My buddies Alex Fogg, Joe Kistel and I had been filming and collecting lionfish at various sites in the Gulf southwest of St. George Island FL. We had been taking turns with Alex and Joe diving together while I dove solo. This was my third and final dive of the day on a man-made structure in 93' feet of water approximately 22 miles due south of St. Vincent Island.
The shark enters the camera's field of view at 3:48 and a moment later catches my eye. I instantly recognized it as great white and you can faintly hear me say "Oh my God". I estimate the fish was 35' or so below me. It spooked me in that it had approached from behind and had already passed me when I saw it. I watched until it swam out of sight then re-cocked my speargun which I usually unload when heading back to the boat as a safety precaution.
I glanced around looking for the shark and up at the boat to make sure the dive ladder was indeed down. I noticed a small lionfish had escaped from my bag and was swimming down and you can hear me say "oh no". The bag of lionfish was positively buoyant and it drifted into me dragging the stringer of mangroves with it. I moved it out of the way and kept scanning the water column below. My first two dives had been to 120' and I had pushed this dive at 93' to my limit of bottom time. I needed to do this safety stop to avoid the bends, so I stayed where I was while my computer counted down the required 3 minutes. I took another quick look at my boat and another at my computer which shows me at 15' below the surface.
Most sharks have a tendency to come back for another look and that's exactly what this one did. Fortunately, I was looking in the general direction when I faintly saw something that caught my eye. It was the shark about 40' away coming straight at me from below. I've had countless encounters with bulls, sandbars and a few tigers and hammerheads. Over the years, I've learned the best defense is to go on the offense and let them see that I'm not intimidated. Turning and running could trigger the predator/prey instinct, so I stood my ground aiming my speargun at its head. For a second I figured this was it and was prepared to fend it off with my gun like I have done countless times before with curious or aggressive sharks. Fortunately, for whatever reason, this one turned at about 15' away and gave me a full profile view. I say "Oh my God" again and then let out a loud sigh of relief when he turns again and heads back down. I watched until it disappeared again then decided to take my chances with decompression sickness rather than a third visit from the shark, so I skipped the remaining 2 minutes of wait time and headed to the surface and safety of the boat.
I estimate the shark was 9-10' long and at no time did it seem aggressive or anything other than curious. I'm a charter captain and I had a juvenile great white around 12' long circle my boat last year about 30 miles out around the same time the tagged great white shark named Katherine was being tracked in the Northern Gulf. I had heard other reports of random sightings and saw the news reports of the great white caught off the beach in Panama City so I knew great whites come into the Gulf. This was the first one I've ever seen while diving and this experience will make me reconsider diving in murky water with limited visibility. I'm glad we both went our separate ways fully intact and healthy, but I hope I never have to experience another encounter like that again.

While diving with Coast Watch Alliance in the last Gulf Coast Lionfish Coalition derby in Pensacola, FL we came across a reef that had a high density of lionfish present. We determined that this site was in fact an upside down sunken Airplane. In the northern Gulf of Mexico we see some of the highest densities of lionfish reported. Due to lack of air and bottom time we needed to return on a different day. our combined total was more than 200 lionfish and there were still a number of lionfish that could not be reached and will need to removed on the next visit.

In 1975, Steve Earle moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he met Guy Clark and his wife Susanna. He appears in the 1975 film Heartworn Highways, which documents the songwriting scene in Nashville around Clark, including fellow Texas musicians Townes van Zandt and Rodney Crowell. Earle had already met Van Zandt in Texas, and refers to Clark and Van Zandt as his mentors and teachers. Clark was instrumental in Earle being hired as a songwriter by the Sunbury Dunbar publishing division of RCA. There he wrote songs for the likes of Carl Perkins, Johnny Lee, Vince Gill and Steve Wariner. His song "Mustang Wine" was due to be recorded by Elvis Presley in 1975, but Presley did not turn up for the recording session. The song was released as a single by Carl Perkins. He also wrote the Patty Loveless hit "A Little Bit in Love." Earle did backing vocals on "Desperados Waiting for a Train" (together with Emmylou Harris) on Clark's first album Old No. 1 and toured in Clark's band. In 1981 Earle achieved a top-ten cut with "When You Fall in Love," which was recorded by Johnny Lee. In 1985 one of his compositions "A Far Cry from You" was recorded by Connie Smith, who made the song a minor hit that year.
Earle's early work as a recorded performer was in the rockabilly style, and can be heard on his compilation album: Early Tracks. The album was recorded for Epic Records, but the company dropped Earle, only releasing the album in 1987 after he found success with MCA Nashville. Earle had to wait until 1986 before his first album, Guitar Town, was released by MCA. It was a critical success and was eventually certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The follow-up albums Exit 0 in 1987 and the certified-gold Copperhead Road, 1988, built on this success. With Copperhead Road, Earle moved to MCA Los Angeles and drew increasingly on Rock and roll influences.
Earle is the subject of the documentary film Just an American Boy, directed by Amos Poe, which explores his political views as well as his music. The film was shot while Earle was touring in support of his 2002 release Jerusalem. In 2005, he caused consternation among his fans by allowing the song The Revolution Starts Now to be used by General Motors in a TV advertisement for pick-up trucks. In 2006, Earle contributed a cover of Randy Newman's song "Rednecks" to the tribute album Sail Away: The Songs of Randy Newman.[6] Earle is also the subject of two biographies, Steve Earle: Fearless Heart, Outlaw Poet, by the noted New York-based music writer David McGee and Hardcore Troubadour: The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle by Lauren St. John.
In September 2007, Earle released his twelfth studio album, Washington Square Serenade,on New West Records. Earle recorded the album after relocating to New York City, and it was his first attempt at using digital audio workstation ProTools, as opposed to traditional analog recording techniques.[8] The disc features wife Allison Moorer on "Days Aren't Long Enough" and "Down Here Below." The album includes Earle's version of Tom Waits' song "Way Down in the Hole" which is featured as the theme song for the fifth season of The Wire in which Earle himself appears as Walon. In 2008, Earle produced Joan Baez's album Day After Tomorrow. (Prior to their collaboration on Day After Tomorrow, Baez had covered two Earle songs, "Christmas in Washington" and "Jerusalem," on previous albums.) In the winter, he toured Europe and North America in support of Washington Square Serenade, performing half the set solo and the other half with a DJ. On May 12, 2009, Earle released a tribute album, Townes, on New West Records. The album contains 15 songs written by his late friend and musical mentor Townes Van Zandt. Guest artists appearing on the album include Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Earle's wife Allison Moorer, and his son Justin Townes Earle. Both Washington Square Serenade and Townes also earned Grammy awards in the contemporary folk category.
Since his emergence as a performer, his songs have been covered by various well-known artists, including Joan Baez, The Pretenders, The Proclaimers, Eddi Reader, The Highwaymen, Waylon Jennings, Levon Helm, Emmylou Harris, Percy Sledge and Johnny Cash.Travis Tritt had a #7 country hit in 1995 with Earle's "Sometimes She Forgets."

Gulf of Mexico Update host Michael Edward, with guests Dr. Janet Starr Hull (http://janethull.com) and Christy Whitaker from July 22, 2011.
The Gulf of Mexico is heating up due to a rise in magma flow convecting (running like a conveyor belt) under the Gulf floor. This is the Earth Expansion Theory, where the Earth heats up, filling the salt domes with tar (magma melting oil and creating tar), and pushing the ocean floor up. The tar bubbles as it heats up, and it outgases.
This expansion lifts the Gulf floor, which displaces the water and floods the coastal areas, and also causes movement along the bordering plate boundaries and fracture zones. Texas is now having more earthquakes everyday, including the 3.0 west of Waxahachie a few days ago along the Balcones. The Llano Uplift will respond, as well as the New Madrid.

This movie shows a physics-based computer simulation of the tsunami generated by a submarine landslide in the Gulf of Mexico. The 500 cubic km landslide occurred in Mississippi Canyon, a massive scar located southwest of the Mississippi River mouth. Tsunami from 2 to 20 meters reach all shores of the Gulf. The actual event happened about 7000 years ago, but the consequences of similar events are today taken into consideration by nuclear power plant designers.

View video footage captured by the Little Hercules remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and camera platform during the April 26 ROV dive from NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer during the Gulf of Mexico Expedition 2012. The dive was conducted at site 15577 -- a recently mapped but never-before seen shipwreck in the western Gulf of Mexico. The dive revealed the remnants of a copper-sheathed sailing ship, likely from the early to mid-19th century. While most of the wood has since disintegrated, the oxidized copper sheathing remained along with a variety of artifacts. These included plates, glass bottles, guns, cannons, the ship's stove, navigational instruments, and anchors. This was a spectacular dive that represented a truly remarkable find.

The Asian tiger prawn, a foot-long crustacean with a voracious appetite and a proclivity for disease, has invaded the northern Gulf, threatening prized native species, from crabs and oysters to smaller brown and white shrimp.
Though no one is sure what the ecological impact will be, scientists fear a tiger prawn takeover could knock nature's balance out of whack and turn a healthy, diverse marine habitat into one dominated by a single invasive species.

Besides the economic impacts of the oil spill -- we've had serious health impacts -- many people can't breathe -- others have had to get out of the seafood business to work in other trades. I'd like you guys to watch the following videos.....
I guess in a way I'm lucky -- I'm still young enough to turn my life around. This guy is 58 years old....he's not so lucky! His name is George Barisich and he's a fisherman down south of New Orleans....
As I' mentioned in a previous video -- I'm going to have to uproot and move 600 miles away to Texas.....not something I wanted to do at this age!

This. Is. Incredible. It is unlike any other condo on the Pinellas beaches! Imagine having 4,250 A/C sq ft of beachfront living space, over 800 sq ft of balconies, & custom-designed putting green for your exclusive use! As if that is not enough, across the street you have two deep-water docks w/lifts & a 31' FourWinns boat that is included. With an emphasis on privacy, the Dunes is gated & set 138' back from Gulf Blvd. There are only 6 condominiums, one per floor with two huge balconies, one facing east & the other west - which includes a 5-person spa. The beachfront balcony, @ approx. 12'x43', overlooks the heated pool and has a very personal relationship with the beach. Its sand-colored tiles appear to be an extension of the pristine white sand that leads out to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Each unit was finished to the original owners' specifications. No two have the same doors, cabinetry, granite, flooring, etc. No expense was spared in making this the ultimate beach house. Unit 100 has $500,000 worth of upgrades and furnishings. From custom-made furniture to high-end electronics and designer finishes, it is all here and then some. The new lucky owners need to only bring their toothbrush and favorite putter, (for the custom-designed putting green that is accessed from your east balcony). There is a 1-car garage & a covered parking space. There is even a gas-powered generator that runs a/c, large appliances & one of the elevators in the event of a black-out! Magnificent!

We would have like to do it faster but the wind was mostly coming out of the east and which wasn't ideal for most of the time. This time of year there are a lot of fronts that come down to die out into the Gulf and it turns into a bath tub effect with all of the swirling winds mixing it up. But all in all it was a g

We sailed 400 miles from Pensacola to Tampa Bay, Florida and we made it in 8 days. We would have like to do it faster but the wind was mostly coming out of the east and which wasn't ideal for most of the time. This time of year there are a lot of fronts that come down to die out into the Gulf and it turns into a bath tub effect with all of the swirling winds mixing it up. But all in all it was a good passage and we didn't break anything major. Just a pull cord on the generator.

-- All Kiwis need to see this video - please share!
John Wathen is an award winning photo journalist who recently toured Aotearoa recounting his experience both on the ground and in the air documenting the catastrophic 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
John flew out over the gulf in a light plane and captured the event as it was unfolding resulting in some amazing footage and images of the worst environmental disaster in America's history.
His presentation contains some blunt warnings and important lessons for New Zealand as we consider the threat of deep sea oil drilling in our waters in the near future.

Richplanet TV - full documentary - go here to see other documentaries about the things the mainstream media do not touch! http://www.richplanet.net/starship.php
Ian R. Crane is an ex oil field executive. He was one of the first civilians to see the aftermath of the Kuwait oil fields after the first Gulf War. In this interview Ian explains how oil was used to create a global economy based on the U.S. dollar. We also discuss Russian oil field strategy and the theory of abiotic oil. Finally, from his inside sources in the industry Ian has learned some of what took place on the Deepwater Horizon rig in the days before it exploded. He is now certain this disaster was started deliberately and has named the individual whose actions may have caused this. This is yet another story that mainstream media have totally failed to report objectively.

VATUSA's Bianneal "Cross the Gulf" flyin sees oceanic airspace open up in the Gulf of Mexico. This year the event carried traffic primarily between Cancun and Houston, as well as a Mexico City to New Orleans
For this event I flew the Cancun to Houston track in the PMDG 737-900
I flew the PMDG Boeing 737NGX (737-800). This product can be purchased at
http://www.precisionmanuals.com/pages/product/FSX/ngx8900.html
In this case I used a United Airlines Livery.
For the Weather Radar to work correctly, ActiveSky Next needs to have been purchased, installed, and running.
ActiveSky Next can be purchased at http://www.hifitechinc.com/products/activeskynext
During the flight, charts were read off a second computer/monitor.
This recording was made with Fraps, recording in 1080p (Edited to 720p)

Everyone who is concerned about the massive and growing Louisiana sinkhole, the continuing poisoning in the Gulf of Mexico from the 2010 oil spill and the "cleanup", earthquakes seemingly caused by gas fracking in Texas and other states, and possible connection to the caldera under Yellowstone Park will want to watch and listen to this in depth analysis from 2011. The Countdown starts with the "Navy Map" and takes you through maps, charts, statistics, all with bearing on what is going on today in Louisiana, Texas, other Gulf states, but may soon have a disastrous and possibly planned impact on most of the United States of America. Pass this on to your friends!

Spike Lee on Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (2010)
Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic tropical cyclone of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the costliest natural disaster,...
Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic tropical cyclone of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States. Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall. At least 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane; total property damage was estimated at $81 billion (2005 USD), nearly triple the damage brought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 and crossed southern Florida as a moderate Category 1 hurricane, causing some deaths and flooding there before strengthening rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane over the warm Gulf water, but weakened before making its second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on the morning of Monday, August 29 in southeast Louisiana. It caused severe destruction along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas, much of it due to the storm surge. The most significant number of deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland.[4] Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks.[4] However, the worst property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as all Mississippi beachfront towns, which were flooded over 90% in hours, as boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inland, with waters reaching 6--12 miles (10--19 km) from the beach.
The hurricane surge protection failures in New Orleans are considered the worst civil engineering disaster in U.S. history[5] and prompted a lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the designers and builders of the levee system as mandated by the Flood Control Act of 1965. Responsibility for the failures and flooding was laid squarely on the Army Corps in January 2008 by Judge Stanwood Duval, U.S. District Court,[6] but the federal agency could not be held financially liable because of sovereign immunity in the Flood Control Act of 1928. There was also an investigation of the responses from federal, state and local governments, resulting in the resignation of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director Michael D. Brown, and of New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Eddie Compass.
Several agencies including the United States Coast Guard (USCG), National Hurricane Center (NHC), and National Weather Service (NWS) were commended for their actions. They provided accurate hurricane weather tracking forecasts with sufficient lead time.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. It claimed eleven lives[5][6][7][8] and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010.[7][9] The total discharge has been estimated at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3).[3]
A massive response ensued to protect beaches, wetlands and estuaries from the spreading oil utilizing skimmer ships, floating booms, controlled burns and 1.84 million US gallons (7,000 m3) of Corexit oil dispersant.[10] After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on 19 September 2010.[11] Some reports indicate the well site continues to leak.[12][13] Due to the months-long spill, along with adverse effects from the response and cleanup activities, extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats, fishing and tourism industries, and human health problems have continued through 2013.[14][15] Three years after the spill, tar balls could still be found on the Mississippi coast.[16] In July 2013, the discovery of a 40,000 pound tar mat near East Grand Terre, Louisiana prompted the closure of waters to commercial fishing.

The seismic, Maximum Flooding Surfaces (MFS), marker species, high resolution biostratigraphy and well logs permitted a correlation of the Miocene to Cretaceous sediments in the shallow shelf deep wells in South Marsh Island blocks 222 and 234 to the Davy Jones #1 and #2 Wells in South Marsh Island Block 230 and 234 deep shallow shelf Gulf of Mexico. Within the upper Miocene MFS 7.30Ma (BIG A), 8.80Ma (DISC 12) and 10.20Ma (BIG 2) MFS were recognized in the South Marsh Island block 222, 230, 234 and 245. Within the middle Miocene the 12.0Ma (TEXT W), 13.15 Ma (BIG H) and 14.20 Ma (CIB OP) MFS were recognized in the same blocks. Sediments in the upper Miocene were deposited in Ecozones 2 to 3; middle Miocene sediments were deposited in Ecozone 4, mainly as Lowstand slope fan sediments.
This direct line of correlation from Northern to Southern Gulf of Mexico may provide additional value to future exploration and age of potential reservoirs in the waters offshore Mexico.

"Kindra's Window"
This film follows the lives of Kindra Arnesen and family from Hurricane Katrina through the BP Oil Disaster from their perspective in Venice Louisianan; first land fall of Hurricane Katrina and closest populated land mass to the Deep Water Horizon site.
Gulf Coast Disasters, long removed from the news cycle, are eating away at the livelihoods and patriotism of those left behind to deal with the front lines of the environmental and economic terrorism that is the legacy of our government.
The disaster is ongoing.
Kindra's Window (rough cut) perspective on gulf coast disaster premiered April 19th 2011 @ N.O.Space
(And after all this time nothing has changed.....)
*Kindra is a true American Heroine.... And she is one of the people who got me started reporting on YouTube. (THANK YOU) -Magick
