballot to be held.
The deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop had already told Abbott – in a pre-question time meeting – that he should stand aside. At that point Abbott is understood to have been strongly resisting the idea of a challenge.
Turnbull resigned from cabinet and sought support from colleagues by pitching himself as the right person to lead Australia at a time of major economic challenges. He accused the prime minister of being unable to provide the necessary economic leadership, urged colleagues to support a new “style of leadership that respects the people’s intelligence” instead of sloganeering, and promised to restore traditional cabinet government.
Abbott had declared that he would fight the leadership challenge because Australia needed “strong and stable government” and the prime ministership was “not a prize or a plaything to be demanded”.
“I will be a candidate and I expect to win,” Abbott said before the meeting.
Turnbull is a former leader of the Liberal party who was ousted by Abbott in 2009 following a damaging split within the Coalition over climate change policy.

Malcolm Turnbull is sworn in as Australia’s sixth prime minister in eight years after defeating Tony Abbott in a ruling party leadership contest.
The 60-year-old former investment banker beat Abbott in a late-night ballot of the ruling Liberal Party lawmakers. The ballot was held amid growing concerns that the government was heading for defeat in next year’s elections, after trailing in opinion polls. The vote ended Abbott’s leadership after just two years in power. Abbott angered the public with huge spending cuts in his first budget in May 2014. His administration has also been marked by numerous leaks to media about policies and leadership rumors. Meanwhile, Abbott has hit out at the rapid change of governments in Australia, saying that a revolving door for leaders isn't good for the country.
Our correspondent in Sydney Hamid Farajollahi says public dissatisfaction with the economic situation contributed to the recent political changes in Australia. Let’s take a listen.

Cairns is a regional city in the far north of Queensland, Australia, founded 1876. The city was named after William Wellington Cairns, then-current Governor of Queensland. It was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield, but experienced a decline when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas. It later developed into a railhead and major port for exporting sugar cane, gold and other metals, minerals and agricultural products from surrounding coastal areas and the Atherton Tableland region. As of June 2012, the population is approximately 153,075.

Purpose built as Australia’s capital city, Canberra is a 3-hour drive from both the snowy mountains and the beautiful beaches of New South Wales. It is a city which honors Australia’s past and shapes its future.
With an expansive bush beauty, a relaxed attitude and colorful events, Canberra is far more than a political capital. Designed for a young nation that was just finding its feet, this city is home to many of the country's most important stories; stories that have come to define what it means to be Australian.
At the heart of Canberra’s creation story is Lake Burley Griffin. A long-standing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne meant that neither one could be the nation’s capital. Instead, in 1911, the government launched an international design competition seeking a master plan for a brand new city.
The victor, Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin, won with a garden city design focused on a man-made lake which fits perfectly within the landscape.
When, the nation’s Governor General stood in a dusty paddock in 1913 and announced the name of the new capital, he told the nation that the city had, lying before it, a splendid destiny.
Over 100 years later, that destiny has been fulfilled in a city that preserves the great chapters of Australia’s history and continues to write the future pages of the nation’s story.

http://www.expedia.com/Adelaide-and-vicinity.d6051330.Destination-Travel-Guides
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and is situated close to the Great Southern Ocean.
It is a compact beachside city that is full of churches, stone buildings and beautiful parklands.
This picturesque city is unusual amongst Australian cities in that it was founded by free settlers, not convicts. Those early founders put a lot of passion into creating a better life for themselves even though they were many thousands of miles from home.
Because of that history, Adelaide has a unique sense of refinement and beauty.
One of the most popular places to visit is Victoria Square which is right in the heart of the city. From here, it is easy to wander along the North Terrace District and admire the graceful buildings and museums which echo with stories from the past.
At the South Australian Museum, visitors can learn about the rich cultures that were in the area before the Europeans arrived.
Another great place to visit is the Art Gallery of South Australia where visitors can enjoy the extensive collections of Australian and International Art.
Don’t miss the legendary Adelaide Oval which many claim to be one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.
Adelaide is also well known as a gateway to the famous Barossa and Clair Valleys which are a food and wine lovers paradise.
Many of the early settlers to this area were German and they brought with them grapes from their homeland. The area is now well-known for producing outstanding shiraz and reisling.
While you are in the area, stop at any of the many wineries for a wine tasting or to enjoy a meal using fine local produce.
Adelaide is an old world city that attracts visitors for its elegance and romance.

A modern city, Perth is the gem of Australia’s west coast and the capital of Western Australia. This friendly metropolis boasts pristine beaches, clear water, and plenty of coastline – not to mention an abundance of nature and mineral resources.
Start your day of Perth sightseeing with a walk through Kings Park, which is larger than New York’s Central Park and home to the Western Australia Botanic Garden. More than 3,000 species of Western Australia’s plant life, including vibrant flowers, are on display here. Most of the park consists of bushland, which means lots of wildlife and quite a few walking trails.
After a morning of reflection in the park, head over to the Swan Bell Tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Don’t forget your camera! You will notice the diverse nature of Perth’s architecture from this vantage point, including the modern glass structures and London-inspired Tudor buildings.
Perth tours are never complete without a ferry ride to Rottnest Island, affectionately called “Rotto” by the locals. This getaway is rife with opportunities to snorkel in the Indian Ocean, see wildlife such as seals and birds, and travel across more than 31 miles of cycle ways on a rented bicycle.
Once your feet are back on mainland Western Australia, visit one of the jewels, and ultimately what draws much of the Perth tourism: Swan Valley. This region has a landscape peppered with vineyards, no surprise given that growing grapes has been a long-standing tradition in Swan Valley. Following a short (or leisurely paced) day trip to Swan Valley, return to Perth and head to Hillarys Boat Harbour for a sunset dinner.

Australia does away with knights and dames
Knights and dames are “not appropriate” in a modern Australian honours system and will be scrapped from the Order of Australia, the prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has announced.

Australia deportation laws criticised by NZ prime minister
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has said Australia's deportation laws are undermining their relationship.
He said he had had a "blunt" chat about the issue with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop at the UN.

Britain's Prince Charles Wednesday launches a potentially awkward tour Down Under, where New Zealand's premier is pushing to drop the Union Jack from the flag and Australia's new leader is a staunch republican.
Charles and wife Camilla arrive in Wellington to start the 12-day trip in which the heir to the throne will visit a dozen different cities and towns across the two countries including New Plymouth, Dunedin, Auckland, Sydney, Perth and Albany.
The prince's office said the tour had a strong emphasis on honouring the military, with this year marking the centenary of the Anzac landings in Gallipoli, Turkey, during World War I that helped forge the identities of both Australia and New Zealand.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has also sparked a debate on national symbols by calling a referendum on changing the flag, which features a Union Jack in the corner.
Key argues it is time to ditch the symbol of New Zealand's colonial past and later this month Kiwis will begin voting in a postal ballot to pick a potential alternative.
While Charles will likely avoid any controversy on the subject, he may take comfort from the fact that opinion polls predict the existing flag will be retained when the issue is put to a final vote in March.
If Charles becomes king in the future, as expected, he will become monarch of both Australia and New Zealand, which were once part of the British Empire but are now independent.
The British Crown's power in Australia and New Zealand is seen as largely symbolic, but while Queen Elizabeth II is hugely popular in both countries the monarchy is still viewed by some as a colonial relic.
While Key may support changing the flag, he remains an ardent monarchist, unlike Charles' host on the second leg of his tour, Australia's new prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull.
Turnbull, who recently ousted royal supporter Tony Abbott in a party coup, is a former head of the Australian Republican Movement and campaigned passionately, but unsuccessfully, to ditch the monarchy in a 1999 referendum on the issue.
"The republic will come back," Turnbull vowed at the time.
Since becoming prime minister, he has said that another republican referendum in Australia is unlikely while the Queen is still on the throne -- meaning the next one would likely be after Charles has assumed the crown.
Turnbull showed his republican fires still burn on Monday when he removed knights and dames from the national honours system, saying such titles were "not appropriate" in modern times.
Other republic-supporting Australian prime ministers have courted controversy by bending protocol in meetings with the British monarchy, with Julia Gillard criticised for failing to curtsy to the Queen in Canberra in 2011.
Former leader Paul Keating was dubbed the "Lizard of Oz" by the British press when he touched the Queen's back while guiding her through a crowd in the nation's capital in 1992.

Knights and dames are “not appropriate” in a modern Australian honours system and will be scrapped from the Order of Australia, the prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has announced.
Speaking in Sydney on Monday, Turnbull said that the honours system was “a long way from being the most important issue in Australia today”.
“Knights and dames are titles that are really anachronistic, out of date, not appropriate, in 2015,” he said.

Malcolm Turnbull speaks to reporters about the announcement his government has scrapped the titles of ‘knight’ and ‘dame’ from the Australian honours system
Turnbull said earlier that the Queen had agreed to the government’s recommendation to remove knights and dames.
“Awards in the Order of Australia are an important way of honouring the achievements and service of many Australians, including those unsung heroes who might not otherwise be recognised outside their local communities,” Turnbull’s office said in a statement released on Monday.
Turnbull’s predecessor, Tony Abbott, reintroduced knighthoods and damehoods in March 2014, and then on Australia Day 2015 awarded Prince Philip a knighthood. He was criticised for reinstating the honours, even by members on his own side of politics, who labelled them anachronistic.
Abbott, a staunch monarchist, admitted the decision to reinstate the honours system, including the appointment of Prince Philip, was made unilaterally as a “captain’s pick”.

The new prime minister said he had consulted colleagues before scrapping the system.
“The cabinet recently considered the Order of Australia, in this its 40th anniversary year, and agreed that knights and dames are not appropriate in our modern honours system,” the statement said. “This change will not affect existing knights and dames of the order.”
Abbott awarded five titles in the brief time that the honours were available. The first went to outgoing governor general Quentin Bryce and her successor, Peter Cosgrove. Marie Bashir, the former New South Wales governor, also received a damehood.
On Australia Day this year, the then prime minister announced two more appointments, to retired chief of the defence force, Angus Houston, and controversially, Prince Philip.
Many were upset that Abbott had given a knighthood to a foreigner, after originally implying it would be reserved for Australians.
“This special recognition may be extended to Australians of extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement and merit,” Abbott said in March last year, when reintroducing the system that was scrapped in 1989.
Abbott defended the appointment, saying Prince Philip had been a “great servant of Australia”.

Selwyn Manning and Peter Godfrey deliver their weekly Across The Ditch bulletin. This week: NZ's Prime Minister John Key says Australia's Incest deportee should stay in Australia + Rugby World Cup Update - Recorded live on 22/10/15.
ITEM ONE:
Prime Minister John Key has challenged Australian immigration law saying a women who is about to be deported to New Zealand should stay in Australia and is Australia's problem.
The woman is identified as Betty Colt, who allegedly was member of an incest community.
News reports in New Zealand allege Colt was part of a "40-strong group that lived in squalid conditions near Canberra.
In 2012, authorities took away 12 children and testing revealed that only one had parents that were not related".
The New Zealand Herald reported yesterday (Wednesday) that the children, who were under-fed, hardly went to school and lacked basic skills such as how to shower and clean their teeth". The children later spoke of suffering sexual abuse.
Key told the New Zealand Herald: "I think there is quite a solid argument to say that while she was born in New Zealand, she has lived her life there, and she has been a product of the Australian system," Mr Key said. (ref. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=280&objectid;=11532323 )
The outburst came just days after John Key entertained Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Auckland.
During their first bilateral leaders' meeting, Key failed to pressure Turnbull into addressing the immigration issue where approximately 200 New Zealand citizens are currently detained, some at Christmas Island, pending the outcome of appeals to their deportation orders.
One month ago Key issued a staunch message to Australia's foreign minister Julie Bishop while attending the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
Then, Key said New Zealand and Australia had a special relationship, founded on our shared war experiences as ANZACs.
He insisted that Kiwis be treated differently to those of other nationalities.
But last weekend, after a week with pressure building for Key to get a result on this issue, his message to Turnbull was watered down and impotent.
Both politicians exited their meeting looking like their friendship had been consummated rather than challenged. And again, Key failed to deliver or broker a resolution to the festering deportation issue.

Malcolm Turnbull will be in New Zealand late this week for his first prime minister to prime minister meeting with his Kiwi counterpart John Key.
John Key is being pressured to seek agreement from Turnbull to stop New Zealanders from being detained in detention centres in Australia and Christmas Island.
According to Government figures around 200 Kiwis are currently detained on deportation orders, their special visas revoked because they may have cumulatively served more than 12 months in prison over their lifetimes.
John Key raised the issue with Australia's foreign minister Julie Bishop in New York early this month. At the time he said his message to Bishop was blunt and that he would raise concerns directly with Turnbull.
But now Key appears less focussed. He faced pressure in Parliament on Tuesday with the Labour Party demanding he place... concerns for the detained Kiwis ... at the top of his list, of issues to discuss.
This issue has descended into a political stoush, with Key calling his rivals Australia's "lap dogs".
In reply, Key said to Labour: "It is just frankly a little bit rich getting lectured by the leader of the opposition when they were the government that signed New Zealanders up to worse rates, and like a lap dog accepted it for seven years and did nothing about it."
Malcolm Turnbull and his wife will dine with Key and his wife on Friday evening before formal Trans-Tasman leadership talks on Saturday.

New Zealand's Rugby World Cup pundits are ranking the Wallabies ahead of the All Blacks to win the Rugby World Cup final.
And it could yet be a Australia V New Zealand final scheduled to play at Twickenham in London on October 31.
For that to happen, Australia needs to beat Scotland in the quarter finals on Sunday, and either Ireland or Argentina in the semis.
To get into the finals the All Blacks need to beat France in Cardiff on Saturday, and either South Africa or Wales in the semis.
The All Blacks easy pool games have left pundits unconvinced they are in top form, while Australia's dominating game in the 'pool of death' has placed it at the top of the New Zealand Herald's ranking table. It states it is impossible to drop Australia down from the number one spot even though Australia eased off the peddle in the Wallabies V Wales game (15 - 6) last weekend.
It's getting exciting up there.

When Malcolm Turnbull wrested the Australian prime ministership from Tony Abbott in September, he immediately pitched himself as a new breed of leader with a penchant for startups, although his track record as communications minister left some in doubt. "Ben Bucknell is about to risk $2000 of his parents’ hard-earned money," he joked, before taking the opportunity to expand on his thoughts regarding Australian support for new business and startups.

When Malcolm Turnbull wrested the Australian prime ministership from Tony Abbott in September, he immediately pitched himself as a new breed of leader with a penchant for startups, although his track record as communications minister left some in doubt. He took a step towards proving his dedication to the Australian tech scene Wednesday, showing up at an event in Sydney launching the fintech mobile app OnMarket, which aims to allow the average investor easier access to initial public offerings (IPOs). New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has said Australia's deportation laws are undermining their relationship.
He said he had had a "blunt" chat about the issue with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop at the UN.
The laws, introduced last year, mean any non-Australian criminal imprisoned for a year or more can have their permit to live in Australia revoked.
Mr Key said some New Zealanders now facing deportation had spent their entire lives in Australia.
About 300 New Zealanders are being held in Australia or have been deported since the new laws came into force, Radio New Zealand reported.
Mr Key said many of those detained went to Australia "when they were very, very, young".
"It's a little bit like the Australians saying, 'well, we're going to pick and choose; we're going to keep the ones we like but we're going to send back the ones we don't like'."
Mr Key said that his country's special relationship with Australia was being "challenged" by the new rules and that he expected New Zealanders to be treated differently from other countries.
"What they might do with other countries is up to them," he said. "But I think when it comes to New Zealanders, the threshold's currently set in the wrong place."
Ms Bishop said there was "no closer relationship than Australia and New Zealand" and agreed the issue needed further discussion.
Concerns have also been raised over the death of New Zealander Junior Togatuki, 23, in the Goulburn Correctional Centre, a super-maximum prison in New South Wales.
Togatuki had reportedly written to Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton pleading against his impending deportation.
"I'll lose hope in life if I go to New Zealand," Togatuki, who had lived in Australia since the age of four, reportedly wrote.

Australia’s new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull unveiled Sunday his first cabinet in which his supporters and female figures were given positions following the ouster of Tony Abbott.
The reshuffle includes Australia’s first female defense minister, Marise Payne, who replaced the conservative Kevin Andrews, according to broadcaster ABC.
The posts of cabinet secretary and assistant cabinet secretary will be assumed by Turnbull’s Liberal Party supporters Arthur Sinodinos and Scott Ryan, respectively.
Scott Morrison, who became social services minister in Dec. 2014 after serving as minister for immigration and border protection, has replaced Joe Hockey as treasurer.
Meanwhile, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has maintained his post despite his backing of Abbott in the leadership challenge.
Other figures remaining in their cabinet roles are Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Environment minister Greg Hunt, Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss and Health Minister Sussan.
Alongside Payne, other women promoted in the reshuffle include Michaelia Cash, now employment minister, and Kelly O'Dwyer, the new assistant treasurer and small business minister.
Turnbull was officially sworn in as Australia’s 29th prime minister Tuesday after beating Abbott 54 votes to 44 votes in the closed-door leadership vote Monday.
Turnbull told reporters Monday afternoon that he had proposed the vote as it had become clear that Abbott "has not been capable of providing the economic leadership our nation needs".
Poll after poll had shown "the people have made up their mind about Mr. Abbott's leadership," Turnbull -- the party's ex-communications minister -- said.
Abbott had headed off a leadership spill in February.
