"Ruling behind the curtain" (垂簾聽政) is how Empress Dowager Cixi rules over the Chinese empire. She seized power in 1861 and has since acted as the regent for several infant emperors. During an audience, the emperor sits on the throne, behind which Cixi sits, with a curtain separating them. Cixi is behind the curtain because a female cannot get involved in politics in a patriarchy like China. Despite that, Cixi is the de facto ruler of the country; the emperor is just a puppet. And now, Guangxu the boy emperor has grown up. He wants to rule the nation on his own. Conflicts between the emperor and the regent therefore begin.
In this clip, Cixi examines a concubine of the emperor who interferes with government affairs, because the law prohibits females from politics. Ironically, Cixi herself is ruling the country, which could also be considered a political activity.
This clip is from a 2010 historical and political drama, "The Firmament of the Pleiades" (蒼穹之昴). The drama stars Japanese actress Yuko Tanaka (田中裕子) as Empress Dowager Cixi.

Imperial Consort Zhen, better known as the Pearl Concubine was the secondary consort and favorite of GuangXu, the tragic 10th Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. She was a very progressive and independent woman who supported the emperor in his innovations, reform efforts and study of languages. For all of this she was opposed by the powerful Empress Dowager Cixi who is commonly held to have had her killed. Her life and untimely death have made her a romantic figure of the late Qing Dynasty period.

Concubinage is the state of a woman or man in an ongoing, usually matrimonially oriented, relationship with somebody to whom they cannot be married, often because of a difference in social status or economic condition.
A concubine is generally a woman in an ongoing, marriage-like relationship with a man with whom she cannot be married for a specific reason. It may be because she is of lower social rank than the man (including slave status) or because the man is already married. Generally, only men of high economic and social status have concubines. Many historical rulers maintained concubines as well as wives.
Historically, concubinage was frequently voluntary (by the woman and/or her family's arrangement), as it provided a measure of economic security for the woman involved.
Under Roman law, Roman culture under the Empire came to tolerate concubinage so long as the relation was durable and exclusive; for the jurists, concubinage was an honourable de facto situation.
When having no legal status but being recognized, or defined in law, as in ancient China, concubinage was akin, although inferior, to marriage. The children of a concubine were recognized as legal offspring of the father; their inheritance rights may have been inferior to younger children of a marriage, or they may have received a smaller inheritance. Men frequently used concubines to bear heirs when he and his wife were unable to produce sons.

The Concubine is a deathcore band from Tabernacle Township, New Jersey. Formed in 2003, they have since toured with Knife the Glitter, Veil of Maya, Left to Vanish and other similar bands, and have been hailed on metal blogs as an up-and-coming metal band.
The group made their recording debut with a 2004 EP, Maestro, If You Will. Their first full-length album, Abaddon, received mixed reviews.
According to the band's Myspace, The Concubine has disbanded, citing "other interests and careers" as the reason for the break-up.

The Pearl Concubine
Imperial Consort Zhen, better known as the Pearl Concubine was the secondary consort and favorite of GuangXu, the tragic 10th Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. She was a very progressive and independent woman who supported the emperor in his innovations, reform efforts and study of languages. For all of this she was opposed by the powerful Empress Dowager Cixi who is commonly held to have had her killed. Her life and untimely death have made her a romantic figure of the late Qing Dynasty period.

Imperial Consort Zhen, better known as the Pearl Concubine was the secondary consort and favorite of GuangXu, the tragic 10th Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. She was a very progressive and independent woman who supported the emperor in his innovations, reform efforts and study of languages. For all of this she was opposed by the powerful Empress Dowager Cixi who is commonly held to have had her killed. Her life and untimely death have made her a romantic figure of the late Qing Dynasty period.
