GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. Just like computers, mobile phones have evolved over time. There were first generation mobile phones in the 70's, there are 2nd generation mobile phones in the 80's and 90's, and now there are 3rd gen phones which are about to enter the Indian market. GSM is called a 2nd generation, or 2G communications technology.
GSM Network Architecture
- the GSM network architecture consists of different elements that all interact together to form the overall GSM system. These include elements like the base-station, controller, MSC, AuC, HLR, VLR, etc.

The GSM technical specifications define the different elements within the GSM network architecture. It defines the different elements and the ways in which they interact to enable the overall system operation to be maintained.
The GSM network architecture is now well established and with the other later cellular systems now established and other new ones being deployed, the basic GSM network architecture has been updated to interface to the network elements required by these systems.
Despite the developments of the newer systems, the basic GSM system architecture has been maintained, and the network elements described below perform the same functions as they did when the original GSM system was launched in the early 1990s.GSM network architecture elements
The GSM network architecture as defined in the GSM specifications can be grouped into four main areas:
Mobile station (MS)
Base-Station Subsystem (BSS)
Network and Switching Subsystem (NSS)
Operation and Support Subsystem (OSS)
The different elements of the GSM network operate together and the user is not aware of the different entities within the system.
Mobile station
Mobile stations (MS), mobile equipment (ME) or as they are most widely known, cell or mobile phones are the section of a GSM cellular network that the user sees and operates. In recent years their size has fallen dramatically while the level of functionality has greatly increased. A further advantage is that the time between charges has significantly increased.
There are a number of elements to the cell phone, although the two main elements are the main hardware and the SIM.
The hardware itself contains the main elements of the mobile phone including the display, case, battery, and the electronics used to generate the signal, and process the data receiver and to be transmitted. It also contains a number known as the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). This is installed in the phone at manufacture and "cannot" be changed. It is accessed by the network during registration to check whether the equipment has been reported as stolen.
The SIM or Subscriber Identity Module contains the information that provides the identity of the user to the network. It contains are variety of information including a number known as the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI).
Base Station Subsystem (BSS)
The Base Station Subsystem (BSS) section of the GSM network architecture that is fundamentally associated with communicating with the mobiles on the network. It consists of two elements:
Base Transceiver Station (BTS): The BTS used in a GSM network comprises the radio transmitter receivers, and their associated antennas that transmit and receive to directly communicate with the mobiles. The BTS is the defining element for each cell. The BTS communicates with the mobiles and the interface between the two is known as the Um interface with its associated protocols.
Base Station Controller (BSC): The BSC forms the next stage back into the GSM network. It controls a group of BTSs, and is often co-located with one of the BTSs in its group. It manages the radio resources and controls items such as handover within the group of BTSs, allocates channels and the like. It communicates with the BTSs over what is termed the Abis interface.

В этом видео я продемонстрировал процесс приема и декодирования пакетов стандарта GSM с использованием трансивера HackRF One и набора утилит GR-GSM, также здесь показан процесс установки Linux Ubuntu 5.10 на виртуальную машину VirtualBox.
Я принимал все используя направленную антенну Petra BB 75 (но и та что идет в комплекте HackRF One (ANT500) тоже подойдет). В ролике я буду работать с GNURadio с пакетом OSMOCom, также с WireShark для анализа GSM-пакетов и с другим ПО которое я установил автоматически с помощью скриптов pybombs. Хочу заметить что вы сможете повторить мои действия даже без HackRF One и без специфической антенны т.к. все будет работать и с другими SDR приемниками, например с RTL-SDR, BladeRF и т.п.
Также следует помнить что одно дело просто декодировать GSM и совсем другое расшифровывать данные GSM т.к. расшифровка и перехват чужих переговоров и СМС являются нарушением закона! А что-бы обезопасить себя от перехвата GSM-трафика просто пользуйтесь более современными протоколами которые защищены гораздо серьезнее. Надеюсь видео будет вам интересно или полезно!

This video will show you how to build an automatic GSM auto dialler triggered by a car/ home security/ fire alarm.
There is No Programming required and requires only some simple modifications to a mobile phone and some soldering.
Great for when you are away on holiday etc... when the alarm is triggered, the phone will call any number you set and let you know that your home/ car alarm has been triggered.
A GSM auto dialler may reduce the cost of your home/ car insurance.
*A simple 555 monostable circuit may be needed to create a short pulse from alarm panels that put out a continuous high signal*

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications, originally Groupe Spécial Mobile), is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies for second generation (2G) digital cellular networks. Developed as a replacement for first generation (1G) analog cellular networks, the GSM standard originally described a digital, circuit switched network optimized for full duplex voice telephony. The standard was expanded over time to include first circuit switched data transport, then packet data transport via GPRS (General Packet Radio Services). Packet data transmission speeds were later increased via EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) referred as EGPRS. The GSM standard is more improved after the development of third generation (3G) UMTS standard developed by the 3GPP. GSM networks will evolve further as they begin to incorporate fourth generation (4G) LTE Advanced standards. "GSM" is a trademark owned by the GSM Association.
Early European analog cellular networks employed an uncoordinated mix of technologies and protocols that varied from country to country, preventing interoperability of subscriber equipment and increasing complexity for equipment manufacturers who had to contend with varying standards from a fragmented market. The work to develop a European standard for digital cellular voice telephony began in 1982 when the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) created the Groupe Spécial Mobile committee and provided a permanent group of technical support personnel, based in Paris. In 1987, 15 representatives from 13 European countries signed a memorandum of understanding to develop and deploy a common cellular telephone system across Europe. The foresight of deciding to develop a continental standard paid off, eventually resulting in a unified, open, standard-based network larger than that in the United States.

There are a number of elements to the cell phone, although the two main elements are the main hardware and the SIM.
The hardware itself contains the main elements of the mobile phone including the display, case, battery, and the electronics used to generate the signal, and process the data receiver and to be transmitted. It also contains a number known as the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). This is installed in the phone at manufacture and "cannot" be changed. It is accessed by the network during registration to check whether the equipment has been reported as stolen.
The SIM or Subscriber Identity Module contains the information that provides the identity of the user to the network. It contains are variety of information including a number known as the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI).
Base Station Subsystem (BSS)
The Base Station Subsystem (BSS) section of the GSM network architecture that is fundamentally associated with communicating with the mobiles on the network. It consists of two elements:
Base Transceiver Station (BTS): The BTS used in a GSM network comprises the radio transmitter receivers, and their associated antennas that transmit and receive to directly communicate with the mobiles. The BTS is the defining element for each cell. The BTS communicates with the mobiles and the interface between the two is known as the Um interface with its associated protocols.
Base Station Controller (BSC): The BSC forms the next stage back into the GSM network. It controls a group of BTSs, and is often co-located with one of the BTSs in its group. It manages the radio resources and controls items such as handover within the group of BTSs, allocates channels and the like. It communicates with the BTSs over what is termed the Abis interface.

В этом видео я продемонстрировал процесс приема и декодирования пакетов стандарта GSM с использованием трансивера HackRF One и набора утилит GR-GSM, также здесь показан процесс установки Linux Ubuntu 5.10 на виртуальную машину VirtualBox.
Я принимал все используя направленную антенну Petra BB 75 (но и та что идет в комплекте HackRF One (ANT500) тоже подойдет). В ролике я буду работать с GNURadio с пакетом OSMOCom, также с WireShark для анализа GSM-пакетов и с другим ПО которое я установил автоматически с помощью скриптов pybombs. Хочу заметить что вы сможете повторить мои действия даже без HackRF One и без специфической антенны т.к. все будет работать и с другими SDR приемниками, например с RTL-SDR, BladeRF и т.п.
Также следует помнить что одно дело просто декодировать GSM и совсем другое расшифровывать данные GSM т.к. расшифровка и перехват чужих переговоров и СМС являются нарушением закона! А что-бы обезопасить себя от перехвата GSM-трафика просто пользуйтесь более современными протоколами которые защищены гораздо серьезнее. Надеюсь видео будет вам интересно или полезно!

В этом видео я продемонстрировал процесс приема и декодирования пакетов стандарта GSM с использованием трансивера HackRF One и набора утилит GR-GSM, также здесь показан процесс установки Linux Ubuntu 5.10 на виртуальную машину VirtualBox.
Я принимал все используя направленную антенну Petra BB 75 (но и та что идет в комплекте HackRF One (ANT500) тоже подойдет). В ролике я буду работать с GNURadio с пакетом OSMOCom, также с WireShark для анализа GSM-пакетов и с другим ПО которое я установил автоматически с помощью скриптов pybombs. Хочу заметить что вы сможете повторить мои действия даже без HackRF One и без специфической антенны т.к. все будет работать и с другими SDR приемниками, например с RTL-SDR, BladeRF и т.п.
Также следует помнить что одно дело просто декодировать GSM и совсем другое расшифровывать данные GSM т.к. расшифровка и перехват чужих переговоров и СМС являются нарушением закона! А что-бы обезопасить себя от перехвата GSM-трафика просто пользуйтесь более современными протоколами которые защищены гораздо серьезнее. Надеюсь видео будет вам интересно или полезно!

It's handy when traveling overseas where you can insert a local pre-paid SIM card or if you're switching carriers or buying a used smartphone. Note that CDMA phones like those used on Verizon and Sprint work differently, and unlocking doesn't apply to them. Here in the US, AT&T; and T-Mobile are the two largest GSM carriers and many small networks use GSM too. Your carrier may supply an unlocked code free if you're a customer with an active account, and if not, you can buy unlock codes typically from $15- $35 from sites that sell codes.

Many are confused with the connection.Generally Rx goes to Tx & Tx goes to Rx..This is the rule.But the GSM board I',ve used here has a MAX232 IC & T1IN/R1OUT of 232 IC is printed as TX/RX & not that of GSM SIM300.
If this is not working for you simply swap the connections.The connections shown in video is correct when you use a NSK GSM board.
Always ensure that
Rx of Arduino (pin 0) goes to pin 11 (T1 IN) of MAX232 IC &
Tx of Arduino ( pin 1) goes to pin 12 (R1 OUT) of MAX232 IC.
No matter whether you've or not the 232 IC ,as we are using TTL logic signals
