Outdoor Research, manufacturers of the Crocodile gaiter, shows you how to properly use your gaiters. Phil Ershler and Erica Engle, owner and guide for International Mountain Guides, shows you how to use your gaiters.
Video Transcription:
Hi, I'm Phil Ershler and I'm joined today with Erica Engle, one of our top senior guides at International Mountain Guides, and we're here to talk a little bit today about how we're going to fit a pair of gaiters for the Alpine environment. I don't know about you, Erica, but when I think about gaiters, I think in terms of crocodiles. The two words for me have always been synonymous, so how do we start with these things?
Let's start by opening the gaiter fully, and Erica puts the gaiter on from the back, working forward, and you notice that the OR label is on the outside of the gaiter. This puts the buckle on the outside; it also opens the velcro flap to the outside. This way we don't easily catch anything when we're crampling , so we'll start at the toe of the boot, working our way up, laying the two velcro together nice and neat so that they stay securely fastened.
Down at the bottom of the gaiter now, you'll notice a little tab that overlaps the velcro flap. It helps again, just to keep that flap into place, and you'll also notice the hook down at the end of the flap. Erica grabs a couple of the laces on her boot and puts that into position.
Then, at the top of the gaiter, we have one more strap that just secures the gaiter at the top, helps keep snow out of the gaiter, not too tight, just a comfortable fit. Then, we go down to the bottom of the gaiter and we grab the instep strap, run it under the instep of the boot and buckle it securely. Again, this helps to mold that gaiter around the contour of the boot, keeping snow from entering the gaiter.
We thank you for joining us today for this tech tip about how to fit a gaiter and if you need any more questions answered, don't hesitate to contact Outdoor Research at outdoorresearch.com or International Mountain Guides at mountainguides.com

How to protect your legs from snakebites, desert spinifex grass, bush thorns while hiking and we talk about waterproof snow hiking gaiters. Depending on which season or terrain I'm hiking in, depends on which gaiters I use; personally I have 3 different pairs of gaiters.
8oz GAITERS (Autumn & Spring)
My standard bush walking gaiters are 8oz canvas and undoubtedly the most useful, I use them when hiking in the Australian bush in Autumn and Spring. Also I'd recommend 8oz canvas gaiters for jungle trekking (both dry or rainy season). The name of this product is Quagmire Gaiters.
22oz SNAKE GAITERS (Summer, Late Spring, Early Autumn)
My 22oz canvas gaiters are my all round favourite for maximum protection. I took a pair of 8oz canvas gaiters and had a gear alterations company add an extra layer of 14oz canvas, making these gaiters almost 100% resistant to Australian snakebite! :-)
We do a lot of off trail hiking in the warmest months in Australia. It's during these warmer months that Australian Snakes come out of hibernation and can be extremely dangerous. Whilst summer bush bashing in Australia (off trail hiking) I only feel comfortable if I have my 22oz gaiters on. Fortunately most fatal snakebites in Australia occur below the knee by people who have accidently stepped on a snake; even thick pants or sturdy boots could save your life in this situation. Some experts will say that the moment a snake's fangs touch anything of resistance their venom immediately starts to emerge; therefore any layer of fabric is better than nothing cause if you're lucky it'll be on the outside of your clothes :-)
WATERPROOF GAITERS (Winter)
Waterproof goretex gaiters are the right choice for snow hiking. But I would only recommend using waterproof gaiters if you already have waterproof shoes as well.
Gaiters stop stones getting inside your shoes, if worn properly your shoe laces wont come undone as the gaiters cover that area, they also protect your legs from leeches, ants and other annoying critters. Experienced bushwalkers know that hiking without them can be a nightmare LOL

This week we'll be reviewing the Verglas Gaiters from Outdoor Research.
The Verglas Gaiters are really durable to help protect your legs from thorns and biars.
They close in front with large strips of velcro.
There is a lace hook up front and a tough instep strap to hold the Gaiters securely in place making sure your shoes don't pick up any loose rock, leaves, twigs or dirt.
Getting that stuff stuck in your boot can be really irritating when you're hiking.
Also, the straps up top help adjust the fit.
Best of all, the Verglas Gaiters are waterproof, so walking through tall wet grass will not
leave your legs soaked. However, the Gaiter doesn't breathe that well. So, after a long hike you may find your legs soaked with sweat rather than dew.
So lets review. The Verglas Gaiters offer your legs protection in several ways.
They protect you from briars and branches.
They deflect dirt, rocks and twigs.
They're waterproof 1:21
They resist confetti 1:25
However, they will not protect you from any of the following!
bullets 1:33
snake bites 1:38
harsh words 1:47
hockey puck 1:51
And that's our review of the Verglas Gaiter by Outdoor Research.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a pair of MLD Light Snow Gaiters to use in conjunction with my ZPacks Rain Kilt for those colder, wet hikes (and maybe even on some warmer ones too...) In this video I just talk about the gaiters, and the Vectrawire from Lawson Kline to use as the instep cord. I am hoping that this cord last a long while since it is said to be very cut & abrasion resistant!
