As tensions of the cold war mounted, the US and USSR sparked a historic space race. Both nations vowing to out perform each other. Desperate to claim victory where nations willing to sacrifice human life??
Is the world's first cosmonaut, still up there?
USA and the USSR two super powers competing for the prize of space. The competition was Fierce, often leaving safety as a second thought. Due to the discrete and secret nature of the USSR space program, rumours and stories began circulating of cover ups and disasters. Many involving failed launches which resulted in space travellers dying on the launch pad or in orbit
One of the key pieces of evidence are audio recordings, Two Italian Brothers, Achille and Giovanni Judica-Cordiglia. The two radio enthusiasts constructed an amateur radio station and began picking up transmissions from space. The two brothers recorded key moments in space history including Gagarin's first flight. They also claimed to captured some of the most haunting recordings in the history of space.
On The 28th November 1960, The brothers had intercepted a radio single, as no official launches where scheduled the two men assumed it was a satellite. After an hour of static a distant sound cracked through the radio. Morse code for SOS, what was most strange about the distressed radio single that it wasn't orbiting the earth, but slowly moving away. The SOS faded into space and out of radio range

Vladimir's capsule malfunctioned, crashing him into China where He was held prisoner of over a year. Was Vladimir's flight scrubbed from the history books to save the reputation of the USSR? When the Collapse of the USSR occurred in 1991 many documents and official records of the space program remained unaccounted for. While many experts question the authenticity of the recordings and the stories of lost cosmonauts. It still remains one of the darkest secrets of the cold war

U.S. listening posts in Turkey hear him , angry, desperate, in tears - .the end was closing in on him.
The Cosmonauts, Vladimir Kamarov and Soviet hero Yuri Gagarin, the first human to reach outer space. The two men were close; they socialized, hunted and drank together.
In 1967, both men were assigned to the same Earth-orbiting mission, and both knew the space capsule was not safe to fly. Komarov told friends he knew he would probably die. But he wouldn't back out because he didn't want Gagarin to die. Gagarin would have been his replacement.
The story begins around 1967, when Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union, decided to stage a spectacular midspace rendezvous between two Soviet spaceships.
The plan was to launch a capsule, the Soyuz 1, with Komarov inside. The next day, a second vehicle would take off, with two additional cosmonauts; the two vehicles would meet, dock, Komarov would crawl from one vehicle to the other, exchanging places with a colleague, and come home in the second ship. It would be, Brezhnev hoped, a Soviet triumph on the 50th anniversary of the Communist revolution. Brezhnev made it very clear he wanted this to happen.
The problem was Gagarin. Already a Soviet hero, the first man ever in space, he and some senior technicians had inspected the Soyuz 1 and had found 203 structural problems — serious problems that would make this machine dangerous to navigate in space. The mission, Gagarin suggested, should be postponed.
He'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him.

The question was: Who would tell Brezhnev? Gagarin wrote a 10-page memo and gave it to his best friend in the KGB, Venyamin Russayev, but nobody dared send it up the chain of command. Everyone who saw that memo, including Russayev, was demoted, fired or sent to diplomatic Siberia. With less than a month to go before the launch, Komarov realized postponement was not an option. He met with Russayev, the now-demoted KGB agent, and said, "I'm not going to make it back from this flight."
Russayev asked, Why not refuse? According to the authors, Komarov answered: "If I don't make this flight, they'll send the backup pilot instead." That was Yuri Gagarin. Vladimir Komarov couldn't do that to his friend. "That's Yura," the book quotes him saying, "and he'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him." Komarov then burst into tears.
On launch day, April 23, 1967, a Russian journalist, Yaroslav Golovanov, reported that Gagarin showed up at the launch site and demanded to be put into a spacesuit, though no one was expecting him to fly. Golovanov called this behavior "a sudden caprice," though afterward some observers thought Gagarin was trying to muscle onto the flight to save his friend. The Soyuz left Earth with Komarov on board.
Once the Soyuz began to orbit the Earth, the failures began. Antennas didn't open properly. Power was compromised. Navigation proved difficult. The next day's launch had to be canceled. And worse, Komarov's chances for a safe return to Earth were dwindling fast.
All the while, U.S. intelligence was listening in. The National Security Agency had a facility at an Air Force base near Istanbul. Previous reports said that U.S. listeners knew something was wrong - VERY wrong!

An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the terms are sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.
Until 2002, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military, or by civilian space agencies. With the sub-orbital flight of the privately funded SpaceShipOne in 2004, a new category of astronaut was created: the commercial astronaut.
The criteria for what constitutes human spaceflight vary. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) Sporting Code for astronautics recognizes only flights that exceed an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 mi). In the United States, professional, military, and commercial astronauts who travel above an altitude of 50 miles (80 km) are awarded astronaut wings.
As of June 20, 2011, a total of 523 people from 38 countries have reached 100 km (62 mi) or more in altitude, of which 520 reached low Earth orbit or beyond. Of these, 24 people have traveled beyond Low Earth orbit, to either lunar or trans-lunar orbit or to the surface of the moon; three of the 24 did so twice: Jim Lovell, John Young and Eugene Cernan. The three astronauts who have not reached low Earth orbit are Joe Walker, Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie.

The story begins around 1967, when Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union, decided to stage a spectacular midspace rendezvous between two Soviet spaceships. The plan was to launch a capsule, the Soyuz 1, with Komarov inside. The next day, a second vehicle would take off, with two additional cosmonauts; the two vehicles would meet, dock, Komarov would crawl from one vehicle to the other, exchanging places with a colleague, and come home in the second ship. It would be, Brezhnev hoped, a Soviet triumph on the 50th anniversary of the Communist revolution. Brezhnev made it very clear he wanted this to happen. The problem was Gagarin. Already a Soviet hero, the first man ever in space, he and some senior technicians had inspected the Soyuz 1 and had found 203 structural problems — serious problems that would make this machine dangerous to navigate in space. The mission, Gagarin suggested, should be postponed. He'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him. - Komarov talking about Gagarin The question was: Who would tell Brezhnev? Gagarin wrote a 10-page memo and gave it to his best friend in the KGB, Venyamin Russayev, but nobody dared send it up the chain of command. Everyone who saw that memo, including Russayev, was demoted, fired or sent to diplomatic Siberia. With less than a month to go before the launch, Komarov realized postponement was not an option. He met with Russayev, the now-demoted KGB agent, and said, "I'm not going to make it back from this flight." Russayev asked, Why not refuse? According to the authors, Komarov answered: "If I don't make this flight, they'll send the backup pilot instead." That was Yuri Gagarin. Vladimir Komarov couldn't do that to his friend. "That's Yura," the book quotes him saying, "and he'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him." Komarov then burst into tears. On launch day, April 23, 1967, a Russian journalist, Yaroslav Golovanov, reported that Gagarin showed up at the launch site and demanded to be put into a spacesuit, though no one was expecting him to fly. Golovanov called this behavior "a sudden caprice," though afterward some observers thought Gagarin was trying to muscle onto the flight to save his friend. The Soyuz left Earth with Komarov on board. Once the Soyuz began to orbit the Earth, the failures began. Antennas didn't open properly. Power was compromised. Navigation proved difficult. The next day's launch had to be canceled. And worse, Komarov's chances for a safe return to Earth were dwindling fast. All the while, U.S. intelligence was listening in. The National Security Agency had a facility at an Air Force base near Istanbul. Previous reports said that U.S. listeners knew something was wrong - VERY wrong! Source: - NPR -

USA and the USSR two super powers competing for the prize of space. The competition was Fierce, often leaving safety as a second thought. Due to the discrete and secret nature of the USSR space program, rumours and stories began circulating of cover ups and disasters. Many involving failed launches which resulted in space travellers dying on the launch pad or in orbit
One of the key pieces of evidence are audio recordings, Two Italian Brothers, Achille and Giovanni Judica-Cordiglia. The two radio enthusiasts constructed an amateur radio station and began picking up transmissions from space. The two brothers recorded key moments in space history including Gagarin's first flight. They also claimed to captured some of the most haunting recordings in the history of space.
On The 28th November 1960, The brothers had intercepted a radio single, as no official launches where scheduled the two men assumed it was a satellite. After an hour of static a distant sound cracked through the radio. Morse code for SOS, what was most strange about the distressed radio single that it wasn't orbiting the earth, but slowly moving away. The SOS faded into space and out of radio range
February 2nd the brothers continue to scan Russian frequencies when they

The most haunting recording captured by the brothers was sounds of a female cosmonaut burning up on re-entry in 1963
Concealing secrets was quite common practice in the Soviet Space program. Cosmonauts where known to be airbrushed out of photos.
The soviets kept their launches secret, Gagarin's accomplishment was only publicized when he returned safely. Vladimir Ilyushin a soviet test pilot was rumored to have beat Gagarin to space by five days. However his return to earth wasn't as successful as Gagarin's. Vladimir's capsule malfunctioned, crashing him into China where He was held prisoner of over a year. Was Vladimir's flight scrubbed from the history books to save the reputation of the USSR? It was a secret Vladimir took to the grave
When the Collapse of the USSR occurred in 1991 many documents and official records of the space program remained unaccounted for. While many experts question the authenticity of the recordings and the stories of lost cosmonauts. It still remains one of the darkest secrets of the cold war

Concealing secrets was quite common practice in the Soviet Space program. Cosmonauts where known to be airbrushed out of photos.
The soviets kept their launches secret, Gagarin's accomplishment was only publicized when he returned safely. Vladimir Ilyushin a soviet test pilot was rumored to have beat Gagarin to space by five days. However his return to earth wasn't as successful as Gagarin's. Vladimir's capsule malfunctioned, crashing him into China where He was held prisoner of over a year. Was Vladimir's flight scrubbed from the history books to save the reputation of the USSR? Convinced he will never make it back to Earth; he's talking to Alexei Kosygin — then a high official of the Soviet Union.
The space vehicle is shoddily constructed, running dangerously low on fuel; its parachutes — though no one knows this — won't work
U.S. listening posts in Turkey hear him , angry, desperate, in tears - .the end was closing in on him.
The Cosmonauts, Vladimir Kamarov and Soviet hero Yuri Gagarin, the first human to reach outer space. The two men were close; they socialized, hunted and drank together.
In 1967, both men were assigned to the same Earth-orbiting mission, and both knew the space capsule was not safe to fly. Komarov told friends he knew he would probably die. But he wouldn't back out because he didn't want Gagarin to die. Gagarin would have been his replacement.
The story begins around 1967, when Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union, decided to stage a spectacular midspace rendezvous between two Soviet spaceships.
The plan was to launch a capsule, the Soyuz 1, with Komarov inside. The next day, a second vehicle would take off, with two additional cosmonauts; the two vehicles would meet, dock, Komarov would crawl from one vehicle to the other, exchanging places with a colleague, and come home in the second ship. It would be, Brezhnev hoped, a Soviet triumph on the 50th anniversary of the Communist revolution. Brezhnev made it very clear he wanted this to happen.
The problem was Gagarin. Already a Soviet hero, the first man ever in space, he and some senior technicians had inspected the Soyuz 1 and had found 203 structural problems — serious problems that would make this machine dangerous to navigate in space. The mission, Gagarin suggested, should be postponed.
He'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him.

The question was: Who would tell Brezhnev? Gagarin wrote a 10-page memo and gave it to his best friend in the KGB, Venyamin Russayev, but nobody dared send it up the chain of command. Everyone who saw that memo, including Russayev, was demoted, fired or sent to diplomatic Siberia. With less than a month to go before the launch, Komarov realized postponement was not an option. He met with Russayev, the now-demoted KGB agent, and said, "I'm not going to make it back from this flight."
Russayev asked, Why not refuse? According to the authors, Komarov answered: "If I don't make this flight, they'll send the backup pilot instead." That was Yuri Gagarin. Vladimir Komarov couldn't do that to his friend. "That's Yura," the book quotes him saying, "and he'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him." Komarov then burst into tears.
On launch day, April 23, 1967, a Russian journalist, Yaroslav Golovanov, reported that Gagarin showed up at the launch site and demanded to be put into a spacesuit, though no one was expecting him to fly. Golovanov called this behavior "a sudden caprice," though afterward some observers thought Gagarin was trying to muscle onto the flight to save his friend. The Soyuz left Earth with Komarov on board.
Once the Soyuz began to orbit the Earth, the failures began. Antennas didn't open properly. Power was compromised. Navigation proved difficult. The next day's launch had to be canceled. And worse, Komarov's chances for a safe return to Earth were dwindling fast.
All the while, U.S. intelligence was listening in. The National Security Agency had a facility at an Air Force base near Istanbul. Previous reports said that U.S. listeners knew something was wrong - VERY wrong!
