Day one of 5 for the Gib Rock Tuna Team, casting at big bluefin tuna at the Northern coast of Spain, The Bay of Biscay, Basque Country.
We had 4 of 6 on top water and 0 of 2 on the jig.I landed 4 fish myself, all over 100kg on a solo fight. Jeez what a birthday gift that was! I had a beautiful take on sunset which chaffed my 150lb leader off early in the fight and there was also a missed take Alain and myself on top water. Hooking these giants was a real workout. They had so much bait and were so engrossed on the small anchovies that they fed very lazy. In slow motion grazing the masses of anchovies and not showing any interest in our lures at all, but with a lot of persistence and experienced hands of Orkatz on the helm I think we did a great job as a team. Slow, gente sweeps with long pauses with the Amegari Leen stickbait was the winner for the day.
All on Racepoint rods with Shimano Stella Reels.

Weather wise we had it all, from calm seas to the slightly heavier stuff with winds gusting 49mph and 4m swells and flying tins of beans, which Troskala a Rival 32 dealt with magnificently.

Independence Of The Seas 23rd April 2012 force 12
This was our first ever holiday cruise, and we went through Force 12 gales in the Bay Of Biscay, the following day, the Captain informed us that we had 150 kph winds and 16 metre waves (that's 100 mph winds and 50 foot waves in old money!). Most of the filming is from our balcony room on deck 8, but some is filmed in the Olive & Twist bar on deck 14.

The Iberians were a set of peoples that Greek and Roman sources (among others, Hecataeus of Miletus, Avienus, Herodotus and Strabo) identified with that name in the eastern and southern coasts of the Iberian peninsula, at least from the 6th century BC. The Roman sources also use the term Hispani to refer to the Iberians.
The term Iberian, as used by the ancient authors, had two distinct meanings. One, more general, referred to all the populations of the Iberian peninsula without regard to ethnic differences (Pre-Indo-European, Celts and non-Celtic Indo-Europeans, such as the Lusitanians). The other, more restricted ethnic sense, refers to the people living in the eastern and southern coasts of the Iberian peninsula, which by the 6th century BC had absorbed cultural influences from the Phoenicians and the Greeks. This non-Indo-European cultural group spoke the Iberian language from the 7th to the 1st century BC.
Other related peoples often termed Iberian are the Turdetani, who were descendants of the Bronze age Tartessos culture, the Vascones and the Indo-European Lusitanians. The rest of the peninsula was inhabited by Celts or Celtiberians groups.
Spain is a sovereign state largely located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, with archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, and several small territories on and near the north African coast. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north and northeast by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean. Along with France and Morocco, it is one of only three countries to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. Extending to 1,214 km (754 mi), the Portugal–Spain border is the longest uninterrupted border within the European Union.
Spanish territory includes two archipelagos: the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast. It also includes two major exclaves, Ceuta and Melilla, in continental North Africa; and the islands and peñones (rocks) of Alborán, Alhucemas, Chafarinas and Vélez de la Gomera. With an area of 505,990 km2 (195,360 sq mi), Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the fourth largest country in Europe. By population, Spain is the sixth largest in Europe and the fifth in the European Union.
Modern humans first arrived in the Iberian Peninsula around 35,000 years ago. Iberian cultures along with ancient Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian settlements developed on the peninsula until it came under Roman rule around 200 BCE, after which the region was named Hispania. In the Middle Ages, the area was conquered by Germanic tribes and later by the Moors. Spain emerged as a unified country in the 15th century, following the marriage of the Catholic Monarchs and the completion of the centuries-long reconquest, or Reconquista, of the peninsula from the Moors in 1492. In the early modern period, Spain became one of history's first global colonial empires, leaving a vast cultural and linguistic legacy that includes over 500 million Spanish speakers, making Spanish the world's second most spoken first language.
Spain is a democracy organised in the form of a parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy. It is a middle power and a developed country with the world's fourteenth largest economy by nominal GDP and sixteenth largest by purchasing power parity. It is a member of the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the Council of Europe (CoE), the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and many other international organisations.

Story on Prince of Wales (future King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) setting out on a royal tour; but footage is more of life aboard ship for British sailors / British Royal Navy.
Intertitle reads: "The last good-byes said, Captain Hope gave the order to cast off."
MS back view Prince of Wales with ship's officers on bridge of HMS Repulse as ship casts off.
Intertitle reads: "As the 'Repulse' proceeded to sea, the Prince returned the salutes from vessels in the harbour."
Prince of Wales salutes as ship's Captain, Vice Admiral George Hope, looks through binoculars.
Intertitle reads: "Forty-eight hours later, in the Bay of Biscay, the 'Repulse' passed through the lines of the Atlantic Fleet - homeward bound from Gibraltar."
Travelling shot from Repulse, passing line of ships of the Atlantic Fleet in the Bay of Biscay; the Prince looks at them through a telescope with an officer.
Intertitle reads: "The stately line of cruisers was followed by a strange looking vessel - the aeroplane carrier 'Argus'." (New intertitle) "Now the voyage had begun in earnest - and we settled down to the normal routine of life on board."
M/S of a sailor on deck, silhouetted against the sunset as he holds a gushing water pipe - it looks like he is having a pee! Two other sailors enter shot and help to wash the deck with a bucket and broom.
Intertitle reads: "After our morning clean down came 'Divisions' - Morning Parade - with inspection by the Prince."
High angle shots from the upper deck of the Prince inspecting lines of sailors.
Intertitle reads: "Then followed a muster for morning prayers."
Various shots from morning prayer service on forecastle; chaplain with officers behind; sailors standing with caps off.
Intertitle reads: "On... caps!"
L/S of the sailors putting their caps on.
Intertitle reads: "The impressive service in the clean morning air was followed by exercises."
After service; sailors jog round the deck; in BG a group on forecastle does exercises.
Intertitle reads: "As the 'Repulse' headed south into tropical seas we were glad to get into hot-weather kit - and out of it when opportunity offered."
Recreation aboard the Repulse: sailors go for a dip in a swimming pool rigged up on deck. Shots of the men swimming; splashing and climbing on a bar just over the pool.
Intertitle reads: "Our first port of call was Bathurst, the capital of the Gambia Colony, where we arrived on April 4th."
Tracking shot of the coastline at Bathurst taken from the ship; Africans walk along by the shore. Africans watch the 'Repulse' come in to the pier. The Prince and other officers in white uniforms come ashore. A banner is strung across the path to the city walls reading 'The Gambia Heartily Greets Your Royal Highness'.
Intertitle reads: "Young Bathurst - as represented by the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides - paid vociferous testimony to its --- loyalty." (title is decomposing and impossible to read.)
Various shots of Gambian children, waving Union Jack flags and singing.
Intertitle reads: "Then, to the strains of a weird and wonderful orchestra, the Prince received distinguished notabilities."
Various shots of the Prince standing under a canopied-dais with some dignitaries, shaking hands with African men who come to the stand one by one; African men holding traditional instruments watch. African women strain for a view of the Prince. The Prince shakes hands with several European men - could be veterans?
Intertitle reads: "The Prince displayed an almost professional interest in the various musical instruments."
M/S of the Prince standing with a group of men, looking down at the African instruments. One of the men stands and plays his instrument; the Prince watches, then he and his entourage move on.
Intertitle reads: "Buried in his art, our star performer had not realised that the Prince had moved off in search of other attractions."
M/S of the man realising the Prince has moved on, then he starts to play again.
Intertitle reads: "But Bathurst's red letter day was drawing to a close - and soon all roads led to the waterside, where the Colony gathered to wish the Prince bon voyage."
Various shots of townspeople walking towards the waterfront to say farewell to the Prince.
Note: parts of the film are decomposing. Some sections of the original story may be missing; earlier database record mentioned a sequence where sailors watch as mail is brought to the ship.

Every aspect of life in Asturias is influenced by the Cantabric Sea (Bay of Biscay) from its unique weather patterns and temperate climate to industry, food and more recently, tourism and leisure.
Asturias has an extensive coastline with many beautiful beaches and fishing towns to explore. It also has an incredible network of rivers meandering through the mountainous landscapes and washing nutrients and food into the sea which creates a frenzy of sea life and makes Asturias a fishing enthusiasts dream.
You can fish just about anywhere there is water provided you have the right licence which is easy and cheap to obtain. It is common to see the locals beach casting and spinning along the coastline or pole and fly fishing on the rivers but if you are after big game fish then you'll need a boat to take you out to deep water to find Tuna or Bonito del Norte.
There are quite a few species of tuna that feed close to the Asturian coast, the most popular been Bonito del Norte or small Tuna known locally as "Monos". The best time to fish for Tuna is towards the end of the summer or early autumn mainly because the sea is at its calmest.
Boat rental is available from the marinas of Gijon or Aviles and prices vary from boat to boat. Most of the boats can accommodate up to 10 people but there are larger boats for bigger groups. Being part of a larger group will help keep prices per person down. Lunch is usually provided along with drinks (Champagne, beers, soft drinks etc.) making it a great day out for a group of friends.
A day out fishing for Tuna is a wonderful experience. Once you are 30km from the Asturian coastline, you will chance upon whale pods surfacing for air and an incredible amount of seabirds scouring the sea looking for small fish forced to the surface by the tuna. Once you see this you'll know that you are about to catch some big fish.....it's all very Hemingwayesque.
To give you a taste of what to expect when deep sea fishing in Asturias we joined up with keen fisherman Ramon Nicholson and hitched a ride on one of the boats competing in a local fishing competition from the port of Gijon. Filming this was a real joy and the guys on the boat easy going and great fun. From the moment you set off you get a sense of adventure and within a short distance from the coast you'll start to see seascapes and nature that is normally only available to us via documentaries on TV.
If you wish to try deep sea fishing in Asturias for yourself and need more information then contact us at
info@whereisasturias.com
There isn't any set rental company that deals with the boats so you will need a bit of local knowledge to organise it and that's what we are here for.
Enjoy the video and let us know what you think.

The city is in the north of the Basque Country, on the southern coast of the Bay of Biscay. San Sebastián's picturesque shoreline makes it a popular beach resort. The seaside environment is enhanced by hilly surroundings that are easily accessible, i.e., Urgull (at the heart of the city by the seashore), romantic Mount Ulia extending east to Pasaia, Mount Adarra rising proud far on the south and Igeldo, overlooking the bay from the west.
The city sits at the mouth of the River Urumea, Donostia having been built to a large extent over the river's wetlands during the last two centuries. In fact, the city centre and the districts of Amara Berri and Riberas de Loiola lie on such terrain and the former bed of the river, diverted to its current canalized course in the first half of the 20th century.[9]
San Sebastián (Spanish: [san seβasˈtjan]; French: Saint-Sébastien) or Donostia (Basque: [doˈnos̺tia])[3] is a coastal city and municipality located in the Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. It lies on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, 20 km (12 miles) from the French border. Capital city of Gipuzkoa, the municipality's population is 186,409 (2012), with its metropolitan area reaching 436,500 (2010).[4] Locals call themselves donostiarra (singular), both in Spanish[5] and Basque.
The main economic activities are commerce and tourism, and it is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Spain.[6] Despite the city’s small size, events such as the San Sebastián International Film Festival have given it an international dimension. San Sebastián, along with Wrocław, Poland, will be the European Capital of Culture in 2016.[7]

The Pyrenees is a range of mountains in southwest Europe that forms a natural border between France and Spain. It separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of continental Europe, and extends for about 491 km (305 mi) from the Bay of Biscay (Cap Higuer) to the Mediterranean Sea (Cap de Creus).
For the most part, the main crest forms a massive divider between France and Spain, with the small country of Andorra sandwiched in between. The Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Navarre have historically extended on both sides of the mountain range, with smaller northern portions now in France and larger southern parts now in Spain.

ORCA is one of Europe’s leading whale and dolphin conservation charities and between March and September every year, some of their wildlife officers join us on board our ferries to Spain to monitor the whale and dolphin populations in the Bay of Biscay. But they’re not on board to just gather data, they’re also here to share their amazing knowledge of these magnificent creatures with our travellers by whale and dolphin spotting out on deck and giving talks too.
The Bay of Biscay is one of the top 5 places on Earth for spotting whales and dolphins – we’ve even spotted blue whales and fin whales, the largest and second largest animals in the world! Bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, killer whales and more are regularly spotted from the decks of our ferries to Spain so why not join us on one of our whale and dolphin spotting mini cruises and help ORCA track the marine wildlife and protect the planet for the future?
