The Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) is an endangered deer that lives only in the Florida Keys. It is a subspecies of the white-tailed deer (O. virginianus). It is the smallest North American deer.
This deer can be recognized by its characteristic size, smaller than all other white-tailed deer. Adult males (known as bucks) usually weigh 25–34 kg (55–75 lb) and stand about 76 cm (30 in) tall at the shoulder. Adult females (does) usually weigh between 20 and 29 kg (44 and 64 lb) and have an average height of 66 cm (26 in) at the shoulders. The deer is a reddish-brown to grey-brown in color. Antlers are grown by males and shed between February and March and regrown by June. When the antlers are growing, they have a white velvet coating. The species otherwise generally resembles other white-tailed deer in appearance.
Key deer easily swim between islands.
Living close to humans, the Key deer has little of the natural fear of man shown by most of their larger mainland relatives. The deer are often found in residents' yards and along roadsides where tasty plants and flowers grow. This often results in car-to-deer collisions, as the deer are more active (and harder to avoid) at night. It is not unusual to see them at dusk and dawn, especially on lightly inhabited No Name Key, and in the less-populated northern areas of Big Pine Key.
Key may refer to:
Deer (singular and plural) are the ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae. Species in the family include the white-tailed deer, mule deer (such as the black-tailed deer), elk, moose, red deer, reindeer (caribou), fallow deer, roe deer, pudú and chital. Male deer of all species (except the Chinese water deer) and female reindeer grow and shed new antlers each year. In this they differ from permanently horned animals, such as antelope, which are in the same order as deer and may bear a superficial resemblance to them.
The musk deer of Asia and water chevrotain (or mouse deer) of tropical African and Asian forests are not usually regarded as true deer and form their own families: Moschidae and Tragulidae, respectively.
The word deer was originally broader in meaning, but became more specific over time. In Middle English, der (Old English dēor) meant a wild animal of any kind. This was in contrast to cattle, which then meant any sort of domestic livestock that was easy to collect and remove from the land, from the idea of personal-property ownership (rather than real estate property) and related to modern chattel (property) and capital. Cognates of Old English dēor in other dead Germanic languages have the general sense of animal, such as Old High German tior, Old Norse djur or dȳr, Gothic dius, Old Saxon dier, and Old Frisian diar.
While visiting the Florida Keys for Mini Season, we came across a few incredibly adorable Key deer. They are the smallest of the Whitetail Subspecies and live primarily on Big Pine and No Name Key. They are highly protected and have no natural predators, but around 30-50, get killed by cars each year! If you're ever in the area, be sure to keep an eye out, they are amazing little critters!!!!

Well, there was nothing we could do to ward off a very affectionate deer at The Deer Run Inn in Big Pine Key recently. We weren't feeding the deer, she just came up and started licking the salt off of us. So cute and deer to all.
When you think of the Florida Keys images of diverse marine life probably come to mind. However you might be surprised to hear about a special land-loving creature: the Key Deer, a small subspecies of the North American white-tailed deer. For nearly 60 years the National Key Deer Refuge has strived to protect this beloved yet endangered icon of the Florida Keys. Join us as we learn more about this fascinating animal and this organization’s place in the local community.
The National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect and preserve Key deer and other wildlife resources in the Florida Keys. The refuge is located in the lower Florida Keys and currently consists of approximately 9,200 acres of land that includes pine rockland forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh wetlands, and mangrove forests. I visited Big Pine Key to observe and help Key Deer. An Endangered deer on a remote section of the Florida Keys. Here I am driving toward Big Pine, when one crosses the road in front of me. I pulled over to block traffic to make sure he could cross. After I got out of my car to walk him back into the forest to safety and to observe him. Every year dozens of Key Deer are stuck and killed by vehicles. CLICK SHOW MORE There are not many left of these very unique deer left. I apologize for the low quality filming. This was shot with a low quality still camera and was all that I had on hand during the unexpected encounter. I do not own a cellphone, as I consider the bill as money better spent on the animals. _________________ Key Deer only weigh on average 60 pounds. What is so unique about...

Part 1 of my adventures in the keys. I found key deer and more chickens than I could point a lens at This is a good look at what snorkling in the keys looks like during poor weather. You can still see stuff, there is just more sediment kicked up -- lower visibility and clarity. The Overseas Highway is a 113-mile (181.9 km) highway carrying U.S. Route 1 (US 1) through the Florida Keys. Large parts of it were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Completed in 1912, the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The Florida East Coast Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000. Since the 1950s the Overseas Highway has been refurbished into a main coastal highway between the cities of Miami and Key West, offering travelers an exotic roadway through a tropical savanna environment and access to the largest area of coral reefs on th...
Mike Tonkovich, Deer Program Manager, ODNR Division of Wildlife Interest in deer management among the hunting public has never been greater. While some wildlife professionals fear that the current movement may compromise their ability to do their job as a state, federal, or provincial wildlife biologist, I not only welcome the enthusiasm, but encourage it. Unfortunately, success takes more than encouragement; it takes cooperation. Very few properties in Ohio are large enough to meet the year round needs of the white-tailed deer. Consequently, most entrepreneurs find themselves frustrated with poor results as they quickly realize that you cannot manage deer that spend a majority of their time on someone else's property. However, by working together through a deer hunting cooperative with t...

Blindly walking against the outcomes of life
Hallowed
The kiss of decay in steps of two
Empty bleak carrion
Stripped of sensation
Exposing the faith of beyond on your deathbed
We are but worms in the fruit of expiration
The most forbidden fruit of disease
Unkept from dying Lost within a distand fear (Distant feat of dying)
This idol of absolute
Animals of the world feed war
Pathological outcast of Christ
Taking revolution for name
Glassy look of the eyes
Too deep for a living soul to stomach
Images of the afterworld
Leverage within the creation of ruin
We travel through a doorway of nothing
Enter afterlife of inverted faith
Indulging in childhood fears
To enter a mystery of ungodly ascent (Ascend)
The never ending punishment of unfeeling to perish in a death of disregard
Oppressive association in a vague cleansing of the irate
Gold gates of the divine
Breathe more life into vanity
Material power, Human idealism
A living myth of the trials of the abnormal
Winged ugli ness in a shattered prism
Soaring the scaled impiety to lay the trap
With fruit of failure It leads our rebirth into the snake
The darkness bleeds throughout the sky in plagues
A deep breath of a martyr's dream
