William Alan Finn (born February 28, 1952) is an American composer and lyricist of musicals. His musical Falsettos received the 1992 Tony Awards for Best Music and Lyrics and for Best Book.
Finn was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He is Jewish, and grew up in Natick, Massachusetts with his parents, and siblings, Michael and Nancy. While attending Natick High School, Finn competed with the Natick Speech Team. He majored in music at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. When he graduated, he received the Hutchinson Fellowship (a musical composition award). He is also Adjunct Faculty Composer/Lyricist at New York University.
Finn is a heavily autobiographical writer; he always writes his own lyrics. His topics have included the gay and Jewish experiences in contemporary America, and also family, belonging, sickness, healing, and loss. According to a 2006 article, "The Washington Post called him 'the composer laureate of loss.'"
Finn is especially noted for his work on what was to become a trilogy of short musicals Off-Broadway. In Trousers, March of the Falsettos, and Falsettoland all chronicle the lives of the character Marvin, his ex-wife Trina, his boyfriend, Whizzer, his psychiatrist, Mendel, and his son, Jason.Falsettos, the combination of the latter two parts of his Marvin Trilogy (March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland), opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theater on April 29, 1992, and ran for 486 performances. It won the 1992 Tony Awards for Best Music and Lyrics and for Best Book, the latter shared with James Lapine.
A New Brain is a musical with music and lyrics by William Finn and book by Finn and James Lapine. Though many of Finn's previous musicals were to some extent autobiographical, A New Brain dealt directly with his own harrowing experience with arteriovenous malformation and the healing power of art. The hero of the musical, Gordon Schwinn, worries that he may not live to complete his work. Finn wrote many of the songs soon after his release from the hospital. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1998 and has been revived in the U.S., England and elsewhere.
A New Brain started as a "series of songs that Bill Finn wrote after he left the hospital", with a concert of those songs produced at The Public Theater. A fully staged workshop production was held in 1996 and again in 1997 and included contributions by Lapine.
The musical was first produced Off-Broadway at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center, with previews beginning on May 14, 1998 and closed on October 11, 1998. The production was directed by Graciela Daniele and featured a cast headed by Malcolm Gets (Gordon Michael Schwinn) and Christopher Invar (Roger Delli-Bovi), including Michael Mandell (Richard), Penny Fuller (Mimi Schwinn), Mary Testa (Lisa), Kristin Chenoweth (Waitress/Nancy D), Chip Zien (Mr. Bungee), Liz Larsen (Rhoda), John Jellison (Doctor), and Keith Byron Kirk (Minister).Lovette George was an understudy for Rhoda, Waitress, and Nancy D. Christopher Innvar left the show in June 1998 due to vocal problems, and Norm Lewis was to sing the role of Roger on the recording.
Finn (pl. Finns) is commonly used to refer to a member of the Finn ethnic group or a citizen of Finland.

In the early 1990s, songwriter William Finn was riding the wave of success of his Tony-winning musical Falsettos when he was struck down with an inoperable brain tumor. His experiences in the hospital (and the fact that the growth wasn't so inoperable after all) would go on to inspire his and James Lapine's 1998 off-Broadway musical A New Brain. Seventeen years after it premiered at Lincoln Center Theater, the show is preparing for its New York return, in an Encores! Off-Center production at City Center starring Jonathan Groff, Ana Gasteyer, and Tony winner Dan Fogler. TheaterMania spoke with Finn and the cast about how this harrowing experience ended up making great theater.

MARVIN:
One, two. One, two, three. One, two, three, four.
Marvin is boy who has giddy seizures,
He's laughing all the time.
Marvin is boy who has giddy seizures,
Sometimes they're fatal.
When he turns upside down like a ladle pouring soup
He's a veritable fool.
Marvin is my very best friend in school.
It's me and Marvin.
Lately I've been thinking maybe Marvin needs attention
Of a private sort.
Maybe this whole seizure thing is something he invented,
Or is it medicinal: should his mother be blamed?
ALL:
Marvin has a something which most everybody needs;
He cannot ever be embarrassed.
MARVIN:
Marvin is my very best friend in school.
And I'm embarrassed and ashamed. Oh.
LADIES (all at once):
Marvin! What are you doing?
Who do you think you are, Marvin?
What's Marvin doing?
MARVIN:
Pardon me boys and girls, but I'm having a seizure.
LADIES:
Oh, Marvin. Hey, Marvin.
MARVIN:
Yes I'm having a seizure today, hey, hey,
Watch me laugh.
LADIES:
Marvin's giddy seizures.
MARVIN:
Watch me cry.
LADIES:
Marvin's giddy seizures.
MARVIN:
I am counting on your prayers to get me by.
LADIES:
Marvin's giddy seizures.
MARVIN:
Well my arms disappear and my legs disappear and my knees disappear and my
shoulders disappear
When Marvin throws the best fit of the year.
ALL:
Marvin's giddy seizures: Marvin needs love.
He needs love. He needs love.
He needs love. Ooooooh.
MARVIN:
Marvin holds his breath, his face is under water
But that's not a seizure.
Marvin talks of death, he imitates a slaughter
But that's not a seizure.
Then he begins to shriek like a virgin,
And his eyes turn an ordinary fizz--
(Nothing's exactly like I say it is)--
But hey, that's a seizure!
LADIES (all at once):
Marvin! What are you doing?
Who do you think you are, Marvin?
What's Marvin doing?
MARVIN:
Pardon me boys and girls but I'm having a seizure.
LADIES:
Oh, Marvin. Hey, Marvin.
MARVIN:
Yes, I'm having a seizure today, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Watch me laugh.
LADIES:
Marvin's giddy seizures.
MARVIN:
Watch me cry.
LADIES:
Marvin's giddy seizures.
MARVIN:
I am counting on your prayers to get me by.
LADIES:
Marvin's giddy seizures.
Arms.
MARVIN:
Disappear!
LADIES:
Legs.
MARVIN:
Disappear!
LADIES:
Groin.
MARVIN:
Disappears!
LADIES:
Knees.
MARVIN:
Disappear
When Marvin throws the best fit of the year.
ALL:
Marvin's giddy seizures: Marvin needs love.
He needs love. He needs love.
He needs love. Ooooooh.
Marvin's giddy seizures: Marvin needs love.
He needs love. He needs love.
He needs love. Ooooooh.
Marvin's giddy seizures: Marvin needs love.
He needs love. He needs love.
