South Korea's miraculous economic development "one of the biggest mysteries of the modern world." It was no mystery to the Koreans. "Park Chung Hee" The miracle worker of the Korea. South Koreans refer to this growth as the Miracle on the Han River.
Korea's infrastructure was destroyed by the Korean War (1950-53) and millions lived in poverty at the time, with thousands of unemployed people struggling to fulfill basic needs. When General Park Chung-hee seized power in 1961, South Korea had per capita income of less than $100 per year. During that time, South Korea was mostly dependent on foreign aid.
President Park Chung-hee's "Saemaeul (New village) movement" focused on developing rural Korea. It is considered by many Koreans as a symbol of national pride and "can-do" spirit. Besides the Saemaeul movement, the Korean government carried out another effective economic development plan called the Five-Year Plan. There were more than 5 plans created, and they were designed to revive the economy. Each of the plans contributed tremendously in industrialization and enlarging the marketplaces of South Korea. The strong leadership of the Park government and the effective use of cheap labor started a spark in the South Korean economy. Having almost no natural resources and always suffering from overpopulation in its small territory, which deterred continued population growth and the formation of a large internal consumer market, South Korea adapted an export-oriented economic strategy to fuel its economy. In less than four decades, this "hopeless" city was completely transformed into a world leading global city, a centre of business and commerce in Asia and a highly developed world city and economic hub, having among the most advanced technological infrastructure in the world. In 2010,GDP per capita of $30,000 and South Korea seventh largest exporter and tenth largest importer in the world. Now days South Korea is a high-income developed country and has a market economy which ranks 15th in the world.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service confirmed on Friday that North Korea successfully hacked the smartphones of 40 government officials.
It was also revealed that cyberattacks from North Korea have doubled in the last month...and the agency has called on South Korea's lawmakers to pass the long-stalled anti-cyberterrorism bill so that they can better defend against future attacks.
Kwon Jang-Ho has this report.
At a closed door parliamentary briefing, South Korea's National Intelligence Service informed several lawmakers about recent cyberattacks carried about by North Korea.
Around 300 government and military officials were sent emails, pretending to be from the presidential office, as well as the foreign and unification ministries.
The emails contained malicious software, and the intelligence agency said 40 smartphones were infected.
Through the malware, hackers were able to obtain phone records and text messages, as well as listen to phone conversations.
"When these smartphones get hacked, all the information in them is exposed. And it's the consequences from that information leak that becomes a worry."
North Korean hackers also attempted to access the computer systems of South Korea's rail networks and financial institutions, but they were successfully stopped by the agency.
The number of cyberattacks from North Korea were said to have doubled over the last month, and the intelligence agency said there are hundreds of thousands of cyberattacks or hacking attempts made on a daily basis.
Although most of them are stopped, about one to two percent fall through the cracks.
The NIS stressed the need for an anti-cyberterrorism bill. However, the bill is currently being stalled by the opposition party, due to fears that it would allow the Intelligence Service to have access to private data of South Korean people as well.
"The NIS made a request to lawmakers to pass the anti-cyberterrorism bill quickly, so that we can suitably defend against cyber terror and hacking."
The intelligence agency warned, with the recent sanctions that have been imposed on North Korea, further cyberattacks, and other provocations, such missile launches, cannot be ruled out.

North Korea threatened to wipe out the South Korean government Tuesday... a day after a South Korean official said the North "must disappear soon."
South Korea's Defense Ministry Spokesperson Kim Min-seok had made an unsually blunt remark at a press briefing on Monday... saying North Korea should not be regarded as a country and should vanish as soon as possible.
In a statement, the North's powerful National Defense Commission accused Kim of speaking for South Korean President Park Geun-hye to inspire an "all-out" inter-Korean confrontation.
It described President Park and South Korean military officials as "the root of evil" and vowed to wipe them out entirely with merciless force.

How unstable and insecure must a so-called free country be to fear a little guy in Texas? Article 21 of their Constitution guarantees free speech only for their citizens. It reads in part:
(1) All citizens shall enjoy freedom of speech and the press, and freedom of assembly and association."
It seems South Korea is not the only nation to enjoy a façade of freedom, because recently the world's largest democracy, India arrested seven people for their expression of free speech.
A blockhead was blocked by blockheads in South Korea. Now how silly is that? By blocking me they in essence elevated my status. Thank you to the government of South Korea for this elevated status. I feel as if I was awarded the Legion of Honor. Viva la South Korea!

When General Park Chung-hee seized power in 1961, South Korea had per capita income of less than $100 per year. During that time, South Korea was mostly dependent on foreign aid.
President Park Chung-hee's "Saemaeul (New village) movement" focused on developing rural Korea. It is considered by many Koreans as a symbol of national pride and "can-do" spirit. Besides the Saemaeul movement, the Korean government carried out another effective economic development plan called the Five-Year Plan. There were more than 5 plans created, and they were designed to revive the economy. Each of the plans contributed tremendously in industrialization and enlarging the marketplaces of South Korea. The strong leadership of the Park government and the effective use of cheap labor started a spark in the South Korean economy. Having almost no natural resources and always suffering from overpopulation in its small territory, which deterred continued population growth and the formation of a large internal consumer market, South Korea adapted an export-oriented economic strategy to fuel its economy. South Korea's National Intelligence Service confirmed on Friday that North Korea successfully hacked the smartphones of 40 government officials.
It was also revealed that cyberattacks from North Korea have doubled in the last month...and the agency has called on South Korea's lawmakers to pass the long-stalled anti-cyberterrorism bill so that they can better defend against future attacks.
Kwon Jang-Ho has this report.
At a closed door parliamentary briefing, South Korea's National Intelligence Service informed several lawmakers about recent cyberattacks carried about by North Korea.
Around 300 government and military officials were sent emails, pretending to be from the presidential office, as well as the foreign and unification ministries.
The emails contained malicious software, and the intelligence agency said 40 smartphones were infected.
Through the malware, hackers were able to obtain phone records and text messages, as well as listen to phone conversations.
"When these smartphones get hacked, all the information in them is exposed. And it's the consequences from that information leak that becomes a worry."
North Korean hackers also attempted to access the computer systems of South Korea's rail networks and financial institutions, but they were successfully stopped by the agency.
The number of cyberattacks from North Korea were said to have doubled over the last month, and the intelligence agency said there are hundreds of thousands of cyberattacks or hacking attempts made on a daily basis.
Although most of them are stopped, about one to two percent fall through the cracks.
The NIS stressed the need for an anti-cyberterrorism bill. However, the bill is currently being stalled by the opposition party, due to fears that it would allow the Intelligence Service to have access to private data of South Korean people as well.
"The NIS made a request to lawmakers to pass the anti-cyberterrorism bill quickly, so that we can suitably defend against cyber terror and hacking."
The intelligence agency warned, with the recent sanctions that have been imposed on North Korea, further cyberattacks, and other provocations, such missile launches, cannot be ruled out.

How unstable and insecure must a so-called free country be to fear a little guy in Texas? Article 21 of their Constitution guarantees free speech only for their citizens. It reads in part:

It seems South Korea is not the only nation to enjoy a façade of freedom, because recently the world's largest democracy, India arrested seven people for their expression of free speech.
A blockhead was blocked by blockheads in South Korea. Now how silly is that? By blocking me they in essence elevated my status. Thank you to the government of South Korea for this elevated status. I feel as if I was awarded the Legion of Honor. Viva la South Korea!

The Korean government unveiled plans to give financial support worth over 500 U.S. dollars for active job seekers, as part of efforts to tackle youth unemployment and revitalize economic growth.
"Youth unemployment is as high as nine percent, and some young people are even giving up on finding a job because of interview expenses. To offer them support, we plan to provide up to 24,000 job seekers with 540 dollars during a three month period."
The unemployment allowance aims to help cover costs that include housing expenses, transportation, and job interview expenses such as renting formal suits.
The Minister of Employment and Labor also emphasized that the allowance is only for active job seekers, and it is part of a broader package that offers more than just financial support.
"We will provide employment consultation, vocational training, and job placement to help young people find a job that suits their aptitude."
The so-called "Employment Success Package" program will provide allowances for those who belong to either of the following two categories.
The first category comprises basic livelihood security recipients and low-incomers earning less than 150% of the minimum costs of living.
The second category is for job seekers aged between 18 and 34 and middle-aged people who earn less than 250% of the minimum costs of living.
The funding will come from the Youth Hope Foundation.
As of now, only 14,000 from the first category and 10,000 from the second category will be selected to receive the financial support.

The implementation of Seoul and Tokyo's landmark agreement on Japan's wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women has made a step forward.
South Korea's Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida held a phone conversation Friday evening,... which came on the heels of a director general-level meeting in Seoul earlier this week that reportedly resulted in significant progress on the follow-up measures to the so-called "comfort women" deal.
This included talks on the 1 billion yen or roughly 9-point-8 million U.S. dollars that the Japanese government promised the South Korean government to be used for the sex slave victims.
"Minister Kishida mentioned that the Japanese government has decided to swiftly provide the agreed amount, once domestic procedure in Tokyo is completed."
Meanwhile, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported that the two sides agreed on HOW the money will be used.
According to Japanese wire Jiji Press,... it'll be limited for medical and welfare means.
But Seoul's Foreign Ministry said details are yet to be decided on by the "Reconciliation and Healing" foundation,... which was launched in Seoul last month,... through which Japan's money will be transferred.
However, not all of the 40 surviving victims,... accept the establishment of the foundation and the landmark deal.
The two foreign ministers agreed Friday to continue close cooperation to heal the wounds of the victims and retrieve their dignity.
Yun and Kishida also shared their concern on North Korea and its missile and nuclear provocations,... as well as work on a possible tri-lateral South Korea- China-Japan summit later this year.

Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency reported Thursday that intelligence and government sources say... analysis of the increase in the number of Chinese vessels in waters near the de facto maritime border between the two Koreas,... shows around two-and-a-half thousand Chinese fishing boats are operating in the East and West Sea through the deal with Pyongyang.
The South Korean government wasn't able to confirm the validity of the report.
"Chinese fishing boats are operating in the area."
"Related ministries are sharing information on the issue,... but we ask for your understanding that we cannot provide you with details, as it's intelligence information."
In early July, the National Intelligence Service reported to the National Assembly that North Korea had sold rights worth 30 million U.S. dollars to around 15-hundred Chinese boats.
North Korea makes an estimated 75 million dollars per year from the sale of fishing rights, according to a source.
The source also said Pyongyang sold its rights through third-party trade firms,... but plans to sell them directly in the future.
The hard currency is said to be funneled directly into the coffers of the Kim Jong-un regime which is thought to be struggling financially due to the toughest-ever international sanctions imposed on the North for its nuclear and missile provocations.
Meanwhile, the North Korean leader was known to have encouraged increased fishery production for years to boost the local economy.

It happened during talks on Tuesday between Seoul's top diplomat in China and Beijing's top man on inter-Korean affairs.

South Korea's top diplomat in Beijing has clarified Seoul's stance on the THAAD missile defense system to China's special representative for the Korean Peninsula.
South Korean Ambassador to China Kim Jang-soo and China's top nuclear envoy Wu Dawei's meeting marks the first time the South Korean government has delivered its position to Beijing through an official diplomatic channel since the THAAD deployment to South Korea was confirmed last month.
"The two have exchanged views on North Korea's missile launch and the situation on the Korean peninsula. China on its side has reiterated its stance on the deployment of the THAAD battery to South Korea."
Beijing has long been against the deployment of THAAD to South Korea citing it will undermine regional stability and Chinese security interests.
And since the announcement of the site in South Korea where THAAD is expected to be stationed, Beijing has seemingly started a backlash on South Korea's travel and entertainment industries,… while staying reluctant to punish Pyongyang for its continuing missile provocations.
Ambassador Kim's move is being seen as a more active approach by the South Korean government to deal with China's intensifying criticism,... as opposed to its earlier defensive mode.
It also appears to be a shift away from the "parliamentary diplomacy" opted by six South Korean lawmakers of the main opposition,... as they traveled to Beijing this week.
However, despite South Korea's diplomatic efforts to ease tensions with China,…. Beijing doesn't seem to be quelling its strong stance against the THAAD deployment.
Chinese experts who have been in the forefront of raising their voice against THAAD have reportedly emphasized the problems of the system's radar.
South Korean opposition lawmakers on their side are said to have explained how the two nations should resolve this difficult situation together.

The first news Pyongyang's state media delivered on Choe Ryong-hae's diplomatic activity after his attendance to the opening ceremony of the Rio games,... was that the senior official met with interim President of Brazil Michel Temer.
According to the Korean Central News Agency Choe expressed the regime's desire to develop the cooperative friendship with Brazil,... and that Temer emphasized the Brazilian government will develop that bilateral relationship.
Thursday through Friday, Choe reportedly met with not only International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and other high Olympic officials,... but also heads and officials from Switzerland, San Marino, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, and Zambia.
""These meetings are not only seen as a way to promote North Korea as a strong sports power,... but appear to be an attempt to wiggle out of the international isolation Pyongyang is facing."
South Korea's government says,... the North's actions are seen as inevitable for the regime,... as it's facing limitations due to the strong sanctions imposed over its nuclear and missile provocations.
"North Korea seems to be using the sporting event as a means to show that it's like any other country, doing what it can to try and improve its global image."

The name Korea is derived from Goryeo (or Koryo), a name used by ancient and medieval kingdoms. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and north-west, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers. A small section of the Tumen River also forms North Korea's short border with Russia to the northeast.[6] The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea. The legitimacy of this border is not accepted by either side, as both states claim to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. In 1945, when Japan was defeated in World War II, Korea was divided into two occupied zones, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south by the United States. Negotiations on unification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. The conflicting claims of sovereignty led to the Korean War in 1950. An armistice in 1953 committed both to a cease-fire, but the two countries remain officially at war because a formal peace treaty was never signed.[7] Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.[8]
The DPRK officially describes itself as a socialist state[9] and holds elections, but it is widely considered a dictatorship and has been described as totalitarian and Stalinist[18][19][20] with an elaborate cult of personality around the Kim family. The Workers' Party of Korea, led by a member of the ruling family,[20] holds power in the state and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland of which all political officers are required to be a member.[21] Juche, an ideology of self-reliance initiated by the country's first President, Kim Il-sung, became the official state ideology, replacing Marxism–Leninism, when the country adopted a new constitution in 1972.[22][23] In 2009, references to communism (Chosŏn'gŭl: 공산주의) were removed from the country's constitution.[24][dubious – discuss]
The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms, and most services such as healthcare, education, housing and food production are state funded or subsidized.[25] In the 1990s North Korea suffered from a famine and continues to struggle with food production.[26]

The Korean peninsula had been occupied by Japan from 1910 to 1945. After the defeat of Japan in World War II, the Korean peninsula was occupied by the Soviet Union in the North and the United States in the South. The dividing line was the 38th parallel north.

The Soviets preferred Korean Communists who had spent the war years in the Soviet Union in power, rather than the Communist Party of Korea. Kim Il-sung is named head of the North Korean Provisional People's Committee in February 1946. Kim then became Prime Minister, a post which he held until 1972, before becoming President.

July 1950 - UN Forces are formed. UN Forces are driven back to the Pusan Perimeter

Korea is facing a drastic increase in computer-game related crime and violence. In an attempt to tackle the nation’s addiction, the government have set up a rehab centre where technology is confiscated and the males must learn to connect with one another through various group activities. For the boys, 27 days without access to electronic devices is daunting. “There’s no internet, no TV, so now I don’t know what to do”, Chan Woo tells his mentor. Will the digital detox be a success?

The largest-ever exercise was aimed to demonstrate once again the might of the Paektusan army to bring the most miserable doom to the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean puppet group of traitors through the above-said striking action for turning into a sea of flames Seoul, the den of the Park Geun Hye group of traitors who dared stage the undisguised "precision striking drill" targeting the supreme headquarters of the Korean revolution and the office of the WPK Central Committee.
Involved in the drill were more than one hundred long-range artillery pieces of various calibers including the Juche artillery pieces of the elite artillery units of the large combined units on the front.
Prior to the start of the drill, General Pak Yong Sik, minister of the People's Armed Forces, made a speech.
The firing drill of artillery pieces today is the one for devotedly defending the Supreme Commander and the retaliatory one of justice to demonstrate the tremendous might of the Paektusan Army to inflict the most miserable doom upon traitor Park Geun Hye, he said.
He called upon the elite artillery combatants of the large combined units on the front to make large intensive strikes with long-range artillery pieces, reflecting the faith of devotedly defending the leader and the unshakable resolution to annihilate the enemy, and thus blow up the Chongwadae and the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul bossed by the Park Geun Hye puppet group of traitors.
Kim Jong Un mounted a field observation post and received a report on the plan for the drill before issuing an order to start it.
The moment, the artillery pieces opened fire with deafening roar, fiercely pounding the imaginary targets--the Chongwadae and the puppet reactionary ruling machines in Seoul.
Watching the brave artillerymen on the front mercilessly hit the targets, he said they are very good at firing. I am pleased with their very accurate striking, he added.
Expressing great satisfaction over the successful drill, he extended the thanks of the KPA Supreme Commander to all units which participated in the drill.
He said that the KPA should prepare all service personnel as a-match-for-a-hundred fighters capable of fighting actual battles by intensifying their training just as the anti-Japanese guerrillas did in Mt. Paektu and keep itself highly alerted so that it may mercilessly pound the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul, the cesspool of evils, and advance to accomplish the historic cause of national reunification, once it receives an order for attack.

Kim Jong Un Guides Large-scale Intensive Striking Drill of Long-range Artillery Pieces
Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA) Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, guided the large-scale intensive striking drill of long-range artillery pieces of the KPA large combined units on the front for blowing up the Chongwadae and the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul.
The largest-ever exercise was aimed to demonstrate once again the might of the Paektusan army to bring the most miserable doom to the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean puppet group of traitors through the above-said striking action for turning into a sea of flames Seoul, the den of the Park Geun Hye group of traitors who dared stage the undisguised "precision striking drill" targeting the supreme headquarters of the Korean revolution and the office of the WPK Central Committee.
Involved in the drill were more than one hundred long-range artillery pieces of various calibers including the Juche artillery pieces of the elite artillery units of the large combined units on the front.
Prior to the start of the drill, General Pak Yong Sik, minister of the People's Armed Forces, made a speech.
The firing drill of artillery pieces today is the one for devotedly defending the Supreme Commander and the retaliatory one of justice to demonstrate the tremendous might of the Paektusan Army to inflict the most miserable doom upon traitor Park Geun Hye, he said.
He called upon the elite artillery combatants of the large combined units on the front to make large intensive strikes with long-range artillery pieces, reflecting the faith of devotedly defending the leader and the unshakable resolution to annihilate the enemy, and thus blow up the Chongwadae and the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul bossed by the Park Geun Hye puppet group of traitors.
Kim Jong Un mounted a field observation post and received a report on the plan for the drill before issuing an order to start it.
The moment, the artillery pieces opened fire with deafening roar, fiercely pounding the imaginary targets--the Chongwadae and the puppet reactionary ruling machines in Seoul.
Watching the brave artillerymen on the front mercilessly hit the targets, he said they are very good at firing. I am pleased with their very accurate striking, he added.
Expressing great satisfaction over the successful drill, he extended the thanks of the KPA Supreme Commander to all units which participated in the drill.
He said that the KPA should prepare all service personnel as a-match-for-a-hundred fighters capable of fighting actual battles by intensifying their training just as the anti-Japanese guerrillas did in Mt. Paektu and keep itself highly alerted so that it may mercilessly pound the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul, the cesspool of evils, and advance to accomplish the historic cause of national reunification, once it receives an order for attack.
