Dehu

Dehu is a census town in Pune district in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Dehu had a population of 5340. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Dehu has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83% and, female literacy is 72%. In Dehu, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Dehu is very nice village.

Sant Tukaram

Dehu is a place of Sant Tukaram - well known sant in Maharashtra. He lived here and taught people how to pray to god. He and Sant Dnyaneshwar were the popular sants and both worshiped Lord Vitthal. The 'Palakhi' in the month of 'Ashadh' from Dehu is one of the main attractions of Dehu. Many people have taken part in it many years. Dehu is a place where the 'Abhang 'of Sant Tukaram can be remembered. One can see his temple here on the banks of the river. This temple was constructed by his younger son Narayanbaba in 1723. Various other temples nearby are worth seeing. A rock where Sant Tukaram was on fast is also here. Sant Tukaram will always be remembered for his Abhang and Gatha.

Tukaram

Tukaram was a 17th-century poet-saint of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. He was part of the egalitarian, personalized Varkari devotionalism tradition.

Tukaram is known for his Abhanga devotional poetry and community-oriented worship with spiritual songs known as kirtans. His poetry was devoted to Vitthala or Vithoba, an avatar of Hindu god Vishnu.

He is also referred to as Saint Tukaram, Bhakta Tukaram, Tukaram Maharaj, Tukoba and Tukobaraya.

Biography

The year of birth and death of Tukaram has been a subject of research and dispute among 20th-century scholars. He was either born in the year 1598 or 1608 in a village named Dehu, near Puṇe in Mahārāshtra, India.

Tukaram was born to Kanakar and Bolhoba More, and scholars consider his family to belong to the Kunbi (Shudra) caste. Despite being from a caste traditionally believed to be the laborers and tilling service providers, Tukaram's family owned a retailing and money-lending business as well as were engaged in agriculture and trade. His parents were devotees of Vithoba, an avatar of Hindu deity Vishnu (Vaishnavas). Both his parents died when Tukaram was a teenager.

Dehu Road

Dehu Road is a cantonment town in Pune district in the state of Maharashtra, India, and lies 27 km northwest of Pune Station along the NH4 Old Pune-Mumbai Highway which connects it to Pune city proper.

Geography

Dehu Road lies at an altitude of over 600 metres (2,000 ft), between two south-eastwardly flowing tributaries of the Bhima river, the Indrayani river to the north and the Pavana river to the south. Due to the elevation, the climate is pleasant.

It is surrounded by small towns including Vikas Nagar, Mamurdi, Ravet, Adarsh Nagar, Bapdev Nagar, Chincholi, Indrani Darshan, Kiwale, Sankalp Nagar, Sai Nagar, Gahunje, Barlota Nagar, Dutt Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Alkapuri, Ordnance Factory Staff Quarters, KV School Quarters, Garden City, Gandhi Nagar, Mehta Park, Sarvata Nagar, Baapdev Nagar, Thomas Colony, Shitla Nagar,Sankalp Nagari, Uttam Nagar, Srinagar, Mountbatan(MB) Camp, Kinhai, Zendemala, Siddharth Nagar, Shelarwadi, etc. Recent development in the Vikas Nagar area has made it one of the densest and fastest developing areas of the town. A new township is under construction at Ravet.
