Chicago - Illinois Travel Guide, Tourism, Vacation
Often called the 'Windy City', Chicago is number one when it comes to culture, fine dining, shopping and commerce.
This is the home of blues and jazz, where early masters like, Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Noone, Johnny Dodds, Earl Hines, and Jelly Roll Morton, honed their skills; the city where skyscrapers were born and now pierce the sky in their dozens, where trains found their centre and airlines soon followed. Chicago is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest, dynamic cities -- confident, thriving, innovative -- and yet it still offers buckets of genuine Midwestern friendliness.
Situated on Lake Michigan, incomparable architecture erupts from its western shores. The Downtown area is known as the 'Loop' since the raised metropolitan railway (known as the 'El' or 'L') circles the central business and shopping district. Just east of it is Michigan Avenue, an upscale shopping area a few blocks from the lake.
Chicagoans are friendly, hard-working and serious sports fans. There's the Chicago Bears for football fans, Chicago Bulls for basketball followers, Chicago Blackhawks for hockey lovers and Chicago Cubs for baseball enthusiasts.
Festivals, theatre, dance, art, music, including a world-class symphony and great jazz, make Chicago a city of culture. An extensive French Impressionist collection puts Art Institute on the world map. Famous architects, such as Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright and his Prairie School of Architecture thrived here. Chicago is home to the Reliance Building (now Hotel Burnham), the first steel-framed skyscraper as well as the Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower), one of the world's tallest buildings.
A newer addition, Millennium Park is the setting for inspired works by Frank Gehry, Jaume Plensa and Anish Kapoor. But this is the city where innovation is rife -- Chicago gave birth to the refrigerated rail car, mail order shopping, car radio and the tv remote control. But of course, one of its most jaw dropping legacies has been the skyscraper - the nation's first was built here, a 10-story, Home Insurance Building, constructed in1884.
But this city is not all concrete and glass. Over 50 languages are spoken in this culturally and religiously diverse metropolis. Chicago's distinctive neighbours reflect its ethnic diversity. Chicago's Chinatown is vibrant, while Irish communities congregate around the Far Southwest Side, rubbing shoulders with Mexicans and Poles. Meanwhile, Indian restaurants and shops add colour to Devon Street; Lawrence Avenue has been dubbed Seoul Drive for its Korean residents, while Vietnamese, Thais, Persians, Little Italy and Greektown all add to the rich tapestry of life in the Windy City.
This is worlds away from almost a century before when during the Prohibition era, Chicago's criminal world, represented by the likes of Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, and later Sam Giancana, practically ran the city.Today, gangster-themed tours and themed memorabilia are all that remain from this notorious past.
In a city that constantly evolves, Mark Twain hit the nail on the head when he said in the 19th century: "It is hopeless for the occasional visitor to try to keep up with Chicago. She outgrows his prophecies faster than he can make them." Over a century later, this is still very much true.

Chicago, once a small trading post on Lake Michigan, has grown into one of the country’s most famous cities. Visit “The Windy City” and chow down on deep dish pizza for a truly unique vacation experience.
Follow “The Loop,” the city’s primary business district, and marvel at its array of high-rise buildings, consulates, and universities. Shopping and fine dining abound in this area. If you’ve worn yourself out in the city proper, set a more sedate pace at the Riverwalk, a pedestrian path along the Chicago River, or visit the many museums and parks the city has to offer. You’ll never believe you’re actually downtown when you walk through the Garfield Park Conservatory, and the Art Institute of Chicago will allow you to appreciate creative works from around the world.
No Chicago tour is complete without a mention of the nightlife, so close out your day at a jazz lounge and let the sweet sound of music carry you away. Visit our Chicago travel guide and plan your next vacation today.

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. Sydney's urban area is in a coastal basin, which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Blue Mountains to the west, the Hawkesbury River to the north and the Royal National Park to the south.
The most important places to visit in Sydney are: Sydney Opera House (among the world's most recognized landmarks. Set on the Sydney harbor, it is an unforgettable sight), Sydney Harbor Bridge (simply called "the bridge" by locals, courageous ones can even climb up the bridge), Bronte Beach (lesser known than Bondi, it is a beautiful beach, popular amongst families), Blue Mountains (an unspoiled mountain range filled with Eucalyptus trees. It is located 30 miles from Sydney, and there are plenty of hiking trails), Bondi Beach (Sydney's most famous beach, its lively promenade is as exciting as the beach) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Sydney travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

The following travel video is a comprehensive list of the best 35 Things to do in Chicago including all of the top Attractions worth visiting and seeing in this complete travel guide for the Windy City.
Many people don't realize this but Chicago is a world class city with festivals, arts, entertainment, dining and architecture that can rival any city in North America or even Europe. The only other city that I think can compare with Chicago - in terms of attractions - in America is New York. Whether you're scarfing down Chicago style deep dish pizza or taking in a Blues festival you'll find no shortage of things to do in the city. If you're a sport fan there are no shortage of professional teams to follow at any time of the year including the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls. When you're thinking of destination to travel to in the United States, Chicago should be near the top of your list. I guarantee that you'll have a lot of fun:
1) Chicago Architecture and Chicago River Walk
2) Chicago River Boat Trip
3) Kayaking along the Chicago River
4) Cloud Gate - The Bean
5) Millennium Park
6) Pavilion 'Free Shows'
7) Art Institute of Chicago
8) Watch a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field
9) Eat Deep Dish Pizza
10) Visit the sky deck at Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower)
11) Stroll around the University of Chicago campus
12) Check out the Oriental Institute of History
13) Marvel and escape the bustle at Osaka Garden
14) Enjoy an afternoon or evening at Wicker Park
15) Relax and escape at Humboldt Park
16) Check out the Dinosaur exhibits at the Chicago Field Museum
17) Visit the Shedd Aquarium - the largest indoor one in the world
18) Watch a Chicago Blackhawks game at the United Center
19) Check out the 'Borders' exhibit at Solti Gardens of Grant Park
20) Admire Buckingham Fountain during the day or at night
21) View the Chicago skyline from the Hancock Center
22) Spend an afternoon having fun at Navy Pier
23) Wander around Lincoln Park Zoo and Conservatory
24) Work out or get a tan at North Avenue Beach
25) Laugh your head off watching improv at The Second City
26) Test your mind playing the Zombie Game
27) Go shopping or people watching along the Magnificent Mile
28) Take the Chicago 'El or 'L' CTA metro system
29) Watch an NFL football game (Chicago Bears) at Soldier Field
30) Check out the entirely free Money Museum
31) Ride a bicycle in downtown Chicago
32) Spend time at the Museum of Science and Technology
33) Marvel at the architectural wonder known as Robbie House
34) Rest your legs by taking a Chicago city tour by Segway
35) Check out a performance at Chicago Theatre
We got to see buildings like Marina City, Trump Tower, and Wrigley Building. Architecture river tours are a fun way to take in the sights along the river. If you find yourself here during the summer months kayaking is a popular way to experience the Chicago River. The Crown Fountain is a cool interactive sculpture located in Millennium Park. Art lovers will enjoy the Art Institute of Chicago. Taking in a Chicago Cubs baseball game at Wrigley field is a must for anyone who visits the city. You can't come to Chicago and not eat deep-dish pizza! During our week here we ate at many pizzerias in town including Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, Gino's East Side, and Pizzeria Uno. Formerly known as the Sears Tower, Willis Tower is now the 2nd tallest building in the United States. Many of the buildings at the University of Chicago were designed in the Gothic style. The campus is also home to the Oriental Institute. The Osaka Garden is located in Jackson Park
which is in Chicago's South Side. If you visit Wicker Park you'll find it has a very hipster feel, with lots of street art down every alley. Humboldt Park is a little far removed from the downtown area so it's not as popular with visitors, however, it's a really great place to soak in nature. For a chance to come face to face with dinosaurs, head over to the Field Museum. Right next door is the Shedd Aquarium which is a popular attraction for families. Visit the John Hancock Center by night as the city really dazzles from the 94th floor. The Navy Pier is a fun place to visit on a weekend including a Ferris Wheel. Located in the north end of the city, North Avenue Beach is a popular hangout spot with beach-goers. For improv comedy there's no better place than The Second City. The Magnificent Mile is a shopper's paradise. The Chicago L, or the elevated line, is great for getting around town. A week pass is $28. The Divvy is Chicago's bike sharing system. Chicago's Museum of Science and Technology is the largest science museum. It's hard to miss the flashing lights of the historic Chicago Theatre! Music has creative commons attribution license:

Boat tours
One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the city as well as learn about it is from the water. Such excursions operate from May to early November, but it is best to check with the individual sightseeing company for schedules and costs. Chicago Line Cruises runs both history and architectural boat trips. Boats departing from Navy Pier run the gamut from schooners to yachts and those that include meals and cocktails. Windy I or Windy II set sail around Lake Michigan. Or you can paddle a kayak down the Chicago River with Wateriders and explore history, architecture or gangster history.
Bus tours
There are plenty of road-based options for touring the city. Gray Line Tours runs a variety of city excursions including 'North' and 'South' side city tours, which cover all the major sights in those parts of the city. Buses leave from 55 East Monroe Street. The Chicago Double Decker Co., based at the Willis Tower, offers double-decker service, using London-style double-decker buses to tour 21km (13 miles) of Chicago's main sights. A hop-on hop-off service (explore a site and catch another bus to resume the tour) stops at a number of points, including Navy Pier, Willis Tower, the Art Institute and Field Museum.
Chicago Greeters tours
Considered a 'themed visit' rather than a tour, Chicago Greeters will escort small groups (up to six) to attractions, neighbourhoods, explore insider's favourite haunts, visit specific points of interest, or even take them shopping. Greeters are residents who know and love the city. Advance reservations are necessary for this free service of the Chicago Office of Tourism.
Gangster and ghost tours
The Untouchables Gangster Tour takes a step back to the days of prohibition. It traces the paths of some of the city's most infamous 1920s and 1930s residents, like Al Capone and John Dillinger. Wisecracking guides relate gangster lore on the way to famous hoodlum haunts like Little Italy and the St Valentine's Massacre. All tours depart from 600 North Clark Street, and reservations are necessary.
Chicago Hauntings visits paranormal and supernatural locations around the city. A two-hour 45-minute bus ride explores such haunts as the Biograph Theater, Graceland Cemetery, and the site of the Fort Dearborn massacre. Reservations are necessary.
Walking tours
Chicago is known for its architecture and there is no better way to learn about the city's structural designs than by taking one of the many tours that the Chicago Architectural Foundation offers. Tours, which are on foot, by bus and on the water, include historic and modern skyscrapers as well as Frank Lloyd Wright homes. Except for the water tours, most begin at 224 South Michigan Avenue.

Cantigny
The 202-hectare (500-acre) estate of legendary Chicago Tribune editor and publisher from 1925-1955, Colonel Robert R McCormick, is one of the far west suburbs' key attractions. Originally built in 1899 by McCormick's grandfather and founder of the Chicago Tribune, Joseph Medill, the estate has 16 hectares (40 acres) of stately gardens and two museums. McCormick served in the US Army's First Division and The First Division Museum is devoted to the history of this infantry division from 1917 to Desert Storm. On the lawn are tanks from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Robert R McCormick Museum is the colonel's 35-room, plantation-style mansion complete with original furniture, antiques and artwork.
Milwaukee
No longer merely the land of beer and brats, Milwaukee is taking great pains to reinvent itself. It is worth the trip up there just to have a look at the stunning winged (or as some think of it, whale-fluked shaped) white Quadracci Pavilion of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it has a moveable roof that opens and closes twice a day. When open, it spans over 66m (217ft). Milwaukee has many other interesting attractions to explore: museums, a very cool zoo, Potawatomi Bingo Casino, brewery tours and funky neighbourhoods. For motorcycle buffs, there is the House of Harley. You can learn all about the illustrious bike, plan a trip and talk with other bike enthusiasts.

Restaurants in Chicago - Illinois
From pizza and hot dogs to ethnic food and haute cuisine, Chicago's restaurants can satisfy any palate.
The Chicago restaurants below have been hand-picked by our guide author and are grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over US$40)
Moderate (US$20 to US$40)
Cheap (up to US$20)
These Chicago restaurant prices are based on the average price of a three-course meal and a bottle of house wine or equivalent, excluding sales tax and tips unless otherwise stated. Restaurants charge sales tax, 10.25%, and it is customary to add a 15-20% tip to all bills.
Gibson's
Price: Expensive
Cuisine: Steakhouse
Gibson's is a favourite for native carnivores, tourists and celebrities like Michael Jordan. A friendly staff serves steaks smothered with any combination of blue cheese, onions, crushed pepper, mushrooms, garlic or Cajun rub. Consider sharing your meal because it portions are laughingly large - potatoes almost the size of footballs, humungous desserts and beef portions so huge, the only thing missing are the horns and the tail.
Address: 1028 North Rush St., Chicago, Illinois, United States
Allium
Price: Expensive
Cuisine: American
Contemporary American food includes succulent chops from local farms, dry aged steaks, to innovative garden pea and coconut curry soup and ricotta dumplings, all presided over by award-winning chef Kevin Hickey. Located on the seventh floor of the Four Seasons Chicago hotel, admire magnificent views as you tuck into dinner amid sophisticated surroundings - a marble fireplace and cheetah-print sofa are the talking points.
Address: Four Seasons Hotel, 120 East Delaware Place, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Fogo de Chão
Price: Expensive
Cuisine: Brazilian
A ranchy atmosphere prepares the diner for espeto corridor (continuous service). Diners receive a two-sided chip. Green side means 'go' and will immediately summon a gaucho chef. He will have long skewer of one of 15 different cuts of meat to carve at your table. Turn the chip to red and be left to savour those numerous tasty morsels. Accompaniments include a massive salad bar and a fine wine selection.
Address: 661 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Kit Kat Lounge
Price: Moderate
Cuisine: European
The Martinis, food and entertainment all feature twists, spice and kicks at this cosy 1940s motif venue. While the Andrew Sisters warble away, diners can delight in such specialities as a Clark Gable (a skirt steak salad), a Judy Garland (salmon fillet) or a Joan Collins (stuffed portabello mushrooms). Soon the lights will begin to flash, the music volume will increase, and a female impersonator will provide cabaret entertainment. Except for Fridays and Saturdays, there are nightly specials like the second main course at half price on Wednesday, a bottle of wine for one cent with two main courses on Thursday and half-price Martinis on Sundays and Tuesdays. Closed Monday. No lunch.
Address: 3700 North Halsted Street, Lake View, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Park Grill
Price: Moderate
Cuisine: American
Probably the best people-watching restaurant in the city, Park Grill is located on the Michigan Avenue side of Millennium Park. Black chairs and booths accented with dark woods decorate this dimly lit venue. Outdoor summer dining is replaced with an ice rink in winter. Considering the restaurant is situated within one of Chicago's most popular tourist attractions, dishes like the pork tenderloin are surprisingly tasty and reasonably priced. Service is another story.
Address: 11 North Michigan Avenue in Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Petterino's
Price: Moderate
Cuisine: Italian
The retro trend is alive and well at this eating locale adjacent to the Goodman Theatre. White tablecloths, semi-circular red booths and caricatures of famous Chicagoans, like Harrison Ford (who grew up in the Chicago suburbs), decorate the walls, while Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald can be heard in the background. Tuxedoed waiters serve classic Italian fare, as well as steaks and roasts.
Address: 150 North Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois, United States

Shopping in Chicago - Illinois
Whatever your pleasure, be it discounts and designers, antiques, art or the kitschy, it is available in the Second City.
Key areas:
The best souvenir selection is at Accent Chicago, 875 North Michigan, or City of Chicago Store at the Chicago Waterworks Visitors Center, 163 East Pearson, and Tastes of Chicago, (tel: 1 800 568 8643) will ship authentic Chicago food like hot dogs, pizza and Eli's cheesecake anywhere in the USA.
Many antique shops and dealers are located in the Lake View, Lincoln Square, Ravenswood and Edgewater areas.
For music, search the back walls of the legendary Rolling Stones, 7300 Irving Park Road, for the best deals, Jazz Record Mart, 27 East Illinois Avenue, for jazz, Reckless Records, 3161 North Broadway, 26 East Madison or 1532 North Milwaukee Avenue for alternative, new and used sounds, and 2nd Hand Tunes, 800 Dempster, Evanston, for used records.
Markets:
Between May and October, over 70 markets are held regularly throughout the city in different neighbourhoods, including Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, Bridgeport and Northcenter. Weekly night markets have also started at Logan Square and Argyle and Broadway between June and September between 4pm and 9pm. For a schedule of dates for the different markets,
Shopping centres:
Find interesting architecture and a huge merchandise selection at Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's, the original store) on State Street. But no visit would be complete without a shopping trip on the Magnificent Mile (North Michigan Avenue). The street, crowded with upscale malls (Water Tower Place, 900 North Michigan Avenue, The Shops at North Bridge), fashionable boutiques and big name stores such as Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Nordstroms, is also a people-watching paradise.
For bargains, shop Filene's Basement, 1 North State or 830 Michigan, Mark Shale Outlet, 2593 Elston, or the Gap outlet, 2778 North Milwaukee, for clothes, Jewelers Row, 5 South Wabash, for discounted baubles and Crate and Barrel Outlet, 850 West North Avenue, for housewares.
Opening hours:
Except for special sales or the holiday season, malls and regular stores hours are usually Mon-Sat 1000-2100 and Sun 1100-1800. North Side neighbourhood stores that cater to young people often open later. Chicago sales taxes are 10.25%, aside from food (2%) and pharmaceuticals (0%).
Souvenirs:
Look out for Wrigley Field and other sports-related memorabilia and Al Capone themed souvenirs, particularly clothes and sportswear. Music CDs, such as jazz and blues, are also popular. As for food, pick up some Italian Beef, deep dish/stuffed pizza, Garret's Popcorn and Chicago-style hot dogs.

Millennium Park is a public park located in the Loop community area of Chicago in Illinois, US, and originally intended to celebrate the millennium. It is a prominent civic center near the city's Lake Michigan shoreline that covers a 24.5-acre (99,000 m2) section of northwestern Grant Park. The area was previously occupied by parkland, Illinois Central rail yards, and parking lots.[1] The park, which is bounded by Michigan Avenue, Randolph Street, Columbus Drive and East Monroe Drive, features a variety of public art. As of 2009, Millennium Park trailed only Navy Pier as a Chicago tourist attraction.[2] More info visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Park

Transport in Chicago - Illinois
Public transport:
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates trains and buses within the city. The trains are referred to as the 'El' or 'L' (the name is derived from the elevated rail that circles around the main Downtown business and shopping district). Each of the seven train lines are identified and named by a different colour. CTA services run 24 hours. Overnight or Night Owl services operate between approximately 0000 and 0500.
Passes for two, three and five days are available. There is a transfer charge of US$0.25 between routes, whether train or bus. Tickets and passes are available for purchase from machines and ticket offices at the stations, as well as from visitor information centres and directly from the CTA.
Metra is a commuter rail system serving the suburbs and surrounding cities with 12 lines.
Free trolley buses travel between the city's most popular attractions like Navy Pier, the Museum Campus and North Michigan Avenue. Buses run from late May until early September and then again during the holiday season (late November until after New Year's Day).

An underground system of 'pedways' (pedestrian walkways) is especially useful for escaping bad weather and crowded downtown streets. From this network, which links over 40 blocks of streets, there is access to many buildings, stations and shops in the Loop. Maps are available, free of charge, from hotels and around the various points of the system, including the Illinois Center.
Taxis:
These are easy to hail on the streets, especially in the Loop and Wrigleyville. A tip of 10-15% is usually expected. The main companies are American United Cab Assoc. Checker Taxi Assoc. Inc. Flash Cab Co , Wolley Cab and Yellow Cab .
Driving:
For those who are new to the city, driving is not recommended. The traffic is hectic during rush hours and confusing because of the one-way street systems in Downtown areas. Local drivers are sometimes impatient with those who do not know where they are going, so it is best for visitors to get into the main areas by train, bus or taxi and continue on foot.
If driving is the only option, be aware that the city streets are largely based on a grid pattern, the central point of which is the crossroads at Madison Avenue and State Street, in the Loop district. From here, the naming of a street as 'north' or 'south' or as 'west' or 'east' is taken for granted.
Street parking meters take coins above US$0.10 (a dime), with US$0.25 (a quarter) being the most useful coin. The more congested the area, the higher the meter rate. Major attractions may have limited parking but, in general, Downtown parking is difficult and expensive. From 1 December to 1 April, Snow Parking regulations apply on many streets, making fewer spaces available, and cars parked on snow routes are likely to be towed.
Car hire:
The minimum age for hiring a car varies from 21 to 25 years. Car rental agencies charge an extra premium to drivers under 25. A valid driving licence or an International Driving Permit is required. Costly insurance can be part of the hire arrangement, but renters should check their auto insurance to see if their policies cover rental cars.
Bicycle hire:
For visitors, cycling on the streets is discouraged; however, biking the lakefront cycling paths is quite pleasant. Bike Chicago, at Navy Pier, Millennium Park has a good range of bicycles for hire.

The Africa exhibit experience takes visitors from the city streets into the harsh but magnificently beautiful Sahara and into the galley of a slave ship. Inside Ancient Egypt is just that, with 23 real mummies in a recreated burial chamber. Shrink to the size of a bug and burrow into the surface of the soil at the Underground Adventure. Weekends are most crowded. The Ancient Americas , the museum's newest permanent exhibit, scans 13,000 years of pre-European, western hemisphere culture.
