PubMed is a free search engine accessing primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics. The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health maintains the database as part of the Entrez system of information retrieval.
From 1971 to 1997, MEDLINE online access to the MEDLARS computerized database had been primarily through institutional facilities such as university libraries. PubMed, first released in January 1996, ushered in the era of private, free, home- and office-based MEDLINE searching. The PubMed system was offered free to the public in June 1997, when MEDLINE searches via the web were demonstrated, in a ceremony, by Vice President Al Gore.

The purpose of IndMED is to index selected peer reviewed medical journals published from India. It supplements international indexing services like PubMed. It covers about 77 journals indexed from 1985 onwards.
IndMED has been produced under an ICMR funded project - "National Databases of Indian Medical Journals". Another resource produced under this project is a portal of full text articles (medIND) of select Indian medical journals indexed in IndMED or PubMed.

Video abstract of a review paper “Factors that influence patient preferences for prostate cancer management options: a systematic review” published in the journal of Patient Preference and Adherence by Showalter et al.
Purpose: We performed a systematic review to evaluate evidence regarding factors that influence patient preferences for management options for localized prostate cancer.
Methods: We followed a prespecified search protocol (PROSPERO identifier CRD42014009173) to identify studies that evaluated patient preferences for prostate cancer management options for localized prostate cancer. We queried PubMed, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Plus, and Econ-Lit databases. Two separate reviewers completed the article selection process and review, including coding of study characteristics. Study quality was scored according to the PREFS checklist, which consists of five criteria: Purpose, Respondents, Explanation, Findings, and Significance. Reviewers summarized the primary findings of each article included in the analysis.
Results: Of the 606 citations identified in the literature search, there were a total of 21 articles that met all selection criteria, reporting results for a total of 4,131 subjects. Themes identified in the studies included: the importance of patient perceptions of treatment efficacy and side effects; the influence of physician recommendations on patient decision-making; and the prioritization of concerns regarding treatment side effects among those men who prefer radiation therapy or active surveillance. The articles had an average PREFS score of 3.4 (standard deviation [SD] 1.0), which is similar to a recent study for breast cancer treatment preferences.
Conclusion: This systematic review of factors that influence patient preferences for prostate cancer management options identified a small, but high quality, group of articles that satisfied the selection criteria. The available evidence suggests that interventions aimed at informing patients regarding the comparative effectiveness of prostate cancer management alternatives should include the influence of physician recommendations and family members’ desires on patient decision-making.

A perception-based approach to content-based image representation and retrieval is proposed in this paper. We consider textured images and propose to model their textural content by a set of features having a perceptual meaning and their application to content-based image retrieval. We present a new method to estimate a set of perceptual textural features, namely coarseness, directionality, contrast, and busyness. The proposed computational measures can be based upon two representations: the original images representation and the autocorrelation function (associated with original images) representation. The set of computational measures proposed is applied to content-based image retrieval on a large image data set, the well-known Brodatz database. Experimental results and benchmarking show interesting performance of our approach. First, the correspondence of the proposed computational measures to human judgments is shown using a psychometric method based upon the Spearman rank-correlation coefficient. Second, the application of the proposed computational measures in texture retrieval shows interesting results, especially when using results fusion returned by each of the two representations. Comparison is also given with related works and show excellent performance of our approach compared to related approaches on both sides: correspondence of the proposed computational measures with human judgments as well as the retrieval effectiveness.

We present a grid-based solution for chemical named entity recognition (NER) in full text patent collections that are provided in native PDF format. Our architecture identifies and extracts IUPAC and trivial names of chemical compounds and translates them into InChI keys that can subsequently be used to generate structures for each identified entity with Marvin. All structures are finally stamped into the original PDF as 'pop-up' chemicals together with hyperlinks to corresponding sites of ChemSpider and Pubmed. A generated bookmark tree inside the PDF allows convenient access for all identified compounds. Additionally all retrieved chemicals are stored in a ChemAxon Instant JChem database together with a reference to the original patent. Instant JChem enables structural search for the processed patent collection and various filtering options. The work-flow is based on UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture) and can easily be adapted to incorporate different chemical NER tools. UNICORE is used to access grid resources for efficient parallelization of all processes.
