Salalah is the capital city of Oman's southern Zufar and Dhofar region. It is often considered to be the "second city" of the Sultanate, although some of this designation is probably due to its distinction as Sultan Qaboos' birthplace.
The region is famous for its khareef (monsoon), and the Khareef Festival is an annual event here. Many locals will in fact be quite surprised to see non-Arab visitors at other times of year.
Salalah and Dhofar are historically famous for the frankincense trade. The region has tended to be rather independent over history, although this has changed since Qaboos' ascention to the throne. The Jibbali (Arabic: those of the mountains) tribes maintain a slightly distrustful stance to the government in Muscat, although this is more a stance of custom than anything else. Interestingly, the tribes speak a different language to the Arabic spoken throughout the Peninsula, although visitors are unlikely to encounter it.

The old city is confined to the area called Haffa. The Haffa souq(market place) has wide range of collectables to offer: frankinsence, dates, handicrafts, souvenirs etc.You'll need to practice your bargaining skills before you go shopping there. Better would be to have a local resident accompany you while you shop, so you know you are paying for the real thing.
Salalah Gardens Mall, Besides Hamdan Plaza Hotel, This is the first modern shopping mall in Salalah and hosts branded shops, Carrefour, City Cinema and Food court
Al Baleed Archaeological Site, As Sultan Qaboos Street (Near Haffa and Dahariz areas). Its a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ruins of Al Baleed site are approachable by walking or taking a ride on the golf cart. There is a entry ticket of OMR 2 per vichle and OMR 0.5 per person for golf cart ride. Boat ridding option is also available. There is also a museum there called Frankincense Land Museum. The Museum hosts artifacts found at Al Baleed site, models for various types of boats and ships and information about Oman.

Thair Abud completes his Journey on Foot

A journey that began on foot nine and a half months ago has come to its finale for Thair Abud from Austria covering a distance of a little over 8,600 km that has brought him till Salalah. The second part of his journey is to fly to Jeddah and then onto Mecca. Thair walked through Oman for almost two months.
"If people want to walk they should come to Oman and walk because people would just come over and stop and provide me with water. It just meant I had to carry fewer water bottles in my back pack,” say Thair Abud.
According to him most striking places have been Muscat of course with the forts and old world charm, Ras al Hadd – I came across many turtles at night and I enjoyed being so close to nature, the sink hole near Quriyat, Wadi Shab, coming across snake marks in Sharqiya Sands, the kids jumping into the water from the Hanging Bridge of Sur, the tiger on the rocks as you reach Ras al Hadd, the sleeping snake under the sand – thankfully it was sleeping, the heart island I came across in a wadi after Ras al Madraka where he completed 8000km, the East of Maseerah Island where you can see the sun set on the sea, and of course the breath taking cliffs and hills of Dhofar Governorate. The mountains after Al Shuwamiya till Hasik are amazing.”
“I am in love with Oman and with its people,” concluded a beaming Thair.
Thair will fly to Jeddah on May 16th.

Dhofar Governorate
The Dhofar (Ẓufār) Governorate (Arabic محافطة ظفار) is the largest of the eleven Governorates in the Sultanate of Oman in terms of area. It lies in Southern Oman, on the eastern border with Yemen. It is a rather mountainous area that covers 99,300 km2 (38,300 sq mi) and has a population of 250,000 as of the 2010 census. The largest city, as well as capital of the Governorate, is Salalah. Historically the region was the chief source of frankincense in the world.
People
While Arabic speakers from the dominant Omani culture have come to live in the province, especially the larger cities and towns, Dhofar has been the traditional homeland of many tribespeople speaking a variety of South Arabian Semitic languages. One of the languages most commonly spoken by the Al-Hakli (Qara), Al-Shahri, Al-Barami, Al-Mashaiki and Al-Bat'hari mountain tribes is Jeballi (Shehri). The Yemeni language Mehri is somewhat linked to Jeballi. Other indigenous groups speaking smaller languages such as Bat'hari live in the coastal towns of Shuwaymiya and Sharbithat. The Harasis, speaking Harsusi, number 1,000–2,000 and live in Jiddat al-Harasis.

Thair Abud completes his Journey on Foot Lakshmi Kothaneth A journey that began on foot nine and a half months ago has come to its finale for Thair Abud from Austria covering a distance of a little over 8,600 km that has brought him till Salalah. The second part of his journey is to fly to Jeddah and then onto Mecca. Thair walked through Oman for almost two months. "If people want to walk they should come to Oman and walk because people would just come over and stop and provide me with water. It just meant I had to carry fewer water bottles in my back pack,” say Thair Abud. Salalah is the capital city of Oman's southern Zufar and Dhofar region. It is often considered to be the "second city" of the Sultanate, although some of this designation is probably due to its distinction as Sultan Qaboos' birthplace.
The region is famous for its khareef (monsoon), and the Khareef Festival is an annual event here. Many locals will in fact be quite surprised to see non-Arab visitors at other times of year.
Salalah and Dhofar are historically famous for the frankincense trade. The region has tended to be rather independent over history, although this has changed since Qaboos' ascention to the throne. The Jibbali (Arabic: those of the mountains) tribes maintain a slightly distrustful stance to the government in Muscat, although this is more a stance of custom than anything else. Interestingly, the tribes speak a different language to the Arabic spoken throughout the Peninsula, although visitors are unlikely to encounter it.

Better would be to have a local resident accompany you while you shop, so you know you are paying for the real thing.
Salalah Gardens Mall, Besides Hamdan Plaza Hotel, This is the first modern shopping mall in Salalah and hosts branded shops, Carrefour, City Cinema and Food court
Al Baleed Archaeological Site, As Sultan Qaboos Street (Near Haffa and Dahariz areas). Its a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ruins of Al Baleed site are approachable by walking or taking a ride on the golf cart. There is a entry ticket of OMR 2 per vichle and OMR 0.5 per person for golf cart ride. Boat ridding option is also available. There is also a museum there called Frankincense Land Museum. The Museum hosts artifacts found at Al Baleed site, models for various types of boats and ships and information about Oman.

According to him most striking places have been Muscat of course with the forts and old world charm, Ras al Hadd – I came across many turtles at night and I enjoyed being so close to nature, the sink hole near Quriyat, Wadi Shab, coming across snake marks in Sharqiya Sands, the kids jumping into the water from the Hanging Bridge of Sur, the tiger on the rocks as you reach Ras al Hadd, the sleeping snake under the sand – thankfully it was sleeping, the heart island I came across in a wadi after Ras al Madraka where he completed 8000km, the East of Maseerah Island where you can see the sun set on the sea, and of course the breath taking cliffs and hills of Dhofar Governorate. The mountains after Al Shuwamiya till Hasik are amazing.”
“I am in love with Oman and with its people,” concluded a beaming Thair.
Thair will fly to Jeddah on May 16th.

Two people died and as many as 17 people were shot at a Fort Myers, Fla. nightclub hosting a teen party in the early morning hours Monday, The Miami Herald reported via The New York Times. Gunfire erupted at The Swimsuit Glow Party at Club Blu around 12.30 a.m. where police found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot.
