In many workplaces throughout the First World, including but not limited to the United States and New Zealand, a "mental health day" is where an employee does not come to work and takes a sick day for reasons other than physical illness. Some people may consider a mental health day to be when someone simply does not feel like coming in to work, but the most accurate use of this term is related to true mental illness rather than a desire to skip work.
Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and other mental illnesses can cause severe impairment on one's ability to function in the workplace or other roles. In addition, workplace and other stressors can exacerbate episodes of depression, mania, anxiety, or other illnesses. Left unchecked, mental health may continue to decline and can lead to serious morbidity. However, due to the lack of objective criteria and cultural perceptions that one can easily change mental health status, there may not be a perceived need for time off of work for mental health reasons.

We have produced the short video with help from service user Mie Wall and Trust psychologist Dr Graham Spratt. AV540A Fighting in North East Nigeria has forced millions to flee their homes. Many have seen their relatives and friends killed, and the destruction of their communities. Young men, whose relatives have died as a result of the violence, are often left to support themselves and their remaining family. The psychological consequences of such extreme situations, compounded by the struggle to provide for themselves and their families, have left many young men feeling stigmatized, rejected and suffering from mental health issues. Nigerian Red Cross volunteers are trained and supported so they can run counselling support groups for these young men, as well as other vulnerable people.

Let's go
The lights are on but there is no one home
Yeah, I'm the type of guy that shouldn't be left alone
They say just one more night of observation
There's nothing like a permanent vacation
I break down like you want me to
But I will not give control to you
Sniff like a pound of glue
Forget all the things you'll put me through
Dial up the residue
Now I'm nuts, just like a blue cashew
I go psycho, psycho
Psycho, psycho
And all I want is to go home just for a bit
But these padded rooms are the shit
Whoa, I'm happy in my mental health
Whoa, these conversations with myself
Whoa, they say that only time will tell
Whatever I'm happy in my mental health
I'm happy in my mental health
1, 2, 1, 2, 3, go
Hey, meet a friend of mine, now where'd he go?
He's probably sitting there but you would never know
They say just one more shock, try not to resist
They say lie down and bite on this
You let the shocks away
But the voices in my head are here to stay
No bullshit tests today
I get more drugs than the DEA
One day they'll do a play
They take your shoelaces away
We go psycho, psycho
Psycho, psycho
And all I want is to go home just for a bit
But these padded rooms are the shit
Whoa, I'm happy in my mental health
Whoa, these conversations with myself
Whoa, they say that only time will tell
Whatever I'm happy in my mental health
Straitjacket, bad habit
'Cause I live for the havoc
This static, illmatic
Double dose is just like magic
Straight jacket, let's have it
You pump up all my panic
Welcome, this is my life
A padded room up in the attic
And all I want is to go home just for a bit
But these padded rooms are the shit
Whoa, I'm happy in my mental health
Whoa, these conversations with myself
Whoa, they say that only time will tell
Whatever I'm happy in my mental health
Psycho, psycho
I'm happy in my mental health
Psycho, psycho
I'm happy in my mental health
Psycho, psycho
I'm happy in my mental health
Psycho, psycho
