Indigenous peoples are ethnic groups that are defined as "indigenous" according to one of the various definitions of the term, though there is no universally accepted definition.

In the late twentieth century, the term began to be used primarily to refer to ethnic groups that have historical ties to groups that existed in a territory prior to colonization or formation of a nation state, and which normally preserve a degree of cultural and political separation from the mainstream culture and political system of the nation state within the border of which the indigenous group is located. The political sense of the term defines these groups as particularly vulnerable to exploitation and oppression by nation states. As a result, a special set of political rights in accordance with international law have been set forth by international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Labour Organization and the World Bank. The United Nations have issued a Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to protect the collective rights of indigenous peoples to their culture, identity, language, employment, health, education and natural resources. Depending on which precise definition of "indigenous people" used, and on the census, estimates of a world total population of Indigenous people range from 220 million Indigenous peoples in 1997 to 350 million in 2004.

Ramesh Srinivasan is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and Design/Media Arts at UCLA. He studies the relationship between media, specifically new technologies, and social, political and cultural realities across the world. In his first return to the TYT studio, Professor Srinivasan and The Young Turks' in-house Bolivia-phile Dave Koller cover a wide range of topics, including: - Whether the world needs more or fewer books by Malcolm Gladwell - Why a social media expert like Srinivasan shuns Twitter - How Bolivian president Evo Morales is pushing technological change to empower indigenous communities in Bolivia - Why people in the West feel a false sense of confidence in social media to foment revolution against authoritarian regimes - Why a member of a young hacker community in Bolivia greeted Srinivasan in a giant Linux penguin costume - What the people who live in and around landfills in the developing world can teach the West about repurposing old technology Find out Srinivasan's thoughts on the above topics and much more in this installment of TYT Interviews. Kevin D. Annett (aka. Kevin McNamee-Annett, and Eagle Strong Voice born 1956 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian writer and former minister of the United Church of Canada. He has authored two books about Canadian aboriginals: Love and Death in the Valley and Hidden from History: The Canadian Holocaust. In the 1980s, Annett graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor's degree in anthropology and a Master's degree in political science. In 1990, he graduated from the Vancouver School of Theology with a Master of Divinity, and was subsequently ordained by British Columbia Conference of the United Church of Canada. In 1990-1991 he served in churches in rural Manitoba, and in 1991-1992 served at the Fred Victor Mission in Toronto, an outreach street-ministry of The United Church of Canada. Beginning in 1992, he was the minister to St. Andrew's United Church in Port Alberni, British Columbia and resigned from this position in January 1995. Since 1997, Annett has been placed on the Discontinued Service List of The United Church of Canada, and can no longer function as a minister of that denomination. Annett has written two books on the subject of residential school abuse in Canada. The first, Hidden from History: The Canadian Holocaust, was published in two editions: 2001, and 2005. The second, Love and Death in the Valley, was published in 2002. In 2006, Kevin produced a documentary on this topic: Unrepentant: Kevin Annett and Canada's Genocide which won the 2006 award for 'Best Director' at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. If you remember from last week ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLvqb5SHG_Y ) then it is a followup of that video. Originally broadcasted on 26th November 2010.

Interview with Bagyeli leader Jeanne Noah on the challenges faced by indigenous peoples in Cameroon

  • Order:
  • Duration: 4:30
  • Updated: 29 Apr 2014

Jeanne Noah, a Bagyeli leader from Cameroon, relates how her community's ancestral forest has been threatened by a large scale rubber production project. On top of this, Jeanne explains, neighbouring Bantu communities claim as their own the little forest area which is not already under the company's control. As the Bagyeli's access to the forest, their home and sustenance, is increasingly compromised, she wonders "what are we going to do to live? And how is our children's future going to be like?". Sadly, this case depicts the alarming reality of most indigenous peoples in Congo Basin forests. In most cases, the rights of indigenous peoples to lands and resources are not enforced or even recognised, in contradiction with international law and standards. Displaced from their ancestral territories by agro-industrial plantations, mining and logging companies, facing constant discrimination from other communities, and abandoned by State, indigenous people like Jeanne face enormous difficulties to secure their rights and livelihoods. .....................................................................................................................................

Kenneth Deer is the current Secretary of the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake. He began his career in education in 1972, spending 16 years in this field. During this time, he co-founded the First Nations Education Council, and in 1978 he helped to establish the Kahnawake Survival School, which continues to provide education steeped in Indigenous culture and heritage. A former Member of the Board of Directors of the Quebec Community Newspaper Association, Mr. Deer founded the Kahnawake-based daily newspaper The Eastern Door in 1992, also serving as its editor until 2008. As a political activist, Mr. Deer began working with the United Nations in 1987, as a Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was being developed. He was the Chairman/Rapporteur of the United Nations Workshop on Indigenous Media in 2000, one of the first Indigenous persons to ever serve in such a position. A member of the Bear Clan, Kenneth grew up in Kahnawake. R.I.P. Russell Means ....Today We Have Lost A True Revolutionary American Hero, And Someone Who Stood For Truth And Justice Until His Death....In 1973 Russell Means and the American Indian Movement were labeled one of the the most dangerous groups in America by the FBI. In this period of increased violence, on June 26, 1975, the reservation was the site of an armed confrontation between AIM activists and the FBI in what became known as the Pine Ridge Shootout. Two FBI agents, Jack R. Coler and Ronald A. Williams, and the AIM activist Jim Stuntz were killed. ...."We were the "thought criminals" of the day. The FBI had targeted the Black Panthers and the American Indian Movement for destruction through their infamous illegal counterintelligence program COINTELPRO. We were the ones, along with all the other movements, who dared to envision a different America. Ultimately many people came to see the wisdom of our critique. Today, as I look across the landscape of the United States of America, the opposite of freedom prevails. Just as we had to battle for freedom for our lands, we had hoped farmers and ranchers would realize they were next on America's sacrificial chopping block. Over the past three decades, family farm after family farm and ranch after ranch has been auctioned off or sharecropped out to corporations. Self-sufficiency has been replaced by dependency on a malevolent federal government, and the peoples' love of the land has been replaced by personal desperation and self-interst. Freedom of thought has been replaced by a state-run educational system that produces docile, self-absorbed automations that would make Orwell blush. War is peace, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strength. Instead of learning to be critical thinkers, America's youth are conditioned into an ethic of mass consumerism and corporate careerism." Russell Means ... AMERICA IS NOT BROKE!!! AMERICA IS NOT IN DEBT!!! WE MUST END THE FEDERAL RESERVE!!! The impact of European/Vatican/Illuminati/ZIONIST colonization of the Americas on the indigenous communities has been in general quite severe, with many authorities estimating ranges of significant population decline due to the ravages of various genocide campaigns, epidemic diseases (smallpox, measles, etc.), displacement, conflict, compulsory boarding schools, massacres and exploitation. Russell Means explains Colonialism by the Imperial Power (World Order). It is not NEW World Order because it was first perfected on Indian Reservations. It is now being forced on everyone. Economic development is banned, outsourcing and our money is being sent to China India Saudi Arabia... and it is disabling our society. We have switched from a productive society to a consumer society. RussellMeansFreedom.com
