Cross (John Huston) questions Jake (Jack Nicholson) about his investigation.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"You may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't," warns water baron Noah Cross (John Huston), when smooth cop-turned-private eye J.J. "Jake" Gittes (Jack Nicholson) starts nosing around Cross's water diversion scheme. That proves to be the ominous lesson of Chinatown, Roman Polanski's critically lauded 1974 revision of 1940s film noir detective movies. In 1930s Los Angeles, "matrimonial work" specialist Gittes is hired by Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) to tail her husband, Water Department engineer Hollis Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling). Gittes photographs him in the company of a young blonde and figures the case is closed, only to discover that the real Mrs. Mulwray had nothing to do with hiring Gittes in the first place. When Hollis turns up dead, Gittes decides to investigate further, encountering a shady old-age home, corrupt bureaucrats, angry orange farmers, and a nostril-slicing thug (Polanski) along the way. By the time he confronts Cross, Evelyn's father and Mulwray's former business partner, Jake thinks he knows everything, but an even more sordid truth awaits him. When circumstances force Jake to return to his old beat in Chinatown, he realizes just how impotent he is against the wealthy, depraved Cross. "Forget it, Jake," his old partner tells him. "It's Chinatown." Reworking the somber underpinnings of detective noir along more pessimistic lines, Polanski and screenwriter Robert Towne convey a '70s-inflected critique of capitalist and bureaucratic malevolence in a carefully detailed period piece harkening back to the genre's roots in the 1930s and '40s. Gittes always has a smart comeback like Humphrey Bogart's Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, but the corruption Gittes finds is too deep for one man to stop. Other noir revisions, such as Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973) and Arthur Penn's Night Moves (1975), also centered on the detective's inefficacy in an uncertain '70s world, but Chinatown's period sheen renders this dilemma at once contemporary and timeless, pointing to larger implications about the effects of corporate rapaciousness on individuals. Polanski and Towne clashed over Chinatown's ending; Polanski won the fight, but Towne won the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Chinatown was nominated for ten other Oscars, including Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, and Score.

The film was the last in a series of three films directed by Huston while serving in the United States Army Signal Corps. This documentary film follows 75 U.S. soldiers who have sustained debilitating emotional trauma and depression. A series of scenes chronicles their entry into a psychiatric hospital, their treatment and eventual recovery. Some of the treatments involved then-new drugs and hypnosis, and the impression was given of miraculous cures, though the narration says that there will be continuing psychiatric care.
"Let there be light" was controversial in its portrayal of shell-shocked soldiers from the war. "Twenty percent of our army casualties", the narrator says, "suffered psychoneurotic symptoms: a sense of impending disaster, hopelessness, fear, and isolation." Apparently due to the potentially demoralizing effects the film might have on recruitment, it was subsequently banned by the Army after its production, although some pirated copies had been made. Military police once confiscated a print Huston was about to show friends at the Museum of Modern Art. The Army claimed it invaded the privacy of the soldiers involved. The release in the 1980s by Secretary of the Army Clifford Alexander, Jr. was attributed to his friend Jack Valenti who worked to get the ban lifted. The National Archives now sells and rents copies of the film, and as a government work it is freely copied.

Anjelica Huston speaks about her father John Huston, and working with the luminary director on three films--including his final one, The Dead. Film noir, the influence of The Maltese Falcon, and Ms. Huston's affection for the African Queen and Moulin Rouge (plus a shared distaste for Baz Luhrman) is discussed in this excerpt from the full length Talk Show with Harper Simon.

The quality of the copy of this important film by John Huston currently on YouTube isn't very good, so I found a better one and tweaked it with digital image and sound processing. For the first time, Huston explored the diagnosis and treatment of what used to be called "battle fatigue" or "shell shock" among returning servicemen. This condition is now know as PTSD - post traumatic stress disorder.

After the war and in the wake of McCarthyism, Huston became increasingly disenchanted with America and Hollywood and began to shift his filmmaking to Europe, using, when he could, American money to make films with European themes or shot in Europe. Thus, Moby Dick (1956) was filmed partially in Youghal with some Irish actors in minor roles, though not in Irish parts. The later Sinful Davey (1968) was also shot in Ireland and features a number of Irish actors, although, again, it is not in any way an Irish-themed film. In 1952 Huston settled in Galway and took Irish citizenship in 1964. During the 1960s, Huston became involved in the campaign to establish an Irish film industry and lent his name to the Huston Report of 1968. A scene of him speaking of his interest in local Irish filmmaking can be seen in Peter Lennon's controversial documentary THE ROCKY ROAD TO DUBLIN. In 1973 Huston filmed and set some of his thriller THE MACKINTOSH MAN in Ireland. In later life, Huston suffered increasingly from emphysema but this did not prevent from filming his final adaptation, THE DEAD, from the short story by James Joyce with an Irish cast in California. Re-released in 2006, the film has increasingly become seen as not only Huston' s crowning work but as the most successful adaptations of Joyce work. A documentary on the shooting of the film, JOHN HUSTON AND THE DUBLINERS: ON THE SET OF 'THE DEAD' (1987) contains interviews with Huston and other cast members.

"Let There Be Light" wasn't released to the public for 30 years for obvious reasons, but it's a story that must be told because it's still highly relevant to our times. Zeno, Zeno's Warbird Videos http://zenoswarbirdvideos.com
From the IMDB: "The final entry in a trilogy of films produced for the U.S. government by John Huston. This documentary film follows 75 U.S. soldiers who have sustained debilitating emotional trauma and depression. A series of scenes chronicle their entry into a psychiatric hospital, their treatment and eventual recovery."
Don't blame me if there is a popup ad at the beginning this film -- blame YouTube!

Report from the Aleutians is a 47-minute documentary propaganda film produced by the U.S. Army Signal Corps about the Aleutian Islands Campaign during World War II. It was directed and narrated by John Huston.
In contrast to the other technicolor films made in the Pacific war, Report from the Aleutians has relatively little combat footage, and instead concentrates on the daily lives of the servicemen on Adak Island, as they live and work there while flying missions over nearby Kiska. The film opens with a map showing the strategic importance of the island, and the thrust of the 1942 Japanese offensive into Midway and Dutch Harbor. Photographs of the pilots who beat the Japanese back at Dutch Harbor are passed before the camera. "There is no monument to these men. If you want to see their monument, look around you."

Adak Island (Aleut: Adaax) is an island near the western extent of the Andreanof Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Alaska's southernmost town, Adak, is located on the island. The island has a land area of 274.59 square miles (711.18 km2), measuring 33.9 miles (54.5 km) on length and 22 miles (35 km) on width, making it the 25th largest island in the United States.
Due to harsh winds, frequent cloud cover, and cold temperatures, vegetation is mostly tundra (grasses, mosses, berries, low-lying flowering plants) at lower elevations. The highest point is Mt. Moffett, near the northwest end of the island, at an elevation of 3,924 feet (1,196 m). It is snow covered the greater part of the year. Adak, Alaska is its largest and principal city.

http://publicdomainmovies.info - Beat the Devil is a 1953 film directed by John Huston. The screenplay was written by Huston and Truman Capote, loosely based upon a novel of the same name by British journalist Claud Cockburn, writing under the pseudonym James Helvick. It was intended by Huston as a parody of The Maltese Falcon (1941), also directed by Huston, and films of the same genre.
The script, which was written on a day-to-day basis as the film was being shot, concerns the adventures of a motley crew of swindlers and ne'er-do-wells trying to lay claim to land rich in uranium deposits in Kenya as they wait in a small Italian port to travel aboard an ill-fated tramp steamer en route to Mombasa.[3] The cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley, Peter Lorre and Bernard Lee.
This movie does not easily fit into the standard set of film categories; it has variously been classified as a "thriller," a "comedy," a "drama," a "crime" and a "romance" movie. It is a parody of the Film Noir style that Huston himself had pioneered.
A quartet of international crooks—Peterson, O'Hara, Ross and Ravello—are stranded in Italy while their steamer is being repaired. With them are the Dannreuthers. The six are headed for Africa, ostensibly to sell vacuum cleaners but actually to buy land supposedly loaded with uranium. They are joined by others who apparently have similar designs.

Report From the Aleutians is a documentary propaganda film produced by the U.S.
The American forces dug in at Adak Island, and there commenced daily bombing missions over the Japanese who had taken Kiska. The film focuses on their routine activities such as harbor patrols, messes, news boards and mail call. "Ask any pilot. He'd tell you he'd gladly fly an extra trip over Kiska to get just one letter." One pilot's crash landing is shown, and his funeral is filmed.
The last twenty minutes or so of the film is taken from footage taken over a mission over Japanese positions. The monotony of the one hour trip there is emphasized, noting that some have taken up "mental solitaire" on the way over. But at Kiska there is no lack of excitement, as several loads of bombs are dropped over the Japanese, and fire is exchanged by the tailgunner. At the end of the film the servicemen at Adak are shown rejoicing that all of their comrades have returned.
Huston included shots showing the monotony of Army life, e.g. latrine digging and cigarette smoking, and Army authorities objected to the inclusion of these scenes. However, Huston fought for the inclusion of these scenes and eventually prevailed, although after a delay of a couple of months.

Let There Be Light is a 1946 American documentary film directed by John Huston.
The film, commissioned by the United States Army Signal Corps, was the final entry in a John Huston trilogy of films produced at the request of the U.S. Government. This documentary film follows 75 U.S. soldiers who have sustained debilitating emotional trauma and depression. A series of scenes chronicle their entry into a psychiatric hospital, their treatment and eventual recovery. Some of the treatments involved then-new drugs and hypnosis, and the impression was given of miraculous cures, though the narration says that there will be continuing psychiatric care.
Much of the filming was done at Edgewood State Hospital, Deer Park, Long Island, New York which between 1944 and 1946 was part of Mason General Hospital, a psychiatric hospital run by the United States War Department named for an Army doctor and general.
The film was controversial in its portrayal of shell-shocked soldiers from the war. "Twenty percent of our army casualties", the narrator says, "suffered psycho-neurotic symptoms: a sense of impending disaster, hopelessness, fear, and isolation." Apparently due to the potentially demoralizing effects the film might have on recruitment, it was subsequently banned by the Army after its production, although some pirated copies had been made. Military police once confiscated a print Huston was about to show friends at the Museum of Modern Art. The Army claimed it invaded the privacy of the soldiers involved, and the releases Huston had obtained were lost; the War Department refused to get new ones. The release in the 1980s by Secretary of the Army Clifford Alexander, Jr. was attributed to his friend Jack Valenti who worked to get the ban lifted.

Leon Garfield's Dickensian novellas, set in 1767 in a small English town on New Year's Eve, starring bewigged Paul Scofield, who certainly looks the part here of a cold-hearted master. A young apothecary's apprentice, Ben Partridge (Mark Farmer), souring from being forced to work late on the eve of the new year by his master Mr. Corbett (Scofield), is so filled with hatred as a result that he wishes for Corbett to be dead, going so far as to gather ingredients with which he hopes to cast a fatal spell upon the older man. A highly imaginative script from Gerry Wilson realizes in cinematic terms the well-constructed and taut original by Garfield, and fosters a strong sense of the dramatic, including several macabre scenes among the town's underworld, a favorite device of the novelist. A rather dark film that echoes Stevenson as well as Dickens, GHOST centers about the displacement of young Partridge as he discovers that the burden of an omnipresent phantom is by way of being intolerable and, to his salvation, the ambiguous aspects of good and evil in their natural duality lead to certain discoveries about his foreign master, resulting in a satisfying conclusion. Scofield, magnificent as always, dominates his scenes, creating his role of the Scroogelike apothecary with interesting physical business, Huston is wonderful as the Collector of Souls in his final performance, and Burgess Meredith contributes a brief and highly idiomatic performance.
Directed by Danny Huston.
