McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Essex, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums).[1] Lætitia Sadier would later join the band on vocals on their third studio album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today.[2]
They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3]

Frans Hals usually painted life-size portraits, but he also made a number of tiny likenesses. Among the loans from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo collection is a painting hardly bigger than a sheet of paper, in which Hals’s celebrated brushwork, loose and suggestive, is scaled down to breathtaking effect. It is a masterpiece of virtuosity and intensity. In this lecture, Walsh surveys the careers of Hals and his competitors.

Frans Hals 1582- 1666)
Frans Hals wordt gerekend tot de oude Hollandse meesters en geldt als één van de belangrijkste onder hen.
Zijn wereldwijde faam dankt hij vooral aan de levendige en kleurrijke schuttersstukken in het Frans Hals museum, en aan de ook daar aanwezige groepsportretten van regenten en regentessen.
Verder geniet hij bekendheid door zijn sprekende portretten van volksfiguren, kinderen en allerlei andere tijdgenoten.
Zijn portret is in 1968 als afbeelding op het Nederlandse bankbiljet van 10 gulden geplaatst.
Veel van zijn werken zijn verdwenen, naar schatting worden er tussen de 145 en 222 schilderijen aan hem toegeschreven

Frans Hals also produced genre paintings of drunkards, gypsies and woman at work.
His almost sketchy paintings were marked by a tremendous vitality and apt charactarization.
The impressionists regarded Frans Hals as one of their predecessors.

For the second episode of AT5's live program Amsterdam 2013, they visit the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. The museum is celebrating 100 years with the exhibition Frans Hals: Faced with Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian. Together with Anna Tummers, curator of art in the Frans Hals Museum, AT5 take's a peek at the new exhibition that opens on 23 March. Central to the exhibition is the comparison between the works of Van Neck with works of other great masters such as Rembrandt.
In addition, AT5 speaks with night mayor Mirik Milan about the event 24H Amsterdam and his vision of creating a 24-hour economy in Amsterdam. Also AT5 looks at the Czar Peter House.

Het Frans Hals Museum is een gemeentelijk museum in Haarlem en staat bekend als museum van de Gouden Eeuw. Het museum is opgericht in 1862 en was gehuisvest in het stadhuis dat voor het museum werd uitgebreid met een aantal museumzalen aan het Prinsenhof. In 1913 verhuisde het museum naar het Oudemannenhuis, een 17e-eeuws hofje aan het Groot Heiligland. De collectie is gebaseerd op de rijke verzameling van de stad zelf die al vanaf de 16e eeuw is opgebouwd. Het museum bezit honderden schilderijen waaronder meer dan een dozijn schilderijen van Frans Hals, waaraan het museum zijn naam dankt. De moderne collectie is te vinden in het museum de Hallen, een dependance van het Frans Hals Museum.

Hals nació en 1583 en Amberes (Bélgica), pero se trasladó a Holanda cuando tenía tres años. Se convirtió en discípulo de Karel van Mander en 1603. En 1610 se casó con Anneke Harmensdochter y se incorporó al gremio de pintores de Haarlem.
Frans Hals pintó el primero de sus famosos schutterstukken en 1616 y el último en 1639. Frans Hals the Elder (c. 1580 – 26 August 1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals was also instrumental in the evolution of 17th century group portraiture.
Hals was born in 1580 or 1581, in Antwerp. Like many, Hals' family fled during the Fall of Antwerp (1584-1585) from the Spanish Netherlands to Haarlem, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Hals studied under another Flemish-émigré, Karel van Mander (1548–1606), whose Mannerist influence, however, is not noticeably visible in his work. At the age of 27, he became a member of the city's painter's corporation, the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke, and he started to earn money as an art restorer for the city council. He worked on their large art collection that Karel van Mander had described in his book The Painting-Book (Middle Dutch: Het Schilder-Boeck), published in 1604. The most notable of these were the works of Geertgen tot Sint Jans, Jan van Scorel and Jan Mostaert, that hung in de St. Jans kerk in Haarlem. The restoration work was paid for by the city of Haarlem, since all religious art was confiscated after the iconoclasm, but the entire collection of paintings was not formally possessed by the city council until 1625, after the city fathers had decided which paintings were suitable for the city hall. The remaining art that was considered too "Roman Catholic" was sold to Cornelis Claesz van Wieringen, a fellow guild member, on the grounds that he remove it from the city. It was under these circumstances that Hals began his career in portraiture, since the market for religious themes had disappeared.

Pieter Biesboer, curator emeritus of the Frans Hals Museum in The Netherlands, spoke at 6p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Museum's Peristyle. The audience was invited to view the Museum's newly acquired painting by Hals, "Van Campen Family Portrait in a Landscape", in the Great Gallery following the presentation.

Lecture 5 Frans Hals’s Portrait of a Preacher (ca. 1660): Virtuosity and the Rough Style Friday, February 20, 2015, 1:30 pm Frans Hals usually painted life-size portraits, but he also made a number of tiny likenesses. Among the loans from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo collection is a painting hardly bigger than a sheet of paper, in which Hals’s celebrated brushwork, loose and suggestive, is scaled down to breathtaking effect. It is a masterpiece of virtuosity and intensity. In this lecture, Walsh surveys the careers of Hals and his competitors. -

Frans Hals 1582- 1666) Frans Hals wordt gerekend tot de oude Hollandse meesters en geldt als één van de belangrijkste onder hen. Zijn wereldwijde faam dankt hij vooral aan de levendige en kleurrijke schuttersstukken in het Frans Hals museum, en aan de ook daar aanwezige groepsportretten van regenten en regentessen. Verder geniet hij bekendheid door zijn sprekende portretten van volksfiguren, kinderen en allerlei andere tijdgenoten. Het museum is opgericht in 1862 en was gehuisvest in het stadhuis dat voor het museum werd uitgebreid met een aantal museumzalen aan het Prinsenhof. In 1913 verhuisde het museum naar het Oudemannenhuis, een 17e-eeuws hofje aan het Groot Heiligland. Frans Hals
Hals nació en 1583 en Amberes (Bélgica), pero se trasladó a Holanda cuando tenía tres años. Se convirtió en discípulo de Karel van Mander en 1603. En 1610 se casó con Anneke Harmensdochter y se incorporó al gremio de pintores de Haarlem. Frans Hals pintó el primero de sus famosos schutterstukken en 1616 y el último en 1639. A remarkable portrait by 17th--century Dutch artist Frans Hals went on public view Oct. 13 at the Toledo Museum of Art following a Masters Series presentation by one of the world's leading experts on the artist and his work. Pieter Biesboer, curator emeritus of the Frans Hals Museum in The Netherlands, spoke at 6p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Museum's Peristyle. The Toledo Museum of Art has announced a major acquisition by Dutch master Frans Hals. Family Portrait in a Landscape was introduced to the media on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in the Great Gallery. This acquisition has been in process for more than a year and is a major coup for the Museum. The public will have their first opportunity to see this glorious work on Thursday, Oct. 13 as part of a Masters Series lecture and public viewing beginning at 6 p.m. in the Peristyle. Admission is free. The lecture brings world-renowned Hals scholar Pieter Biesboer to Toledo to discuss the artist's work and this acquisition in particular. -

They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3]

Hals nació en 1583 en Amberes (Bélgica), pero se trasladó a Holanda cuando tenía tres años. Se convirtió en discípulo de Karel van Mander en 1603. En 1610 se casó con Anneke Harmensdochter y se incorporó al gremio de pintores de Haarlem.
Frans Hals pintó el primero de sus famosos schutterstukken en 1616 y el último en 1639. Hasta el momento de su muerte, a la avanzada edad de 84 años, enseñó sus técnicas pictóricas a varios discípulos, entre ellos, a cinco de sus catorce hijos. Está enterrado en la ciudad de Haarlem, en la que había vivido casi toda la vida. Frans Hals pintó retratos colectivos, retratos individuales y escenas de la vida cotidiana. No obstante, es conocido principalmente por sus schutterstukken. Se trata de retratos colectivos de los guardias pertenecientes a las milicias cívicas del momento. Recibir el encargo de pintar un schutterstuk era un gran honor y suponía una tarea titánica. Hasta en cinco ocasiones le confiaron a Frans Hals encargos de esta magnitud.

This acquisition has been in process for more than a year and is a major coup for the Museum. The public will have their first opportunity to see this glorious work on Thursday, Oct. 13 as part of a Masters Series lecture and public viewing beginning at 6 p.m. in the Peristyle. Admission is free. The lecture brings world-renowned Hals scholar Pieter Biesboer to Toledo to discuss the artist's work and this acquisition in particular.

Picturae Digitises the Civic Guard Paintings by Frans Hals
Picturae had the honour of digitising the Civic Guard Paintings by Frans Hals using a newly designed installation on location in the museum. During digitisation the painting does not need to be moved, as the camera is held in a frame with a motorised, computer controlled base that allows it to be manoeuvered from left to right and top to bottom. For a Frans Hals civic guard painting, around fifty separate images needed to be taken in order to capture the overall picture. The images taken with the camera can automatically be pasted together with specially designed software with precision to the millimetre. McCarthy - Keep An Open Mind Or Else McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Essex, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums).[1] Lætitia Sadier would later join the band on vocals on their third studio album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today.[2] They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3] Eden, Gane and Williamson met at Barking Abbey Comprehensive School. Sinds 2008 wordt er in het museum een levendige dialoog gevoerd tussen oude meesters en kunstenaars van nu. Kunstenaar Arnoud Holleman (Haarlem, 1964) gaat hierin een stap verder. In de Schutterszaal realiseert hij een film waarin ‘het kijken’ centraal staat. De wereldberoemde schuttersstukken van Frans Hals vormen het decor voor een ensemble van 18 acteurs én een selectie van sculpturen van o.a. Mari Andriessen, Han Wezelaar en Charlotte van Pallandt. -

Wie was de echte Kenau? In de nieuwe film over Kenau met in de hoofdrol Monic Hendrickx is ze vooral een sterke vrouw, een heldin. Wat weten we echt nog over haar? In het Frans Hals Museum gaat de kleine tentoonstelling aan de hand van prenten, tekeningen en schilderen in op de beeldvorming rond Kenau.

River of Fundament is a radical reinvention of Norman Mailer's novel Ancient Evenings, this epic film is the latest work by world renowned art visionary Matthew Barney in collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler -- for which they developed part of the soundtrack at the Holland Festival in 2012.
Barney and Bepler fuse narrative cinema, live performance, sculpture and opera, reconstructing Mailer's hypersexual story of Egyptian gods and the seven stages of death alongside the rise and fall of the American car industry. Alluring, authentic and intense, this vast, multidimensional experience is interspersed with remarkable live performances filmed over six years.
Taking the American landscape as its backdrop, the film River of Fundament is an epic story of regeneration and rebirth, set in three major American cities -- Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York. Picturae had the honour of digitising the Civic Guard Paintings by Frans Hals using a newly designed installation on location in the museum.
During digitisation the painting does not need to be moved, as the camera is held in a frame with a motorised, computer controlled base that allows it to be manoeuvered from left to right and top to bottom. For a Frans Hals civic guard painting, around fifty separate images needed to be taken in order to capture the overall picture. The images taken with the camera can automatically be pasted together with specially designed software with precision to the millimetre. In addition, the installation is designed in such a way that the whole object is properly lit, meaning that no shadow is visible on the digital images, the images are sharp and there is no reflection.
A major advantage of this digitisation method is that the painting does not have to change location, so avoiding potential stress to the precious work of art. The system may be used in any location, even when there is very little space available, given that we can set up the equipment very close to the original.

McCarthy - Keep An Open Mind Or Else
McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Essex, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums).[1] Lætitia Sadier would later join the band on vocals on their third studio album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today.[2]
They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3]
Eden, Gane and Williamson met at Barking Abbey Comprehensive School. Gane was originally a drummer, but was initially taught to play guitar by Eden, who also taught Williamson the basics of bass.[2] Eden and Gane were fans of punk groups such as the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Buzzcocks, and they covered their songs in small gigs as teenagers.[2] Baker joined in 1984, and with the new line-up deciding on the name McCarthy (a tongue-in-cheek reference to American politician Joe McCarthy), they released a self-financed first single, "In Purgatory" in 1985.[4] The band were signed by the Pink Label, releasing two further singles "Red Sleeping Beauty" and "Frans Hals".[3] The band had a track included on the NME C86 album ("Celestial City").
Their debut album I Am a Wallet was released in 1987.[1] The album was virtually ignored by UK radio programmers, except for BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. Because of Eden's Marxist political views, the band were, to their dismay, often lumped in with other left-wing acts like Billy Bragg and The Redskins.[2] I Am a Wallet has since been described by Nicky Wire as "the most perfect record, a Communist manifesto with tunes",[5] and was rated by James Dean Bradfield as his top British album of all time.[6]
Two further singles appeared in early 1988 and were followed by a second album, The Enraged Will Inherit the Earth, which was considerably less well received.
A year later, they released a third album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today, on which they were joined by Gane's girlfriend Lætitia Sadier on vocals. McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Essex, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums).[1] Lætitia Sadier would later join the band on vocals on their third studio album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today.[2]
They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3]
Eden, Gane and Williamson met at Barking Abbey Comprehensive School. Gane was originally a drummer, but was initially taught to play guitar by Eden, who also taught Williamson the basics of bass.[2] Eden and Gane were fans of punk groups such as the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Buzzcocks, and they covered their songs in small gigs as teenagers.[2] Baker joined in 1984, and with the new line-up deciding on the name McCarthy (a tongue-in-cheek reference to American politician Joe McCarthy), they released a self-financed first single, "In Purgatory" in 1985.[4] The band were signed by the Pink Label, releasing two further singles "Red Sleeping Beauty" and "Frans Hals".[3] The band had a track included on the NME C86 album ("Celestial City").
Their debut album I Am a Wallet was released in 1987.[1] The album was virtually ignored by UK radio programmers, except for BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. Because of Eden's Marxist political views, the band were, to their dismay, often lumped in with other left-wing acts like Billy Bragg and The Redskins.[2] I Am a Wallet has since been described by Nicky Wire as "the most perfect record, a Communist manifesto with tunes",[5] and was rated by James Dean Bradfield as his top British album of all time.[6]
Two further singles appeared in early 1988 and were followed by a second album, The Enraged Will Inherit the Earth, which was considerably less well received.
A year later, they released a third album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today, on which they were joined by Gane's girlfriend Lætitia Sadier on vocals. For weeks, France and the Netherlands wrangled over the fate of a pair of 17th-Century wedding portraits by Dutch master Rembrandt. While the Dutch government and Rijksmuseum tried to secure both paintings for the nation, France sought to buy one for the Louvre in Paris. But the €160m (£120m; $180m) price tag proved a deal breaker for the Dutch ... They would either hang opposite works by Frans Hals, or with other Rembrandts ... ....
