One thousand five hundred delegates of the People’s National Convention (PNC) will  converge on the Jubilee Park in Wa, the Upper West regional capital today, to elect a flag bearer for the party for the 2016 general election.

Also to be elected at the Seventh National Delegates Congress of the party are the National Chairman and his Vice, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Treasurer, National Women’s Organiser and National Youth Organiser.

The event will take place despite the inability of the Accra High Court yesterday to hear a suit which is challenging the candidacy of one the national chairman aspirants, Mr Bernard Mornah, who is presently the General Secretary.

The plaintiffs — Mr David Apasera, Mr Abubakar Sadiq Kwashie Ebla and Mr Henry Haruna — wanted the court to disqualify Mr Mornah from the race for allegedly issuing a dud cheque to the party while filing his nomination.

No show

But when the parties in the case, including the current National Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan and Mr Bernard Mornah, appeared in court yesterday, it was realised that the case had rather been listed to be heard on December 18, 2015.

The court, presided over by Mrs Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Assah, said the defence team was trying to “pull a surprise on the court” and would, therefore, not assume jurisdiction over the case.

It, therefore, ordered the two parties to see the registrar of the court to clarify the matter to ensure that the proper thing was done.

We’ll go ahead

Speaking to the media after the court’s sitting, Alhaji Ramadan said the party had made arrangements to go ahead with the congress.

“Per our programme, the congress begins on Friday and continues on Saturday to Sunday. Though we have not been heard by the court, we believe that we are right and the congress is likely to come on, and we are moving to the congress grounds from the court,” he stated.

Asked if going ahead with the congress would not amount to contempt, he retorted “nothing like this has been brought to our attention so we believe there is the opportunity to go to the congress.”

Readiness

To show its readiness for the congress, all the principal streets of Wa have been adorned in PNC paraphernalia, flags and banners, reports Emmanuel Modey from Wa.

Pictures of the candidates contesting the various executive positions are also on display, while the various FM stations are inundated with jingles.

When the Daily Graphic visited the streets, including the Jubilee Park, delegates dressed in the colours of the party who had arrived from various parts of the country were all engaged in one activity or another to ensure a memorable event.
