An exciting new strategy to stop stuttering blocks is introduced in this video of a presentation at the 2019 World Congress of the International Stuttering Association, by speech-language pathologist William Parry of the United States. Parry challenges common misconceptions about stuttering by showing how the interference with speech is best understood and treated, not in terms of “fluency,” but rather as a substitution of physical effort in place of vowel phonation, as part of a “freeze” response triggered by the brain’s amygdala. Based on these insights, he presents a practical, multi-faceted strategy -- largely implemented while inhaling – to eliminate stuttering blocks and to facilitate easy, natural-sounding speech. Preliminary results of this new strategy are illustrated with before-and-after videos.
This new strategy has been at least seven years in the making. It is thanks to more than 150 persons who stutter, from all over the world, who participated online in the Valsalva Stuttering Therapy Program. All past participants who wish to share in this new strategy are urged to email William Parry at contact@valsalva.org. In Part One, William Parry challenges common misconceptions about stuttering by showing that the interference with speech is best understood and treated, not in terms of “fluency,” but rather as a substitution of physical effort in place of vowel phonation, as part of a “freeze” response triggered by the brain’s amygdala. This interference may be influenced by anxiety, anticipation of difficulty, emotional investment in words, and intention in speaking.

Bill Parry (umpire)
William Robert Parry (28 June 1890 – 9 July 1955) was a test match umpire. Born in Bangor in 1890 he began umpiring Minor County matches in the 1920s after losing a leg in the Great War. Known for his idiosyncratic stance, as a result of his disability, he stood in 5 Test matches between 1928 and 1930 before withdrawing from the first class list in 1935 to pursue business interests. He was injured in a match between Yorkshire and Gloucestershire in 1927 when he fell as he hurried into position to judge a run out and broke the remains of his amputated limb. He died in Taunton in 1955.

William Parry (tutor)
William Parry (1754–1819) was a Welsh Congregational minister and tutor.
Life
Parry was born on 25 November 1754 at Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, where his father was a deacon of the Baptist congregation. Around 1760 the family moved to London; his father was in the woollen business, and lived in Stepney. On the advice of Samuel Brewer, Parry entered Homerton Academy on 8 February 1774, as a candidate for the Congregational ministry. He was received into the church at Stepney on 29 April 1774, soon afterwards preached with success at Gravesend in Kent, and declined an invitation from the church there.
In 1780 Parry finished his course, left Homerton, and was ordained to the ministry at Little Baddow in Essex. While there he kept a school, and helped to organise a benevolent society. In 1790 he was active in efforts to obtain the repeal of the Test Act and Corporation Act.
In 1795 Parry supported the formation of the Essex Congregational Union. But his congregation fell off, after the emigration to North America of many of its leading members. He the accepted the tutorship of the academy of the Coward Trust, about to be removed in 1799 to Wymondley Academy in Hertfordshire. This post he held for the rest of his life.

In Part One, William Parry challenges common misconceptions about stuttering by showing that the interference with speech is best understood and treated, not in terms of “fluency,” but rather as a substitution of physical effort in place of vowel phonation, as part of a “freeze” response triggered by the brain’s amygdala. This interference may be influenced by anxiety, anticipation of difficulty, emotional investment in words, and intention in speaking.
The presenters are will suggest a variety of strategies to reduce effort impulses, strengthen your confidence in speaking, and clear the way for easier, more enjoyable speech.
William Parry is an SLP who has been developing a new approach to easier speech called “Valsalva Stuttering Therapy.” He previously overcame his own stuttering to become a trial lawyer. An exciting new strategy to stop stuttering blocks is introduced in this video of a presentation at the 2019 World Congress of the International Stuttering Association, by speech-language pathologist William Parry of the United States. Parry challenges common misconceptions about stuttering by showing how the interference with speech is best understood and treated, not in terms of “fluency,” but rather as a substitution of physical effort in place of vowel phonation, as part of a “freeze” response triggered by the brain’s amygdala. Based on these insights, he presents a practical, multi-faceted strategy -- largely implemented while inhaling – to eliminate stuttering blocks and to facilitate easy, natural-sounding speech. Preliminary results of this new strategy are illustrated with before-and-after videos.
This new strategy has been at least seven years in the making. It is thanks to more than 150 persons who stutter, from all over the world, who participated online in the Valsalva Stuttering Therapy Program. All past participants who wish to share in this new strategy are urged to email William Parry at contact@valsalva.org. Persons wishing additional information should email Mr. Parry at stuttertherapy@aol.com.
