Plot: Biopic of J. Edgar Hoover told by Hoover as he recalls his career for a biography. Early in his career, Hoover fixated on Communists, anarchists and any other revolutionary taking action against the U.S. government. He slowly builds the agency's reputation, becoming the sole arbiter of who gets hired and fired. One of his hires is Clyde Tolson who is quickly promoted to Assistant Director and would be Hoover's confidant and companion for the rest of Hoover's life. Hoover's memories have him playing a greater role in the many high profile cases the FBI was involved in - the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the arrest of bank robbers like John Dillinger - and also show him to be quite adept at manipulating the various politicians he's worked with over his career, thanks in large part to his secret files.

Annie Hoover: [Contemptuously to Edgar] I would rather have a dead son than a daffodil for a son.
J. Edgar Hoover: Do I kill everything that I love?
[first lines]::J. Edgar Hoover: Let me tell you something. The SCLC has direct Communist ties. Even great men can be corrupted, can't they? Communism is not a political party. It is a disease. It corrupts the soul, turning men, even the gentlest of men, into vicious evil tyrants.

This clip is from the television special 'Lucy and Desi: Home Movies' from 1992. I VHS taped my copy back on August 1, 1993. I believe this special is available on VHS or now, DVD, and is highly recommended. It was produced by Lucie and Desi Jr Arnaz, and they are interviewed in the special, along with a who's-who of Hollywood and backstage at the 'I Love Lucy' show.
In this video clip, Desi and Lucy explain how the 'I Love Lucy' television series reached the airwaves. As much as Lucy was the focus of talent in front of the camera, Desi was equally as important as the focus behind the camera. He was pushing technological and distribution innovation throughout the reign of the 'I Love Lucy' show during the 1950s, and he helped guide the way for the show to reach the syndication market, which soon thereafter was populated with other off network television properties. Desi also went on to become one of the most successful television producers of comedies in the 1960s via Desilu. Truly a television pioneer.

There are a tremendous amount of books on 'I Love Lucy' and Lucy and Desi.... probably more books written about the subject than any other television show in history (understandably so.) I have many in my personal library, but my three favorites are:
1) 'Desilu: The Story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz'
by - Coyne Steven Sanders and Tom Gilbert
This is an absolutely amazing book - in my mind, the best book ever written on a television series. It reads almost like a three act play - rise (1950s), fall (late 1950s and 1960), rebirth (1960s). A story of the durability of a company and the durability of a marriage/relationship that stood the test of time during an explosive and chaotic time in the television industry.
2) 'The Lucy Book - A complete Guide to Her Five Decades on Television
by - Geoffrey Mark Fidelman (w/forward by Steve Allen)
This is a remarkable, one-of-a-kind book. I saw it on the bookstore shelf amongst other Lucy books, and was just stunned by the detail of this book. Every single episode of every single series Lucy work on (including her TV Specials and work she did on other television series) over five decades is listed chronologically in this book, with a detailed description of each episode, interviews with the actors, writers and directors who worked on each episode, background info on what took place during the filming of each episode, etc. Amazing amount of work and effort went into compiling this book. A 'I can't put this down' type reading material.
3) 'Love Lucy'
by - Lucille Ball [with Betty Hannah Hoffman] w/forward by Lucie Arnaz.
This book was originally written by Lucille Ball back in 1960 and 1961 timeframe, but the manuscript was never published. The manuscript was found decades later and published in 1996. The timing of Lucille writing the book is really quite special - it was in the 'down period' between the ending of 'I Love Lucy' (in 1959/60) and the beginning of 'The Lucy' show in the fall of 1962. She was working on Broadway at the time in ' Wildcats'. Really, the perfect time for her to reflect back on her life up to that point in time as she went through an amazing transformation both in front of (Wildcats) and behind the camera (Desilu).

wn.com/Cbs Television's 20Th Century Foundation Desi Arnaz Lucille Ball
This clip is from the television special 'Lucy and Desi: Home Movies' from 1992. I VHS taped my copy back on August 1, 1993. I believe this special is available on VHS or now, DVD, and is highly recommended. It was produced by Lucie and Desi Jr Arnaz, and they are interviewed in the special, along with a who's-who of Hollywood and backstage at the 'I Love Lucy' show.

"I LOVE LUCY" is an American television sitcom starring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley. The black-and-white series originally ran from October 1951 to May 1957. After the series ended, however, a modified version continued for three more seasons with 13 one-hour specials, running from 1957 to 1960, known first as "The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show" and later it reruns as The "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour".
The show, which was the first scripted television program to be shot in front of a studio audience, won five Emmy Awards and received numerous nominations. Another award that the show won was the coveted George Foster Peabody Award for "recognition of distinguished achievement in television."
Originally set in an apartment building in New York City, "I Love Lucy" centers on Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) and her singer/bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz), along with their best friends and landlords Fred Mertz (William Frawley) and Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance). During the second season, Lucy and Ricky have a son named Ricky Ricardo, Jr. ("Little Ricky"), whose birth was timed to coincide with Ball's real-life delivery of her son Desi Arnaz Jr.
Episode (1958) Info:
When Ricky takes Lucy, Fred, Ethel and Little Ricky to Sun Valley, everyone is excited, until Lucy learns that Fred, Ricky and Little Ricky are going to be on TV that week, without the girls. To make Ricky jealous, Lucy begins skiing and spending time with Fernando Lamas. While it all starts out harmless, friction occurs when Lamas gets a little closer to Lucy than Ricky can handle...

The owners of "The Lucy Show" somehow screwed up. All, or almost all of the episodes of "The Lucy Show" are in the Public Domain. While I was never a huge fan of the first show that Lucy did without Desi, I was definitely a fan of one episode of the show. Jack Benny was a guest, and Mr. Mooney wanted him as a bank client. The only way they could get his business was to build an impregnable vault, which would have been similar to the infamous fictional Jack Benny vault, which was made famous on his radio & TV shows.
Lucy designed a perfect vault, and Jack was willing to sign with Mr. Mooney's bank - just as soon as Jack & Lucy get out of the quicksand, that was up to their chins. The quicksand was the last level of the vault's defense mechanisms.

(although the stage show with Angela Landsbury is now on CD) Its not a bad musical really, it just was released a year or two too late to ride on the back of things like Hello Dolly and such! (Very 1960s musical style is the film) but worth a watch!
Anyway to show how good it is, here is We Need A Little Christmas, performed by Lucy. It will be of interest to Crossroads fans as I know this was featured in the soap sung by Noele Gordon in 1979.

Ball won consecutive Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the series' final two seasons, 1966–67 and 1967–68.
