TED is a non-partisan, nonpolitical organization and we understand the Chinese authorities concern at anything which might provoke social unrest. But for anyone who believes in the power of ideas, of human imagination, it is heartbreaking to see one of the world's great artists shackled in this way. We will be tracking developments carefully. Here is the film.

Ai Weiwei’s (艾未未) Sunflower Seeds is made up of millions of small works, each apparently identical, but actually unique. However realistic they may seem, these life-sized sunflower seed husks are in fact intricately hand-crafted in porcelain.
Each seed has been individually sculpted and painted by specialists working in small-scale workshops in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen. Far from being industrially produced, they are the effort of hundreds of skilled hands. Poured into the interior of the Turbine Hall’s vast industrial space, the 100 million seeds form a seemingly infinite landscape.
Porcelain is almost synonymous with China and, to make this work, Ai Weiwei has manipulated traditional methods of crafting what has historically been one of China’s most prized exports. Sunflower Seeds invites us to look more closely at the ‘Made in China’ phenomenon and the geo-politics of cultural and economic exchange today.
Sunflower Seeds was on display at Tate Modern from 12 October 2010 – 2 May 2011.

Dumbass (Explicit Lyrics)
When you're ready to strike, he mumbles about non-violence.
When you pinch his ear, he says it's no cure for diarrhea.
You say you're a mother-fucker, he claims he's invincible.
You say you're a mother-fucker, he claims he's invincible.
Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life's invincible.
Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life's invincible.
Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass! Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass!
Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass! Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass!
Lalalalala, lalalalala Lalalalala, lalalalala
Lalalalala, lalalalala Lalalalala, lalalalala
Stand on the frontline like a dumbass, in a country that puts out like a hooker.
The field's full of fuckers, dumbasses are everywhere.

Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life's invincible.

(CNN) -- Leading Chinese activist and artist Ai Weiwei declared that China's government has no humanity -- and that the Communist Party is trying to silence anyone who disagrees with it.
"They crack down on everybody who has different opinions -- not even different opinions, just different attitudes," Ai told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.
"Simply to have different opinions can cost (dissidents) their life; they can be put in jail, can be silenced, and can be disappeared," he said.
Ai is no stranger to controversy or danger. He helped design the iconic Bird's Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but then called for a boycott of the games because in his opinion China was using them as propaganda.
He also faced a barrage of official criticism in 2008 when he assembled activists to collect the names of thousands of unidentified students who were killed in the massive Sichuan earthquake. He also slammed local governments for allowing the construction of shoddy schools that collapsed.
Ai has paid a heavy price for his dissent. He says he was beaten in a hotel room by Chinese police and later needed emergency brain surgery for injuries he suffered in the assault.
Even as Ai spoke to CNN, Google appeared to be moving closer to leaving China in a showdown over Internet censorship and hacking from inside the communist nation.

Popular Western social networking sites are already banned from China. "There's no Twitter in China, there's no YouTube in China, now we'll have no Google in China," Ai said.
"They shut down three of my blogs in seven minutes, so you can see how fearful (Chinese officials are) about somebody speaking out their mind."
He said 12 million people were reading his blog posts until they were closed.
Ai though said there are new technologies that can help people overcome what he called the Great Firewall, but it's available to only a small number of people.
"Now we have about 50,000 people -- writers, editors, journalists -- who can get the information. And they can get whatever we say in the West," he added.
"It has a great effect on the government. Young people see what we are talking about on Twitter and blogs (and) they would speak the words to different kinds of media. So that can have great potential, if millions of people read them."
Ai said he believes new technology is the only way to bring change to China and he's convinced it will happen one day.

Ai said he believes new technology is the only way to bring change to China and he's convinced it will happen one day.

'A moment of poetry' Ai Weiwei calls this interview made through Skype by Olafur Eliasson. 'I cannot talk on the internet or talk to foreigners and that is why doing it in this way is so important', Ai Weiwei says.
Ai Weiwei (b 1957) was not allowed by the Chinese authorities to attend his exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in November 2011. Danish artist Olafur Eliasson interviewed Ai Weiwei at the opening through Skype asking him questions about his conception of a public space, poetry and how he would like resourceful people to use their voice. Eliasson also addresses the fact that Ai Weiwei might experience difficulties because of his taking part in this interview. 'There will always be difficulties, that's why answering of the questions become more meaningful', Ai Weiwei says. He also quotes his father, who was a famous poet, saying that a human being's desire for liberty and freedom is stronger than the wind and the air and nothing can stop them.

"In the case, recently, of Ai WeiWei and Pussy Riot...what differentiates this new form of political art? I realized that they have a punk aesthetic," says James Panero, Managing Editor of New Criterion, to Reason TV's Kennedy.
The protest art created by the Chinese artist and the all-female Russian perforamnce art collective bear the idioms of punk as well as it's defiant anti-authoritarian streak, according to Panero. He believes their art is "having a real effect" as the "conscience of reform" against the authoritarian governments under which they live.
About 4.33 minutes.

The Philadelphia native spent 3 years in China documenting the controversial artist. Ai Weiwei is China's most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic. Against a backdrop of strict censorship and an unresponsive legal system, Ai expresses himself and organizes people through art and social media. In response, Chinese authorities have shut down his blog, beat him up, bulldozed his newly built studio, and held him in secret detention.
AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY is the inside story of a dissident for the digital age who inspires global audiences and blurs the boundaries of art and politics. First-time director Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China. Her detailed portrait provides a nuanced exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compelling public figures.
