The corpus callosum (Latin: tough body), also known as the colossal commissure, is a wide, flat bundle of neural fibers beneath the cortex in the eutherian brain at the longitudinal fissure. It connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres and facilitates interhemispheric communication. It is the largest white matter structure in the brain, consisting of 200–250 million contralateral axonal projections.
The posterior portion of the corpus callosum is called the splenium; the anterior is called the genu (or "knee"); between the two is the truncus, or "body", of the corpus callosum. The part between the body and the splenium is often markedly thinned and thus referred to as the "isthmus". The rostrum is the part of the corpus callosum that projects posteriorly and inferiorly from the anteriormost genu, as can be seen on the sagittal image of the brain displayed on the right. The rostrum is so named for its resemblance to a bird's beak.
Thinner axons in the genu connect the prefrontal cortex between the two halves of the brain. Thicker axons in the midbody of the corpus callosum and in the splenium interconnect areas of the premotor and supplementary motor regions and motor cortex, with proportionally more corpus dedicated to supplementary motor regions. The posterior body of the corpus communicates somatosensory information between the two halves of the parietal lobe and visual center at the occipital lobe.

Will you become smarter if you play the piano? Does piano study increase the capability of your brain? The question is whether there is a correlation between mastering a musical instrument and one’s brain increasing in potential.
It seems that there exists a correlation between early musical training and how strong the connection is between neurons in the brain; and even development of new routes. Studies have shown that there is a strong relationship between music training and long-term development in certain areas of the brain.
Gottfried Schlaug, Herman Steinmetz and others at the University of Dusseldorf had an article about their studies published in Discover magazine in 1994. A comparison of an MRI of the brains of 27 right-handed men who play classical piano or string instruments to 27 right-handed men who did not play any musical instruments was done by this group.
It is interesting to note that they found that in the musicians’ planum temporale – a brain structure associated with auditory processing – was larger in the left hemisphere and smaller in the right than was found in non musicians. There was also a thicker nerve-fiber tract between the hemispheres in the musicians. The differences were particularly pronounced in musicians who started learning before reaching the age of seven.
The study of music and piano playing can also encourage growth of the corpus callosum, which is a link between the two sides of the brain, according to Shlaug. The corpus callosum was 10-15% thicker in musicians who started their training before the age of seven, than in non-musicians. At that time, Schlaug and other researchers theorized that a corpus callosum of greater size could possibly result in improved motor control by increasing the communication speed between the hemispheres.
Given that, studies by Dartmouth professor Petr Janata in print 2002 in Science, has affirmed that music stimulated both sides of the brain and the areas containing memory and emotion more than any other stimuli.

Environ, 2% des enfants de moins de 7 ans sont porteurs d’un strabisme (Williams et al., 2008) entraînant une perturbation de leur système visuel.
Dans un premier temps, nous avons étudié les mouvements oculaires pendant la lecture d’un texte et pendant la poursuite d’une cible chez des enfants strabiques et comparé ces résultats à des enfants non strabiques du même âge. Une étude a aussi porté sur des enfants ayant une agénésie totale du corps calleux. Dans un second temps, nous avons comparé l’équilibre postural chez des enfants strabiques en condition de simple et de double tâche, puis nous avons examiné le rôle des informations proprioceptives sur le contrôle postural chez ces enfants.
Nous émettons l’hypothèse selon laquelle le déficit visuel des enfants strabiques est à l’origine d’un mauvais développement des voies de contrôle du système oculomoteur ainsi qu’à l’origine d’un développement des voies de contrôle du système postural modifié, s’appuyant sur d’autres systèmes sensoriels pour compenser leur déficit visuel. Nous pensons aussi que le corps calleux « visuel » contribue au bon développement des mouvements oculaires.
Quatre études publiées dans des revues internationales ont été réalisées pour tester ces hypothèses.
L’ensemble de ces travaux a été réalisé afin d’apporter une meilleure compréhension des bases neurales et des interactions entre oculomotricité et contrôle postural chez les enfants strabiques. Ceci permet d’apporter des éléments fondés à l’aide au diagnostic, à la prise en charge médicale mais aussi chirurgical de ces enfants strabiques.
