Paul Samuel Whiteman (March 28, 1890 – December 29, 1967) was an American bandleader, composer, orchestral director and violinist.
Leader of one of the most popular dance bands in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, Whiteman produced recordings that were immensely successful, and press notices often referred to him as the "King of Jazz". Using a large ensemble and exploring many styles of music, Whiteman is perhaps best known for his blending of symphonic music and jazz, as typified by his 1924 commissioning and debut of George Gershwin's jazz-influenced "Rhapsody in Blue". Later, Whiteman's work on Symphonic Jazz influenced many jazz musicians either way - directly or indirectly - as diverse as Miles Davis, Gil Evans, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Wynton Marsalis and other modern artists. Whiteman recorded many jazz and pop standards during his career, including "Wang Wang Blues", "Mississippi Mud", "Rhapsody in Blue", "Wonderful One", "Hot Lips (He's Got Hot Lips When He Plays Jazz)", "Mississippi Suite", and "Grand Canyon Suite". His popularity faded in the swing music era of the middle 1930s, and by the 1940s Whiteman was semi-retired from music.

Original acoustic recording 10th June 1924 of George Gershwin's classic composition with Gershwin at the piano. Released on both sides of a 12'' 78 rpm record Amazing sound quality for an acoustic recording from the clarinet glissando ( played by Ross Gorman who played it as a joke for Gershwin during rehearsals for the première, Gershwin liked it so it stayed) the piano and orchestra. Gershwin and Whiteman recorded it electrically 21st April 1927. Paul Whiteman commissioned George Gershwin to write him an extended piece aiming to be the first artist to perform an all jazz concert at the Aeolian Hall in New York. He set a target of February 1924. Gershwin refused saying there wasn't enough time, however in early January 1924 his brother Ira brought to his attention an article in the New ...

Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra - Hot Lips, Fox trot (H.Busse, Henry Lange & Lou Davis), HMV 1922 (recorded in USA; UK pressing) NOTE: Several days ago, I uploaded "Thrill Me" - the faboulous side recorded by Henry Busse's dance orchestra in 1930 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZjpkMW1iYQ Here, Paul Whiteman plays the greatest hit composed by Henry Busse in 1922 - the bandleader who was born in Germany and as a teenager arrived in the US, to make a great career as the dance band leader and composer. The title of this tune - now, one of the jazz evergreens - refers, certainly, to the trumpeter's hot lips, when he begins to play his great solo. In the slideshow, however I did slide into a much more picturesque realm, which ain't the American jazzmen's "hot lips", but instead - the hot lip...

Original 78rpm courtesy of the Rick Colom Collection, recorded March 1929 but not issued until about a year-and-a-half later, following release of the 1930 Whiteman film “King Of Jazz” (in which “Nola” was featured). For the 78 flip side “New Tiger Rag,” listen here: https://youtu.be/pJmelxJJJjw Arranger Roy Bargy is at the piano on this playful treatment of the Vincent Lopez theme, which is highlighted by a crazed trombone solo perpetrated by comedic musician Wilbur “Willie” Hall. Hall was also given a featured spot in “King Of Jazz” making music on a tire pump and doing his amusing “Pop Goes The Weasel” violin act while wearing slapshoes. Years later he could be seen performing these same specialties on TV’s “Spike Jones Show” and “The Gong Show.” Digitally processed from 78rpm: (Royal...

My Ohio Home - Paul Whiteman and his orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke. This is the only known footage of Bix playing the cornet. A Fox Movietone Newsreel for the week of May 18, 1928, shows Paul Whiteman tearing up his old contract with Victor on the stroke of midnight. Paul now has a new contract with Columbia and leads his orchestra playing My Ohio Home. At one point, during a chorus by the brass section, we see Bix standing up and playing his part on the cornet. There are two transfers, one normal and a second one with somewhat more of a close-up.

INT...

Ferde Grofe first orchestrated his GRAND CANYON SUITE to match the size of Paul Whiteman's band. Later, he re-orchestrated it for a full symphony orchestra and it is that version by which it has been performed ever since. This first version will sound somewhat lean based on what we've become used to hearing, but this is the version that the world first heard. Recorded April 26-28,1932 in Camden, NJ. The eight sides of the original four 12-inch 78 rpm discs were digitized and audio restoration software applied but without added reverb or artificial ambiance.

George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 -- July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. Among his best known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935). Gershwin studied piano under Charles Hambitzer and composition with Rubin Goldmark and Henry Cowell. He began his career as a song plugger, but soon started composing Broadway theatre works with his brother Ira Gershwin and Buddy DeSylva. He moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger, where he began to compose An American in Paris. After returning to New York City, he wrote Porgy and Bess with Ira and the author DuBose Heyward....

Bing Crosby sings Louisiana accompanied by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. The side was recorded at Liederkranz Hall in New York City April 23, 1928 and released as Victor 21438 by the Victor Talking Machine Company of Camden, New Jersey. Twenty three musicians employed by Whiteman participated in this session and they are all listed in the video along with Bing and three vocal accompanists.Crosby began his association with Whiteman in December 1926 thanks to an introduction by Mildred Bailey, Whiteman's big band female vocalist (and Al Rinker's sister). Harry Barris, Al Rinker and Crosby would form the Rhythm Boys which would be employed by Whiteman. For some reason, the Rhythm Boys do not perform the vocals on this record. Crosby was into heavy drinking and increasingly on the outs with...

Air Force Brig. Gen. Paul Tibbets IV, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base near Knob Noster, talks about the important role his grandfather, Paul Tibbets Jr. ,had in his life and in history. Tibbets Jr. was the pilot of the Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare on Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945. Video by: ALLISON LONG | along@kcstar.com
A phenomenal Linda Moulton Howe breakthrough: an interview with an Airman First Class Force Dale Hogan who was face-to-face with a UFO at Whiteman Air Force Base in 1984. This his first recorded interview about the incident. A little known fact is that Col. Paul Tibbits, the man who piloted the Enola Gay that dropped the first atomic bomb, was stationed after the war at Roswell Air Force Base. Then, in the fall of 1984, the same unit that was at Roswell, the 509th Bomb Wing, was at Whiteman Air Force Base when it--and its atomic bombs--were visited by a UFO, with startling results. There is a relationship between the UFO phenomenon and our possession of nuclear weapons, and in this interview, Linda Moulton Howe reveals details of it that have never been disclosed before as she interviews...

Paul Samuel Whiteman (March 28,1890 - Dec.29,1967) was an American bandleader and orchestral director. He was the leader of the most popular dance bands in the United States during the 1920s, Whiteman's recordings were immensely successful, and press notices often referred to him as the "King of Jazz." Using a large ensemble and exploring many styles of music, Whiteman is perhaps best known for his blending of symphonic music and jazz, as typified by his 1924 commissioning and debut of George Gershwin's jazz-influenced "Rhapsody In Blue". His popularity faded in the swing music era of the 1930s, and by the 1940s Whiteman was semi-retired from music. Whiteman was born in Denver, Colorado. After a start as a classical violinist, he led a jazz-influenced dance band, which became popular loca...
Bandleader Paul Whiteman is the special guest. Also, Mark Goodson AND Bill Todman make an on-air appearance. Hosted by Robert Q. Lewis. Panel: Gene Rayburn, Joan Alexander, Bill Stern

A RARE SHORTWAVE BROADCAST WITH GRACIE FIELDS
Gracie is determined to play piano at Paul Whiteman's concert at Carnegie Hall, but Paul and everyone else try to talk her out of it.
Without a song the day would never end.
Without a song the road could never bend
Without a song a man ain't got a friend
Without a Song
That field of corn would never see a plow.
That field of corn would be deserted now.
A man is born but he's no good nohow
Without a Song.
I got my troubles and woes
But sure as I know
the Jordon will roll
I'll get along
As long as my song
Is strong in my soul.
I'll never know what makes the leaves to fall.
I'll never know what makes the grass so tall
I only know there ain't no love at all
Without a song.
