Lontano arcipelago nel golfo del Bengala, più vicino alla Birmania e alla Thailandia che non alla madrepatria India, che tempi e burocrazia indiana contribuiscono ad allontanare ancor di più. La maggior parte delle isole sono disabitate, le spiagge cosparse di rifiuti trascinati dal mare: reti di pescatori, bottiglie di plastica, alberi abbattuti dai monsoni, ecc., ecc. Le spiagge sono un perpetuo movimento di granchi e paguri. Definirle uno degli ultimi, veri, paradisi tropicali... dipende dai punti di vista. C'è chi ne apprezza l'incontaminazione umana chi invece verrebbe volentieri l'intervento di quest'ultimo per ripulirne le spiagge! Sulle poche isole abitate e visitabili grazie al "Restricted Area Permit" (nelle altre vivono tribù indigene) la civiltà è quella colorata e chiassosa dell'India di fine secolo scorso. La modernità ha posato una striscia d'asfalto che termina brutalmente sulla sabbia di una spiaggia o contro l'impenetrabile muraglia della giungla. Lungo la colata di cemento dove non passano due auto contemporaneamente sfrecciano i tuk-tuk, auto a clacson spiegato, qualche scalcinato autobus senza finestre e porte; animali vagano indisturbati: polli, pecore, le sacre mucche; un'infinità di negozietti di ogni tipo e genere sorgono ai margini della strada e un'infinità di sari colorati camminano ai suoi bordi.

The Andaman Islands form an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal between India, to the west, and Myanmar, to the north and east. Most are part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India, while a small number in the north of the archipelago, including the Coco Islands, belong to Myanmar.
Birds
Endemic or near endemic birds include
Spilornis elgini, a serpent-eagle
Rallina canningi, a crake (endemic; data-deficient per IUCN 2000)
Columba palumboides, a wood-pigeon
Macropygia rufipennis, a cuckoo dove
Centropus andamanensis, a subspecies of brown coucal (endemic)
Otus balli, the scops owl
Ninox affinis, a hawk-owl
Aceros narcondami, the Narcondam hornbill
Dryocopus hodgei, a woodpecker
Dicrurus andamanensis, a drongo
Dendrocitta bayleyi, a treepie
Sturnus erythropygius, the white-headed starling
Collocalia esculenta, the glossy swiftlet
Aerodramus fuciphagus, the edible-nest swiftlet
The islands' many caves, such as those at Chalis Ek are nesting grounds for the edible-nest swiftlet, whose nests are prized in China for bird's nest soup.
The islands also have a number of endemic reptiles, toads and frogs, such as the South Andaman krait (Bungarus andamanensis) and Andaman water monitor (Varanus salvator andamanensis).
Reptiles & Amphibians
There is a sanctuary 45 miles from Havelock Island for saltwater crocodiles. Over the past 25 years there have been 24 crocodile attacks with four fatalities, including the death of American tourist Lauren Failla. The government has been criticized for failing to inform tourists of the crocodile sanctuary and danger, while simultaneously promoting tourism. Crocodiles are not only found within the sanctuary, but throughout the island chain in varying densities. They are habitat restricted, so the population is stable but not large. Populations occur throughout available mangrove habitat on all major islands, including a few creeks on Havelock. The species uses the ocean as a means of travel between different rivers and estuaries, thus they are not as commonly observed in open ocean. It is best to avoid swimming near mangrove areas or the mouths of creeks; swimming in the open ocean should be safe, but it is best to have a spotter around.
Government
Port Blair is the chief community on the islands, and the administrative centre of the Union Territory. The Andaman Islands form a single administrative district within the Union Territory, the Andaman district (the Nicobar Islands were separated and established as the new Nicobar district in 1974).

Port Blair (Hindi: पोर्ट ब्लेयर 
pronunciation (help·info), Tamil: போர்ட் ப்ளேர், Bengali: পোর্ট ব্লেয়ার, ) is the largest town and a municipal council in Andaman district in the Andaman Islands and the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India. It lies on the east coast of South Andaman Island and is the main entry point to the islands.
Port Blair is the headquarters for the Indian district of South Andaman, and the local administrative sub-division (tehsil), which is also called Port Blair. It is home to several museums and a major base for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. It is also the headquarters of the Tri Services Command.
In 1789 the government of Bengal established a penal colony on Chatham Island in the southeast bay of Great Andaman, named Port Blair to honor Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company. After two years, the colony moved to the northeast part of Great Andaman and was named Port Cornwallis after Admiral William Cornwallis. However, there was much disease and death in the penal colony, and the government ceased operating it in May 1796.

The Andaman Islands form an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal between India, to the west, and Myanmar, to the north and east. Most are part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India, while a small number in the north of the archipelago, including the Coco Islands, belong to Myanmar.
Birds
Endemic or near endemic birds include
Spilornis elgini, a serpent-eagle
Rallina canningi, a crake (endemic; data-deficient per IUCN 2000)
Columba palumboides, a wood-pigeon
Macropygia rufipennis, a cuckoo dove

The islands' many caves, such as those at Chalis Ek are nesting grounds for the edible-nest swiftlet, whose nests are prized in China for bird's nest soup.
The islands also have a number of endemic reptiles, toads and frogs, such as the South Andaman krait (Bungarus andamanensis) and Andaman water monitor (Varanus salvator andamanensis).
Reptiles & Amphibians
There is a sanctuary 45 miles from Havelock Island for saltwater crocodiles. Over the past 25 years there have been 24 crocodile attacks with four fatalities, including the death of American tourist Lauren Failla. The government has been criticized for failing to inform tourists of the crocodile sanctuary and danger, while simultaneously promoting tourism. Crocodiles are not only found within the sanctuary, but throughout the island chain in varying densities. They are habitat restricted, so the population is stable but not large. Populations occur throughout available mangrove habitat on all major islands, including a few creeks on Havelock. The species uses the ocean as a means of travel between different rivers and estuaries, thus they are not as commonly observed in open ocean. It is best to avoid swimming near mangrove areas or the mouths of creeks; swimming in the open ocean should be safe, but it is best to have a spotter around.
Government
Port Blair is the chief community on the islands, and the administrative centre of the Union Territory. The Andaman Islands form a single administrative district within the Union Territory, the Andaman district (the Nicobar Islands were separated and established as the new Nicobar district in 1974).

Decent transport between Port Blair and Havelock island. Good and clean boats.The staff is also very decent and helpful. very convenient way of transport, more expensive than government ferries but there is a possibility to buy tickets in advance.No doubt this Catamaran is a combo of comfort and luxury, cruising through the beautiful sea of A & N. One can board it from Phoenix Bay Jetty at Port Blair to visit Havelock and/ or Neil Islands. Makruzz have seating on two decks with upper deck seats costing more. Views from Makruzz's upper deck are not good as life-rafts kept along the windows cause obstruction and also you feel like just sitting in a restaurant, I would suggest book in the lower deck. Lower deck is cheaper, its more lively and spacious because of capacity or number of seats to accommodate more people, moreover it has a better view from all the directions. The seats were very comfortable, air-conditioning was good, there is a snacks counter which serves tea/ coffee n most of the commonly consumed snacks. Best thing about Makruzz is its online reservation system where you can choose your seats as per your preference, make the payment online and get an instant confirmation of your booking, you don't need to wait or depend on brokers paying them an extra fee/ commission. I have seen this with Coastal Cruise in particular where you have to call their office to get a tentative booking and they will always force you to book a higher category seats saying lower is not available as they know higher categories get booked or filled at last only. On negative side its quite costly compared to government ferry but its really difficult to get the seats in government one but the kind of luxury you are getting on this cost in Makruzz is worth paying for in particular if your are traveling with your family. Crew were very attentive and took good care of people.

Havelock Island : Some 2.5 hours (54 kms) away from Port Blair, Havelock offers the best diving sites & unspoiled sandy beaches. People can reach Havelock Island through ship and regular ship service run between Port Blair and Havelock. At Havelock Island, you can visit beaches of Radhanagar and Elephant beach. On Elephant beach, people can even watch training of elephants and elephants swimming in sea. Scuba diving is probably the biggest activity on Havelock island other than lying around and eating seafood.
Neil Island: A marvelous Island with plenty of marine life, Neil Island is an ideal location for eco-tourism. Neil Island is also known as the vegetable bowl of Andamans. The sandy beaches at Sitapur, Bharatpur and Lakshmanpur are very attractive for spending the evenings. Neil Island is connected by regular Boat service from Port Blair. Ross Island ; The Ross Island is a 20-minute boat ride from Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. Water Sports Complex : Andaman Water Sports Complex offers all kinds of water sports facilities: Sail boats, para sailing, water scooters, rowing boats, kayaks, paddle boats, water skiing facilities etc.,. Boating from this complex up to the Ross Island is really an exciting experience. There is an artificial waterfall as well, which is a great attraction among the visitors

Hon’ble LG releases Travel Guide Andaman Chronicle’s ‘The Islands’
Reiterates need for maintaining balance & harmony between four centers of gravity to take isle on the path of development
Port Blair, July 09: Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. A K Singh (Retd.) has reiterated the need for maintaining balance and harmony between the four centres of gravity in the Islands while taking the Islands forward on the path of development. The first centre of gravity is the strategic importance of the Islands, the second is the people, the third the indigenous tribes and the fourth the ecology of the Islands, Hon’ble Lt. Governor said at a function held at Raj Niwas for the release of a travel guide, Andaman Chronicle’s ‘The Islands’. The function also marked the successful completion of his two years in office as the Lt. Governor of the Islands. Many of those present on the occasion congratulated the Lt. Governor for this.
Releasing the book ‘The Islands’ Hon’ble Lt. Governor complimented Shri Denis Giles and Ms. Kavita Choudhary Jha, the author and co-author of the book and said that the Travel Guide, which is a comprehensive guide, will surely help islanders as well as tourists know more about the Islands and their exotic beauty. The book has the quality and covers all aspects of the Islands.
Shri Denis Giles and Ms. Kavita Choudhary, gave a brief account of their motivation to compile the booklet and the long journey in completion of the travel guide book. While Shri Giles stated that it was a labour of love of an Editor, Ms. Kavita Choudhary Jha elaborated on her emotional link with the Islands since the tsunami devastation. They also congratulated Hon’blr Lt. Governor on his two years completion in office and expressed gratitude to him and the Administration for the support in bringing out the book.
Shri Girish Arora, President ACCI while expressing his happiness on the comprehensive nature of the book for the benefit of tourists, complimented the authors. He reiterated support of the Andaman Chamber for all such initiatives.
The function was attended by the Chief Secretary and senior officers of the Administration, representatives of the Andaman Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Industry, Nancowry Tribal Council as well as prominent civil society members. Ms Rubina Siddique compered the whole show.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Lt. Governor outlined his vision for the future development of the lslands. While we move forward in the path of development, there has to be a balance and harmony between development and the environment, he said. It is imperative that we recognize the significance of the four centres of gravity as far as these islands are concerned. In his speech, he further elaborated the various steps taken by the Administration for the welfare of the people, notably in the field of Education, Healthcare and Tourism. On the health sector, the setting up of the Medical College will change the health care scenario in these Islands. A large number of specialists will now be available for the benefit of the Islanders. Further, 85 local students will be admitted into the MBBS course of this Medical College each year and thus in the coming years, we will see a large number of doctors from among the youth of these Islands.
