Under pressure from finite fossil fuel reserves and scrutiny from the West, Iran's Nuclear program has had a difficult road. This is the story of Iranian nuclear energy told from the other side.
"Iran has tried its best to have a pragmatic approach, not an ambitious approach", claims the country's ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh. But are all such claims destined to fall on deaf ears? A climate of suspicion and hostility has historically smothered any meaningful discussion of Iran's right to nuclear technologies. The West accuse Iran of creating a 'confidence deficit' by pursuing a clandestine programme of enrichment; Iran sense hypocrisy, and claim to be singled out. "There are similar cases with Taiwan, with Egypt, with Brazil, and all of these countries get away with it." Ultimately, all parties acknowledge that a system that enshrines the right of the powerful to bend the rules is unsustainable. "The whole of the non-proliferation regime has elements of double-standards built into it", concedes David Hannay, a member of the House of Lords. But will this consensus signal a move beyond the rhetoric to purposeful negotiation? "Iran has an opportunity to become the good boy of the world."

After 42 hours overtime, the Iran nuclear negotiations with the United States, Russia, China, France, Great Britain and Germany reached a framework deal in Lausanne, Switzerland. In return for lifting the sanctions, which means more than $110 billion a year relief for Tehran and a return to the global economic market, Iran will be significantly constrained in its nuclear programme. This is the framework agreement, meaning the formal deal will be signed before July 1st. Over the next three months, the technical details will have to be worked out, but what does the Iranian nuclear deal really mean?

The Russian president has criticized the US for continuing to develop its missile system despite the fact that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program has been solved.
Vladimir Putin said the reason that spurred the US to build its missile system is gone, but Washington continues to develop the program. He said the US cheated the whole world over Iran’s nuclear program and now the whole world is being misled once again. Putin was speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi. Elsewhere in his remarks, he said Iran and some other regional countries should be part of the efforts aimed at resolving the crisis in Syria. Putin added that he is confident that his country’s military action in Syria will help end the crisis and restore peace in the war-torn nation.

Conservative opposition to the recent Iran nuclear deal has reached the Senate and the streets of New York City. In the Senate, John Kerry vociferously defended the deal against Republican critics. Also, a few thousand New Yorkers took to the streets with signs protesting the deal. TYT hosts John Iadarola (Think Tank) and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show) break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Kerry cautioned against viewing the matter through the lens of just the US. The other world powers involved in the deal, he said, were “not dumb”.
“They’re experts – every one of them,” he said.
The choice, Kerry added, was between an agreement “that will ensure Iran’s nuclear agreement is limited, rigorously scrutinized and fully peaceful, or no deal at all”.”*

Republicans in the House have rejected President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, at least symbolically. Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), John Iadarola (Think Tank), and Wes Clark Jr., hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"The House on Friday rejected a resolution to approve the Iran nuclear deal, with the vote underscoring how controversial the accord has been with President Obama’s own party.
While most Democrats voted to approve the nuclear bargain, 25 voted against it, creating a wedge that Republicans hope to use to their advantage in the 2016 elections.
Every Republican voted against the resolution, with the exception of libertarian Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who voted "present." The tally was 162-269.”*

Iran says it has removed the core of its Arak nuclear reactor, and UN inspectors visited the site on Thursday to verify the action. The removal will largely eliminate any possibility that Iran might produce nuclear bomb-grade plutonium. Iran's nuclear downsizing is in exchange for international and Western sanctions relief.

Five years after the Jasmine Revolution, has life in Tunisia improved since the fall of Ben Ali?
Also on today's programme, 'Implementation Day'. Is the final stage of the Iran nuclear deal imminent?
And in Picture This, Jakarta under attack. At least seven are dead as the Indonesian capital goes into lock down.
Exactly five years ago today, after weeks of protest former Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali was overthrown and the so called Jasmine Revolution succeeded in its goal - to end his rule. He was the first in a series of leaders to fall to popular revolt - Egypt and Libya soon followed as Mubarak and Gaddafi fell in quick succession. It would signal the beginning of the Arab Spring - a movement that would change the history of the Middle East forever. But now five years on, Syria is devastated by a full scale war, Libya in turmoil and many are left questioning Egypt's democratic methods. Tunisia has been held up as the success story of those revolutions, but half a decade later as the country celebrates the fall of Ben Ali, many Tunisians are saying they were better off under the former dictator.
The final step of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers could be imminent. On Friday the IAEA is expected to reveal whether Iran has fulfilled its obligations under the agreement. If that is the case 'implementation day' - could be just around the corner paving the way for sanctions to end. The Newsmakers Ashraf Helmi has more.
In today's picture this...at least seven people have been killed in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Police say there were a series of explosions and a barrage of gunfire by militants in the city centre. Daesh has now claimed responsibility for the assault. Take a look at how the attacks panned out....

The suspension will be in place until January 28. The move is to clear the way for continuous preparations for the implementation of the July nuclear agreement between Iran and the P-five-plus-one group. The E-U’s nuclear-related sanctions against Iran will be completely lifted once the International Atomic Energy Agency confirms Tehran’s compliance with its commitments under the deal. Europe had suspended some sanctions against Iran to facilitate the nuclear talks with Tehran. Iran had also paused part of its nuclear activities in a goodwill gesture. The freeze on sanctions was extended for six months after the landmark nuclear deal to give Iran time to meet the conditions.

Video Transcript:
After the safe return of the 10 Navy sailors, the State Department fawned over the Iran nuclear deal as the diplomatic reason for their return.
JOHN KIRBY: If it wasn’t for the dialogue and the relationship [John Kerry] has now with foreign minister Zarif, built up over many, many months, there’s no way that we could have gotten those sailors out. And I think that’s important to remember.
Several people in the media shared their criticisms.
BRIAN KILMEADE: But what about the relationship that allows the Iranian navy to take our guys perhaps that were doing nothing wrong, that called the USS Harry Truman -
STEVE DOOCY: At gunpoint.
KILMEADE: At gunpoint. That put them on their knees with their hands over their heads? So why is this something that should be celebrated and lauded?
MATT LEE: But you’re not at all concerned that the hailing of this “diplomatic triumph” by administration officials… is not overselling the value of this line of communication, when on issues such as the detainees, the civilian detainees, the bad acts in the region, the missile tests, this line of communication hasn’t produced anything.
But rest assured, the State Department still have their concerns.
MARK TONER: Nobody’s under any illusions that all is forgiven, we can move forward into a bright sunshiny future. We still have issues of serious concern with Iran and we need to work on resolving them.
KIRBY: Nobody is turning a blind eye to Iran. It isn’t about a trust relationship with Iran. We’re mindful of what Iran is capable of. That’s why we’re so engaged in the Middle East. That’s why we’re trying to work through diplomacy to solve some of these problems. It’s complicated.

Over the summer of 2012, despite increased international pressure and economic sanctions, Iran doubled the number of nuclear centrifuges installed in its underground Fordow site, stopping just short of the capacity to produce nuclear fuel. President Obama has rejected Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's call to draw a "red line" that would trigger U.S. military action. But what would the costs and benefits of military action be?
