One couple’s Little Mermaid-inspired wedding included every small detail, including the fork Ariel used to come her long and wavy red hair!
Fantasy films are also great sources of inspiration for a Sci-Fi movie lover’s wedding day. Many couples have planned their entire weddings and receptions around movies such as The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. Fans of the movies will get giddy as soon as they spot hidden artifacts from the films. In The Lord of the Rings wedding, the bride paid homage to the trilogy with a Hogwarts crest sewn into her garter belt, and the bride of the Star Wars-inspired wedding made sure each guest was equipped with their very own lifesaber during the reception.
Even something as simple as a fictional character can be brought to life on a wedding day, like one bride and groom that were inspired by the Sanrio’s character Hello Kitty. The bride’s wedding day shoes were decked out in a Hello Kitty crystal motif, and even the flower girls got into the theme with their Hello Kitty-inspired dresses. When it came to the reception, there were Hello Kitty cakes and cookies galore for the wedding guest to enjoy.
While many of these geeky weddings give us a good chuckle, some of them teeter on the edge of creepy. Like the Twilight-Inspired wedding in which the couple copied Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’s movie wedding down to a T. But things got awkward when they announced to their family and friends that they had legally changed their last name to Cullen to keep the Twilight-theme of their special day going strong. Be it from the CBS flagship sitcom “The Big Bang Theory”, the ever-expanding geek-a-palooza that is annual comic book conventions or the growth of video game culture, a label that would have once meant wedgies, purple nurples and lunches spent sitting alone is now a badge of pride. In the digital age, nerds are the savvy, forward-thinking individuals who sit at the cutting edge of technological development and work in cool offices while pulling in major pay checks. Where past eras held up the “Revenge of the Nerds” guys as the typical dweeb template, this generation can look upon celebrated people like Steve Jobs, Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Mark Zuckerberg as the ideal for how it’s cool to be a nerd.
But nerdiness isn’t just for the guys anymore. At this year’s Comic-Con extravaganza in San Diego, the largest of its kind world-wide, half of the 125,000 attendees were female. So much for the stereotype of a group of comic book-loving poindexters frozen in fear while in the presence of a woman. For most nerd culture-loving males, there is nothing sexier than the idea of a girl who is fluent in Klingon, can quote Star Wars lines verbatim and can name all the different doctors in “Doctor Who”. Where finding a potential female mate at a comic book convention was once akin to spotting a needle in a haystack, many romances have blossomed in recent years at those very same conventions with both genders on considerably more equal footing.
The only thing sexier than a woman in the know about nerd culture might just be the idolized starlets of geeky science fiction and cultish TV shows and movies who also happen to know their way around nerd speak. It is one thing for Gillian Anderson to play long-time nerd fave Dana Scully on “The X-Files”, but what puts her over the top is that she also voiced a character in the cult hit Japanese anime film “Princess Mononoke” and was voted ‘Most Bizarre’ in her high school yearbook thanks to her multi-colored dyed hair and piercings.
There’s a fine line between someone falsely playing up their nerdy side in order to get in with a demographic that could help them make money and an actual, legit nerd who knows what they’re talking about. Comic con can be a dangerous terrain for folks looking to fake their way into knowing a fantasy narrative, with savvy fans ready to call their bluff on character backstories and trivial elements about a particular comic series. Not too long ago “geek,” “nerd,” and “dork,” were some of the terms used to describe intellectually sophisticated individuals who got unusually excited over computers, comics, video games, sci-fi films, and technology in general. They were considered some of the most undesirable people to be associated with and were usually spotted via their trademark big glasses and preppy clothes. You never invited them to your parties, and they were the easy targets of school bullies. Additionally, the fact that they spent the vast majority of their time in front of their computer screens and barely socialized with real people made them even weirder in the eyes of “normal” people—even though most of us have adopted this habit nowadays. Then all of a sudden, being a geek became cool. We live in an age where we have witnessed the rise of “geek culture” and people such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and the late Steve Jobs are some of the most famous, rich, and COOL people out there thanks to their innovations and contributions to the modern technology and society. The word geek is a slang term originally used to describe eccentric or non-mainstream people; in current use, the word typically connotes an expert or enthusiast or a person obsessed with a hobby or intellectual pursuit, with a general pejorative meaning of a "peculiar person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual, unfashionable, or socially awkward".

One couple’s Little Mermaid-inspired wedding included every small detail, including the fork Ariel used to come her long and wavy red hair!
Fantasy films are also great sources of inspiration for a Sci-Fi movie lover’s wedding day. Many couples have planned their entire weddings and receptions around movies such as The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. Fans of the movies will get giddy as soon as they spot hidden artifacts from the films. In The Lord of the Rings wedding, the bride paid homage to the trilogy with a Hogwarts crest sewn into her garter belt, and the bride of the Star Wars-inspired wedding made sure each guest was equipped with their very own lifesaber during the reception.
Even something as simple as a fictional character can be brought to life on a wedding day, like one bride and groom that were inspired by the Sanrio’s character Hello Kitty. The bride’s wedding day shoes were decked out in a Hello Kitty crystal motif, and even the flower girls got into the theme with their Hello Kitty-inspired dresses. When it came to the reception, there were Hello Kitty cakes and cookies galore for the wedding guest to enjoy.
While many of these geeky weddings give us a good chuckle, some of them teeter on the edge of creepy. Like the Twilight-Inspired wedding in which the couple copied Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’s movie wedding down to a T. But things got awkward when they announced to their family and friends that they had legally changed their last name to Cullen to keep the Twilight-theme of their special day going strong. Can you say awkward?

In perhaps one of the more unlikely trends within modern pop culture, nerd-dom has become cool over the past decade or so. Be it from the CBS flagship sitcom “The Big Bang Theory”, the ever-expanding geek-a-palooza that is annual comic book conventions or the growth of video game culture, a label that would have once meant wedgies, purple nurples and lunches spent sitting alone is now a badge of pride. In the digital age, nerds are the savvy, forward-thinking individuals who sit at the cutting edge of technological development and work in cool offices while pulling in major pay checks. Where past eras held up the “Revenge of the Nerds” guys as the typical dweeb template, this generation can look upon celebrated people like Steve Jobs, Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Mark Zuckerberg as the ideal for how it’s cool to be a nerd.
But nerdiness isn’t just for the guys anymore. At this year’s Comic-Con extravaganza in San Diego, the largest of its kind world-wide, half of the 125,000 attendees were female. So much for the stereotype of a group of comic book-loving poindexters frozen in fear while in the presence of a woman. For most nerd culture-loving males, there is nothing sexier than the idea of a girl who is fluent in Klingon, can quote Star Wars lines verbatim and can name all the different doctors in “Doctor Who”. Where finding a potential female mate at a comic book convention was once akin to spotting a needle in a haystack, many romances have blossomed in recent years at those very same conventions with both genders on considerably more equal footing.
The only thing sexier than a woman in the know about nerd culture might just be the idolized starlets of geeky science fiction and cultish TV shows and movies who also happen to know their way around nerd speak. It is one thing for Gillian Anderson to play long-time nerd fave Dana Scully on “The X-Files”, but what puts her over the top is that she also voiced a character in the cult hit Japanese anime film “Princess Mononoke” and was voted ‘Most Bizarre’ in her high school yearbook thanks to her multi-colored dyed hair and piercings.
There’s a fine line between someone falsely playing up their nerdy side in order to get in with a demographic that could help them make money and an actual, legit nerd who knows what they’re talking about. Comic con can be a dangerous terrain for folks looking to fake their way into knowing a fantasy narrative, with savvy fans ready to call their bluff on character backstories and trivial elements about a particular comic series. In short, even for an attractive female, looks will only get you so far with a nerd crowd – you’ve got to walk the walk and talk the talk. You never invited them to your parties, and they were the easy targets of school bullies. Additionally, the fact that they spent the vast majority of their time in front of their computer screens and barely socialized with real people made them even weirder in the eyes of “normal” people—even though most of us have adopted this habit nowadays. Then all of a sudden, being a geek became cool. We live in an age where we have witnessed the rise of “geek culture” and people such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and the late Steve Jobs are some of the most famous, rich, and COOL people out there thanks to their innovations and contributions to the modern technology and society.
