Cézanne went to Paris in 1861 where he met Impressionist Camille Pissarro, and the two

This is the third of four presentations on Paul Cézanne. Cézanne, the great French post-impressionist painter, was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839. His marvelous use of design and color united in his paintings to help form a bridge between the impressionist painters and the new growing art form called cubism. Cézanne went to Paris in 1861 where he met Impressionist Camille Pissarro, and the two became friends. Cézanne's interest in simplifying forms to their natural essentials led to a number of fascinating studies -- landscapes, bathers, and portraits. Here are several of his still lifes, from skulls and fruit to flowers. He died in 1906 after suffering diabetes for 16 years. Music is "Fantasia de Fuego," played by guitarist Muriel Anderson.

Cezanne’s apple paintings appear to almost stand out from the canvas for the emphasis he puts on tones and colour shifts within. This oil painting demonstration, Still Life with Apples is not about precision regarding ellipses and perspectives, but pure colour. Hues appear to shimmer, objects almost seem to sit onto of each other without space between.
This demonstration required lots of flat colour but also some blending on the apples. Oil colours required are: titanium white, viridian, pthalo blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, burnt sienna and burnt umber. A red imprimatura was applied first to inject warmth into the painting.
The painting was completed alla prima in about an hour real time.

This is the last of four presentations on Paul Cézanne. Cézanne's interest in simplifying forms to their natural essentials led to a number of fascinating studies -- bathers, still lifes, and portraits. Here are several of his landscapes, including a full series in which a single mountain, Montagne Sainte-Victoire at Estaque, is featured. He died in 1906 after suffering diabetes for 16 years. Music is Claude DeBussy's "Claire de Lune," played by guitarist Julian Bream.

Serbian police have recovered a painting by the artist Paul Cezanne which was stolen from a museum in Zurich in 2008. "Boy in the Red Vest" is valued at $110 million
The Associated Press reports that the painting, "The Boy in the Red Vest," was stolen from a private Swiss museum in 2008, along with three other paintings by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Edgar Degas.
Zurich prosecutors said three men were arrested in Belgrade in connection with the robbery.

Cezanne's painting was worth 100 million Swiss francs (about $107 million), when it was taken from the EG Buhrle Collection.
Monet's "Poppy Field at Vetheuil" and Van Gogh's "Blooming Chestnut Branches" were found undamaged in a car parked at a mental hospital shortly after the heist.
The fourth, Degas' "Ludovic Lepic and His Daughter," has not been recovered. The masterpiece is worth 10 million francs ($11 million).

Paul Cézanne was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter who is with Gauguin and Van Gogh the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. His work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.
In his career, he became interested in working from direct observation and gradually developed a light, airy painting style that was to influence the Impressionists enormously. In Cézanne's mature work we see the development of a solidified, almost architectural style of painting. His often repetitive, sensitive and exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. Using planes of color and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields, at once both a direct expression of the sensations of the observing eye and an abstraction from observed nature, Cézanne's paintings convey intense study of his subjects, a searching gaze and a dogged struggle to deal with the complexity of human visual perception. His statement "I want to make of impressionism something solid and lasting like the art in the museums.

Cézanne's often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. The paintings convey Cézanne's intense study of his subjects.
Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of all.all."-----------------------------------------------------------

Balthus, the Polish-French modern classical artist
Balthus's style is primarily classical. His work shows numerous influences, including the writings of Emily Brontë, the writings and photography of Lewis Carroll, and the paintings of Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Simone Martini, Poussin, Jean-Étienne Liotard, Joseph Reinhardt, Géricault, Ingres, Goya, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Courbet, Edgar Degas, Félix Vallotton and Paul Cézanne. Although his technique and compositions were inspired by pre-renaissance painters, there also are eerie intimations of contemporary surrealists like de Chirico. Painting the figure at a time when figurative art was largely ignored, he is widely recognised as an important 20th-century artist.

Paul Cézanne (19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavour to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.
Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of us all."
