Rachel McKendry is Professor of Biomedicine and Nanotechnology at the London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL. When you're sick, you go to the doctor and the doctor treats your disease. They've been trained to do that pretty well. But what do you do when you're healthy? Well, you probably just go about your day. You've got a busy life, we all do. And you can't afford to be sick.
So what if I told you there are people out there whose job it is to make sure you stay healthy? And what if I told you these are people you've probably never met? Well, these folks are in a field called public health. And their mission is to promote health and prevent disease. Doctors, on the other hand, are on a mission to treat disease.
So let's say this person is diagnosed with diabetes. Now it's the doctor's job to treat her patient. She'll prescribe medications and insulin to help him meet his target blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, he'll have to keep going back for prescriptions for the rest of his life because there is no cure. To make matters worse, he will have to deal with issues like long-term health complications, health insurance concerns, and even social discrimination. And don't forget his medical bill, almost fourteen thousand dollars a year. His priorities in life are now secondary to his disease. Sure, modern medicine has come a long way. But is this the best way to address disease?
Well, let's take a step back and focus on preventing disease. According to public health researchers, simple things like a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent the onset of diabetes. So public health folks put their health promotion and disease prevention mission to work. They lower the prices of healthier foods and beverages in school cafeterias to promote a healthy diet. And they build community sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes to promote exercise. And at a fraction of the cost of disease treatment, public health makes it really easy for people to stay healthy in the first place. No diabetes means no long-term health complications, no health insurance concerns, and no social discrimination. Just health promotion and disease prevention.
And the crazy thing is, it works. Really well. Because people you've never met, people you've never even talked to, devote their time to make sure you stay healthy.

Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals" (1920, C.E.A. Winslow). It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). The dimensions of health can encompass "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity", as defined by the United Nations' World Health Organization. Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental health, community health, behavioral health, health economics, public policy and occupational health are other important subfields.
The focus of public health intervention is to improve health and quality of life through the prevention and treatment of disease and other physical and mental health conditions, through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. Promotion of hand washing and breastfeeding, delivery of vaccinations, and distribution of condoms to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases are examples of common public health measures.

Loretta DiPietro received her BS and MS degrees in Health Education from Southern Connecticut State University and her MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Yale University. As one of the first graduate students trained in Exercise Epidemiology, she then completed post-doctoral training at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and, as an Epidemiologic Intelligence Officer (EIS), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Professor DiPietro's research interests center around the role of physical activity and successful aging. She has been awarded several grants from the National Institute on Aging and her current work strives to bridge the gaps between population-based public health and the clinical and physiological domains of exercise science. Professor DiPietro served on the faculty at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and the Yale University School of Medicine for 15 years prior to arriving at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in 2008. Currently, she is the chair of the Department of Exercise Science, which is one of very few such departments in the world that is housed and completely integrated within a school of public health. Dr. DiPietro also has recently been name the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, which has a large international readership. Loretta DiPietro received her BS and MS degrees in Health Education from Southern Connecticut State University and her MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Yale University. Unfortunately, he'll have to keep going back for prescriptions for the rest of his life because there is no cure. To make matters worse, he will have to deal with issues like long-term health complications, health insurance concerns, and even social discrimination. And don't forget his medical bill, almost fourteen thousand dollars a year. His priorities in life are now secondary to his disease. Sure, modern medicine has come a long way. But is this the best way to address disease?
Well, let's take a step back and focus on preventing disease. According to public health researchers, simple things like a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent the onset of diabetes. So public health folks put their health promotion and disease prevention mission to work. They lower the prices of healthier foods and beverages in school cafeterias to promote a healthy diet. And they build community sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes to promote exercise. And at a fraction of the cost of disease treatment, public health makes it really easy for people to stay healthy in the first place. No diabetes means no long-term health complications, no health insurance concerns, and no social discrimination. Just health promotion and disease prevention.
And the crazy thing is, it works. Really well. Because people you've never met, people you've never even talked to, devote their time to make sure you stay healthy.

Loretta DiPietro received her BS and MS degrees in Health Education from Southern Connecticut State University and her MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Yale University. As one of the first graduate students trained in Exercise Epidemiology, she then completed post-doctoral training at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and, as an Epidemiologic Intelligence Officer (EIS), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Professor DiPietro's research interests center around the role of physical activity and successful aging. She has been awarded several grants from the National Institute on Aging and her current work strives to bridge the gaps between population-based public health and the clinical and physiological domains of exercise science. Professor DiPietro served on the faculty at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and the Yale University School of Medicine for 15 years prior to arriving at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in 2008. Currently, she is the chair of the Department of Exercise Science, which is one of very few such departments in the world that is housed and completely integrated within a school of public health. Dr. DiPietro also has recently been name the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, which has a large international readership.

A recent graduate from FSU, Evan works full time with Who We Play For—a non-profit he founded while in college in memory of his life-long teammate, Rafe, who collapsed and died at soccer practice due to the leading cause of death in student athletes, sudden cardiac arrest. Who We Play For’s fight is to create a national movement to protect the hearts of our youth by providing affordable heart screenings and increasing awareness. Having recently merged with another non-profit, in total Who We Play For has screened over 45,000 young hearts, identifying 60 life threatening heart conditions.

Women who conceived babies using in vitro fertilization or assisted reproductive technology (ART) were two to three times as likely as women who did not use ART to suffer serious health complications during delivery, according to a new study led by School of Public Health researchers. The study in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology used Massachusetts birth and hospitalization data from 2004 to 2010 to compare health outcomes during delivery for women who had conceived using ART with those of women who were fertile or sub-fertile and did not use ART. -

ZACK FORD, ThinkProgress: 33 states have laws that criminalize HIV. These laws, most of which date back to the height of the AIDS epidemic, mean that someone with HIV can be sent to jail for having any sexual contact without disclosing their status.
A recent study from the University of Minnesota found that most men who have sex with men didn’t even know if their state had a law.
Basically, men are having condomless anal sex at the same rate, whether there’s a law or not.However, those who believed their states criminalize HIV actually engaged in more risky behavior.
And that’s not all...
Two earlier studies found that these laws disincentivize people from getting tested in order to avoid liability. That makes it even harder to fight the epidemic.
It’s not just that the laws don’t work. They’re totally outdated. For example, we now know that treatment significantly reduces the risk of transmitting the virus.
These laws don’t have anything to do with promoting public health -- we’re just convicting people living with HIV for having a sex life. Isn’t that something?

Suicide is preventable and is a significant public health issue. In 2013, there were over 41,000 suicides in the United States – an average of 113 each day. Each suicide takes a substantial toll on individuals, families and communities. The medical costs and lost wages associated with suicide are estimated to be $51 billion per year. These numbers underestimate the severity of the problem. In 2013, over 494,000 people were treated in US emergency departments for self-inflected injuries. The public health workforce is charged with the task of promoting and protecting the health of all populations. As such, public health workers encounter ethical issues in many of their regular activities, assignments and decisions. Often, government assistance, oversight or intervention is involved to facilitate this process and ensure that ethical issues are carefully considered.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define public health ethics as a "systematic process to clarify, prioritize and justify possible courses of public health action based on ethical principles, values and beliefs of stakeholders, and scientific and other information." This broadcast will examine the definition of public health ethics, explore how ethical issues in public health may differ from other ethical issues, and review several current issues in public health ethics.

Jennifer completed her PhD at Simon Fraser University, finishing her degree in four years without ever having to put in late nights at the lab, and while simultaneously pursuing her interest in media activities! She was also awarded the Governor Generals Gold Medal as the top doctoral student

Medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer has dedicated his life to improving health care for the world’s poorest people. He chairs the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine and is a founding director of Partners In Health (PIH), an international non-profit organization that since 1987 has provided direct health care services and undertaken research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty. He also is professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Farmer began his lifelong commitment to Haiti in 1983 while still a student, working with dispossessed farmers in Haiti’s Central Plateau. He served there for ten years as medical director of a charity hospital, L’Hôpital Bon Sauveur. With PIH over the past twenty-six years, Dr. Farmer has led colleagues working in twelve sites throughout Haiti and twelve additional countries around the globe. For more than a decade, the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine has integrated research and teaching programs with PIH service activities, establishing direct feedbacks between clinical interventions and biosocial analyses. The work has become a model for health care for poor communities worldwide and provides the basis for developing a science of global health delivery implementation. Dr. Farmer holds an M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. In addition to his leadership roles at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Partners In Health, he is the United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti.

After 4 million years of evolution that yielded an increase of only 11 years, in less than a century human life spans were extended by 40 years. That's a major reason real economic output is eight times greater than in the 19th century. Medical research and public health were the primary drivers of that accomplishment--through sanitation, vaccines, reduced infant mortality, food and water security, auto and workplace safety, better nutrition and tobacco reduction, to name a few advances. Will the next century bring a world where cancer, heart disease, hypertension, obesity, malaria, dementia and many other health scourges have been eliminated or controlled? How can we get there, and if we do, can we spread the benefits more equally worldwide? Who is leading the charge? This open-ended discussion will address what changes we can -- and should -- expect in the near and distant future, and what those advances mean for our health and prosperity.
