See lyrics translated into English below.
Soprano Renee Fleming sings this aria. Dvorak's composition relies upon expansive arpeggiated chords to capture the fairy tale ambiance of Rusalka. The amicable old Spirit of the Lake, Jezibab, is enjoying the singing of the Wood Nymphs, when his daughter, Rusalka, sadly approaches him. She admits that she has fallen in love with a handsome prince. Year

Antonín Dvořák spent the years between 1892 - 1895 working in America as the Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. It was during this time that he wrote Symphony No. 9, "From the new World". This symphony was the one that brought him the most resounding success in 1893 when it was first performed. He was sending "notes" back to his friends and famiy in Czechoslovakia from the New World, America.
The Symphony No. 9 in E Minor "From the New World", Op. 95, B. 178, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 during his visit to the United States from 1892 to 1895. It is by far his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular in the modern repertoire. In older literature and recordings this symphony is often indicated as Symphony No. 5
Dvořák was interested in the Native American music and African-American spirituals he heard in America. Upon his arrival in America, he stated:
"I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition, to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them."
The symphony was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, and premiered on December 16, 1893, at Carnegie Hall conducted by Anton Seidl. A day earlier, in an article published in the New York Herald on December 15, 1893, Dvořák further explained how Native American music had been an influence on this symphony:
"I have not actually used any of the [Native American] melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour."
In the same article, Dvořák stated that he regarded the symphony's second movement as a "sketch or study for a later work, either a cantata or opera ... which will be based upon Longfellow's [The Song of] Hiawatha" (Dvořák never actually wrote such a piece). He also wrote that the third movement scherzo was "suggested by the scene at the feast in Hiawatha where the Indians dance".
Curiously enough, passages which modern ears perceive as the musical idiom of African-American spirituals may have been intended by Dvořák to evoke a Native American atmosphere. In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvořák as saying "I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical", and that "the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland". Most historians agree that Dvořák is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.
In a 2008 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, prominent musicologist Joseph Horowitz asserts that African-american spirituals were a major influence on the ninth symphony, quoting Dvořák from an 1893 interview in the New York Herald as saying, "In the negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music."
Despite all this, it is generally considered that, like other Dvořák pieces, the work has more in common with folk music of his native Bohemia than with that of the United States. Leonard Bernstein averred that the work was truly multinational in its foundations.
The anthem of the Bureau of International Expositions was extracted from the starting part of the fourth movement of the symphony.

Yearning to know the bliss of union with him, she wishes to become human. Deeply saddened, the Spirit of the Lake consents to her request, and leaves. All alone, Rusalka sings this magnificent aria and shares the secrets of her longing to the moon.
Featuring the paintings and artwork of William Bouguereau, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, J.W. Waterhouse, Armand Guillaumin, and Spadecaller.
Lyrics (translation)
Silver moon upon the deep dark sky,
Through the vast night pierce your rays.
This sleeping world you wander by,
Smiling on man's homes and ways.
Oh moon ere past you glide, tell me,
Tell me, oh where does my loved one bide?
Oh moon ere past you glide, tell me
Tell me, oh where does my loved one bide?
Tell him, oh tell him, my silver moon,
Mine are the arms that shall hold him,
That between waking and sleeping he may
Think of the love that enfolds him,
May between waking and sleeping
Think of the love that enfolds him.
Light his path far away, light his path,
Tell him, oh tell him who does for him stay!
Human soul, should it dream of me, Let my memory wakened be.
Moon, moon, oh do not wane, do not wane,
Moon, oh moon, do not wane....

Hidden treasures - Antonín Dvořák - Serenade for strings in E major (1876) - II. Tempo di valse

Quote: "The serenade is the earliest of Dvorak's compositions in which a detached listener is likely to discover enchantment". - Gervase Hughes.
History (based on materials from Misha Rachlevsky's program notes for the Chamber Orchestra "Kremlin"): 1875 was a particularly happy time and a turning point for the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (1841-1901): he finally married his former piano student, Anna Cermakova, their first child (out of the six who survived beyond infancy) was soon born and, after years of financial difficulties, he was steadily employed as the organist of one of Prague's churches, a position which allowed him to document his poverty at the City Hall. With these papers and a stack of recent scores (in particular, the Fifth Symphony and the Moravian duets) in tow, Dvorak applied for a government grant. A distinguished jury which included Johannes Brahms, the young composer's idol and one of his greatest champions in later years, did not fail to recognize the "genuine and original gift" of Dvorak, and a recommendation to the Minister of Culture enabled the latter to receive the highest stipend available under the program which lead to a bout of compositional inspiration. One of the resulting works was the Serenade for strings, allegedly written in a matter of ten days, the chamber qualities of which allowed Dvorak to practice in a genre that allowed for the provision of pleasure and entertainment. The piece was premiered in Prague on the 10th of December, 1876, by Adolf Čech and the combined orchestras of the Czech and German theatres and was promptly published in 1877 in the composer's piano duet arrangement and in 1879 in the original orchestral version.
Music: While the whole serenade is a unified stream of the utmost gentility, I've ultimately decided to post solely the second movement - a particularly handsome waltz - which constitutes, for me, the height of Dvorak's inspiration in the piece. The movement is remarkably simple in execution yet all the more striking in its freshness. From a dramatic point of view, it is a series of elegant dances, suggesting, in its juxtaposition of emotional unsteadiness and genuine ardor, a meeting between two lovers on the dance floor. The piece is built around the familiar ABA construct with a few surprising touches. The A section is divided into two contrasting segments. First, an elegant, vaguely agitated and even melancholic principal motive that is stated by the first violins and then repeated three times with light ornamentation (in particular, its second half is elaborated by the progressive addition of a new note, moving from duplet to quadruplet), while the remaining forces play the booming bass line, suggesting the dancers' feet clicking on the floor (0:08). The section is restated complete (0:28), overflowing into the second segment which opens with broad descending passages (0:48) before moving, after a playful violin rise (1:01), to a charming (though a hint frantic) polka, played by the second violins and the cellos (1:04) with the remaining instruments slowly adding their voices, gradually elaborating and augmenting the material. Just as earlier, the segment is repeated without changes (1:13). A series of bold violin runs lead into a repeat of the first two phrases of the principal waltz (1:36) which is then slowly deconstructed by the violins and cellos in the subsequent coda (1:50). Two fortissimo chords herald the beginning of the B section, an altogether more introverted experience, a trio for violins, playing extended lyric lines, violas and cellos, doubling and echoing the violins' ardent cantabile (2:05). The music slowly grows into an impassioned romanza, delicately contrasting the pizzicatos of the cellos and the high-flying line of the violins (2:25), an episode very much in the style of Tchaikovsky. Once again, the section is restated complete (2:47). This moment of pure serenity is set against a much more emotionally unhinged agitato, moving from ornamental lines passed between the various strings (3:29) to a surprising return to the thematic material of the A section in the quadruplets of the first violins over the long lines of violas/cellos (3:57), ultimately reaching a restatement of the main lyric theme of the B section (4:24). Finally, we return to the principal waltz for just one statement of each musical segment (5:05). Though perhaps one does wish for a certain variety in the recapitulations of the main themes, Dvorak's creation is one of the loveliest waltzes that I've had the pleasure of encountering for a while.

Dvořák began to work on his second symphony just four months after finishing the first. Both first and second have a very similar character. Promising invention which prefigure genial author but also big lengthy passages that causes poor structure.

Antonín Dvořák wrote his Symphony No.1 in C minor at twenty-four years of age without having any compositional experience. It is evident that he wanted to test his strength and knowledge on this form. Unfortunetely this symphony was never performed during Dvořák's life. It has been lost for long time. The symphony was premiered in October 1936 by conductor Milan Sachs with the orchestra of the Provincial Theatre in Brno (Ludvík Kašpárek).

Antonín Dvořák's youthful Piano Concerto in G minor, op. 33, has received less attention than his beloved Concertos for Violin and Cello. It was prominently revived in the 1940s by Czech pianist Rudolf Firkušný, himself a friend of Dvořák's son-in-law Josef Suk and pupil of Dvořák's associate Vilém Kurz (who extensively re-wrote sections of the piece, a source of some controversy). Sara Davis Buechner, who studied the work with Firkušný during her years as his Juilliard pupil from 1980 - 84, performs the work in its original version here.

Czech Philharmonic | Jiří Bělohlávek
The complete Dvořák Symphonies for the first time as a filmed cycle.
Antonín Dvořák stands alongside Smetana as a founder of the new Czech music. His nine symphonies show Dvořák to be a thoroughly individual and original composer whose symphonic concepts and wealth of musical expression are often surprising. All the symphonies in this cycle were performed in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague, one of Europe’s oldest and loveliest concert halls. The edition features a documentation of Dvořák’s life and symphonic achievement. Jiří Bělohlávek visits important places in the composer’s life, interviews experts and key figures. With an introduction to each symphony by Jiří Bělohlávek.

African-American spirituals were a major influence on Dvořák's music written in America, quoting him from an 1893 interview in the New York Herald as saying, "In the negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music." Dvořák stated:
I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition, to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them

SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME
Quand ma vieille mère
m’apprenait à chanter,
c’était étrange comme souvent,
bien souvent elle larmoyait.
Et à présent de pleurs moi aussi
je creuse mes joues brunies,
quand aux enfants tziganes j’apprends
la musique et le chant!
When my old mother
taught me to sing,
it was strange that often,
often she would cry.
And now I also torment
my tanned cheeks with tears,
when I teach gypsy children
to play and sing.
Als die alte Mutter
Mich noch lehrte singen,
Tränen in den Wimpern
Gar so oft ihr hingen.
Jetzt, wo ich die Kleinen
Selber üb’ im Sange,
Rieselt’s mir vom Auge,
Rieselt’s oft mir auf die braune Wange!

The opening song of the concert for Patrícia was a famous composition by Antonín Dvořák.
"Když mne stará matka" is originally a song for voice and piano written in 1880. It is the fourth of seven songs from his cycle "Cigánské melodie" ("Gypsy Songs"), B. 104, Op. 55. The Gypsy Songs are set to poems by Adolf Heyduk in both Czech and German. This song, in particular, has achieved widespread fame. Enjoy this beautiful rendition by Patrícia and the Orchester Camerata Janáček, conducted by Rastislav Štúr, best in HD!

LYRICS: Když Mne Stará Matka
Když mne stará matka zpívat učívala,
podivno, že často, často slzívala.
A ted' také pláčem snědé líce mučím,
když cigánské děti hrát a zpívat učím!

ANTONIN DVORAK.-
Trio en Fa menor Op 65 piano, violín, cello.
Allegro Ma Non Troppo
Allegretto Grazioso
Poco Adagio
Allegro Con Brio
Piano: Martin Helmchen
Violín: Christian Tetzlaff
Violoncello: Marie-Elisabeth Hecker
