BMX bike legend Dave Mirra -- who once had the record for the most X Games medals has died of an apparent suicide has learned.
Cops say the 41 year old's body was found in his truck in Greenville, North Carolina Thursday with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
We're told he had been in the area visiting with friends.
Mirra leaves a wife and two kids.
Officials tell cops are investigating the death.
Earlier Thursday, a photo of Mirra and his wife together appeared on Dave's Instagram account with the caption, "My Rock! Thank god."

BMX bike legend Dave Mirra — who once had the record for the most X Games medals — has died of an apparent suicide … TMZ Sports has learned.
Cops say the 41-year-old’s body was found in his truck in Greenville, North Carolina Thursday with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
We’re told he had been in the area visiting with friends.
Mirra leaves a wife and two kids.
Earlier Thursday, a photo of Mirra and his wife together appeared on Dave’s Instagram account with the caption, “My Rock! Thank god.”
I will always remember the hours of time my brother and I put into his BMX game. He was a true legend who help pave the wave for extreme sports today.

Greenville Police confirmed dead
At approximately 4pm today, Greenville Police responded to the 200 block of Pinewood Road for an apparent suicide.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Dave Mirra, 41, of Greenville, sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident.
Considered an icon in the pro-BMX world, Mirra, was instrumental in bringing the sport to the City of Greenville, which now is home to more than 20 professional BMX riders. The record-holding athlete is survived by his wife and two children.
“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon,” said City of Greenville Mayor, Allen Thomas.
The Greenville Police Department will be handling the death investigation.
The family of Dave Mirra would appreciate privacy during this very difficult time.

The first part of this video was filmed on New Years so Anthony Panza and myself decided to try and ride high security spots in Midtown, NYC with hopes that there wouldn’t be much security. We got lucky at some spots and other spots we dealt with the usual security and concerned citizens. The second part of the video was filmed a day before a huge blizzard was supposed to hit. It was around 20 degrees but we got in some last minute street riding before the snow came.
Filmed mostly on a GoPro 3+ with a Zhiyun Tech Rider-M gimbal.

I decided to make a pit-stop on my way down to Florida in North Carolina to visit my friend Brian Fox. Brian is absolutely crazy on his bike, 1080s, double backflips, EVERYTHING. His ankle was actually bothering him pretty badly when I was there, but he toughed it out to film this video with me, and I'm glad he did! Brian is the man.
Regarding the situation with the police, I just wanted to point out once again that we were clearly just pointing out what we felt was unjust at the skatepark in what we considered an appropriate manner. We don't encourage you to talk back to police or to give them a hard time at all. We were grateful that the lady was nice to us and did not give us a hard time, some cops would have handcuffed us. It is ridiculous that parks like this exist and exclude an entire sport, for the matter of personal issues. I was told that the people who built this park (and many other skate-only parks) purposely put in their contracts that bikes void the warranty, so towns naturally don't allow them. I personally don't believe that plastic pegs and tires do any more damage than trucks and wheel bolts hitting the ground, but the towns don't listen.
To avoid situations like this, be sure to be INVOLVED if your town is ever getting a skatepark built. If BMX riders help fund and plan the park, there is less chance of being excluded. All too often we get lazy and let the skaters go through all the legal actions of getting a park built and are surprised when they exclude us. Just some food for thought, I'd be more than happy to hear what you guys think in the comments.

These awesome kids really just reminded me that it shouldn't matter what we do at the park as long as we're having fun and respecting each other. Nicole and I hit up Port Orange skatepark and then grab some lunch before heading to Jericho Skatepark of Daytona. Jericho is known for having a lot of scooters because it's like the one place that no one really picks on them. The cool thing is the staff at Jericho and the people that go there really take the time to help the younger kids with park etiquette - so they honestly get in the way less than your new bmx rider. I think if we treat the kids on scooters with a bit more respect they'll be more likely to view BMX in a positive light and actually consider switching over at some point. I'm not saying either sport is better than the other, but I really do think if we all get along it will make everyone's lives easier.

Bicycle motocross or BMX refers to the sport in which the main goal is extreme racing on bicycles in motocross style on tracks with inline start and expressive obstacles, and it is also the term that refers to the bicycle itself that is designed for dirt and motocross cycling.
BMX started in the early 1970s when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in southern California, drawing inspiration from the motocross superstars of the time. The size and availability of the Schwinn Sting-Ray and other wheelie bikes made them the natural bike of choice, since they were easily customized for better handling and performance. BMX racing was a phenomenon by the mid-1970s. Children were racing standard road bikes off-road, around purpose-built tracks in California. The 1972 motorcycle racing documentary On Any Sunday is generally credited with inspiring the movement nationally in the US; its opening scene shows kids riding their Sting-Rays off-road. By the middle of that decade the sport achieved critical mass, and manufacturers began creating bicycles designed especially for the sport.

Greenville Police confirmed dead
At approximately 4pm today, Greenville Police responded to the 200 block of Pinewood Road for an apparent suicide.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Dave Mirra, 41, of Greenville, sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident.
Considered an icon in the pro-BMX world, Mirra, was instrumental in bringing the sport to the City of Greenville, which now is home to more than 20 professional BMX riders. The record-holding athlete is survived by his wife and two children.
“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon,” said City of Greenville Mayor, Allen Thomas.
The Greenville Police Department will be handling the death investigation.
The family of Dave Mirra would appreciate privacy during this very difficult time.

The first part of this video was filmed on New Years so Anthony Panza and myself decided to try and ride high security spots in Midtown, NYC with hopes that there wouldn’t be much security. We got lucky at some spots and other spots we dealt with the usual security and concerned citizens. The second part of the video was filmed a day before a huge blizzard was supposed to hit. It was around 20 degrees but we got in some last minute street riding before the snow came.

I decided to make a pit-stop on my way down to Florida in North Carolina to visit my friend Brian Fox. Brian is absolutely crazy on his bike, 1080s, double backflips, EVERYTHING. His ankle was actually bothering him pretty badly when I was there, but he toughed it out to film this video with me, and I'm glad he did! Brian is the man.
Regarding the situation with the police, I just wanted to point out once again that we were clearly just pointing out what we felt was unjust at the skatepark in what we considered an appropriate manner. We don't encourage you to talk back to police or to give them a hard time at all. We were grateful that the lady was nice to us and did not give us a hard time, some cops would have handcuffed us. It is ridiculous that parks like this exist and exclude an entire sport, for the matter of personal issues. I was told that the people who built this park (and many other skate-only parks) purposely put in their contracts that bikes void the warranty, so towns naturally don't allow them. I personally don't believe that plastic pegs and tires do any more damage than trucks and wheel bolts hitting the ground, but the towns don't listen.
To avoid situations like this, be sure to be INVOLVED if your town is ever getting a skatepark built. If BMX riders help fund and plan the park, there is less chance of being excluded. All too often we get lazy and let the skaters go through all the legal actions of getting a park built and are surprised when they exclude us. Just some food for thought, I'd be more than happy to hear what you guys think in the comments.

Nicole and I hit up Port Orange skatepark and then grab some lunch before heading to Jericho Skatepark of Daytona. Jericho is known for having a lot of scooters because it's like the one place that no one really picks on them. The cool thing is the staff at Jericho and the people that go there really take the time to help the younger kids with park etiquette - so they honestly get in the way less than your new bmx rider. I think if we treat the kids on scooters with a bit more respect they'll be more likely to view BMX in a positive light and actually consider switching over at some point. I'm not saying either sport is better than the other, but I really do think if we all get along it will make everyone's lives easier.

These awesome kids really just reminded me that it shouldn't matter what we do at the park as long as we're having fun and respecting each other. Nicole and I hit up Port Orange skatepark and then grab some lunch before heading to Jericho Skatepark of Daytona. Jericho is known for having a lot of scooters because it's like the one place that no one really picks on them. The cool thing is the staff at Jericho and the people that go there really take the time to help the younger kids with park etiquette - so they honestly get in the way less than your new bmx rider. I think if we treat the kids on scooters with a bit more respect they'll be more likely to view BMX in a positive light and actually consider switching over at some point. I'm not saying either sport is better than the other, but I really do think if we all get along it will make everyone's lives easier.

How could a little road-trip turn into such an awesome experience? World famous JoyRide 150, roaming around downtown Toronto, and meeting HUNDREDS of fans definitely had something to do with it!

I don't even know where to begin with this description... But I should probably start with a backstory. You guys have been asking me to come out to Canada (specifically JoyRide 150) for YEARS now. It was on my list of "must-dos" this summer, but I was having a hard time finding someone to go with. None of my friends had passports, and none of them wanted to go out of their way to get one. I wound up waiting until Nicole came down and taking the 8 hour road trip up there with her. I was kind-of worried that a BMX trip would be boring for her, but it was literally the best time (IMO) that we've ever had together.
We stopped at JoyRide 150, a bike-only skatepark in Toronto filled with everything from box jumps to cross country MTB tracks. There were literally 150+ kids that showed up (we checked with the front desk) to hang out and ride with us. I can't get over how crazy it was to ride with that many people and hang out with all our fans that know so much about us and our videos. Literally every single person was insanely nice, especially JoyRide staff, and Matt O'Brien who helped film all day!
The "chill" day riding around downtown Toronto was definitely my favorite. Just exploring a new place on bikes and seeing city-culture is one of the most fun things ever. I didn't have my helmet on because I wasn't really planning on riding (I hurt my foot at joyride), but when we bumped into some riders I couldn't help but get some tricks in (you guys know how it is). Huge shoutout to the awesome Goonsquad for helping me film! I'm really bummed my GoPro started acting up with the audio, but hopefully you guys don't mind.
On our way back home we stopped at A1 Cycle in Brantford, ON for a quick meetup/ride with some more fans. Definitely was surprised to see so many people come out in such a little town! The Canadian BMX scene is amazingly strong and on top of the amount of riders, their positive attitudes are really what will move our sport forward. We hung out and made our way over to their local park followed up by some free pizza at the shop! Huge shoutout to A1 Cycle, Zak Longhurst for filming, and his mom for the Starbucks!

To sum up what might be one of the longest YouTube descriptions ever I'd like to say thank you. Thank you to every single one of you guys that came out to meet up with us, took pictures, had us sign stuff, or even gave us something. It's insane to be treated this way when all we really do is go out and film ourselves having fun on bikes. Thank you to all of you who wanted to come, couldn't come, or even those of you who are watching this video. I just can't thank everyone enough, all the shops, parks, and people that helped film, but ESPECIALLY Nicole. It takes one very special girl to take an international BMX road trip and enjoy it yet. She loves you guys as much as I do, and it's not surprising that she signed just as many (if not more) autographs than I did at parks.
As a closing note, just remember BMX isn't all about being the best. Look at me, look at Bert, even look at Nicole. We aren't by any means the best riders in BMX. We just have fun and try to present that in the format of entertaining videos. There is absolutely NO REASON every single one of you guys can't be doing the same thing. Just remember to keep it fun and the views will come :)

I wound up waiting until Nicole came down and taking the 8 hour road trip up there with her. I was kind-of worried that a BMX trip would be boring for her, but it was literally the best time (IMO) that we've ever had together.
We stopped at JoyRide 150, a bike-only skatepark in Toronto filled with everything from box jumps to cross country MTB tracks. There were literally 150+ kids that showed up (we checked with the front desk) to hang out and ride with us. I can't get over how crazy it was to ride with that many people and hang out with all our fans that know so much about us and our videos. Literally every single person was insanely nice, especially JoyRide staff, and Matt O'Brien who helped film all day!
The "chill" day riding around downtown Toronto was definitely my favorite. Just exploring a new place on bikes and seeing city-culture is one of the most fun things ever. I didn't have my helmet on because I wasn't really planning on riding (I hurt my foot at joyride), but when we bumped into some riders I couldn't help but get some tricks in (you guys know how it is). Huge shoutout to the awesome Goonsquad for helping me film! I'm really bummed my GoPro started acting up with the audio, but hopefully you guys don't mind.
On our way back home we stopped at A1 Cycle in Brantford, ON for a quick meetup/ride with some more fans. Definitely was surprised to see so many people come out in such a little town! The Canadian BMX scene is amazingly strong and on top of the amount of riders, their positive attitudes are really what will move our sport forward. We hung out and made our way over to their local park followed up by some free pizza at the shop! Huge shoutout to A1 Cycle, Zak Longhurst for filming, and his mom for the Starbucks!

To sum up what might be one of the longest YouTube descriptions ever I'd like to say thank you. Thank you to every single one of you guys that came out to meet up with us, took pictures, had us sign stuff, or even gave us something. It's insane to be treated this way when all we really do is go out and film ourselves having fun on bikes. Thank you to all of you who wanted to come, couldn't come, or even those of you who are watching this video. I just can't thank everyone enough, all the shops, parks, and people that helped film, but ESPECIALLY Nicole. It takes one very special girl to take an international BMX road trip and enjoy it yet. She loves you guys as much as I do, and it's not surprising that she signed just as many (if not more) autographs than I did at parks.
As a closing note, just remember BMX isn't all about being the best. Look at me, look at Bert, even look at Nicole. We aren't by any means the best riders in BMX. We just have fun and try to present that in the format of entertaining videos. There is absolutely NO REASON every single one of you guys can't be doing the same thing. Just remember to keep it fun and the views will come :)
